At what point does a trope become a cliche?

This is a question that just came to my mind. there are certain tropes such as the protagonist waking up in the beginning of the story that have become cliche, but I don't know where exactly is the turning point.

Can anyone help?

A trope can become a cliche when nothing interesting or particularly different is done with it compared to other works, or when its usage just feels obligatory. To use your example of Good Morning, Crono, it's used because it introduces the audience to the character and setting and regular life before the plot shows up to upend it all, but one way it can be played with is by introducing a setting vastly different from our own, like a nonhuman protagonist or futuristic/highly fantastical setting whose nature is slowly revealed over the course of the scene.

This is actually where TV Tropes can help- you can browse the examples of a trope you're looking at using to see how other works tend to use it, and thus find your own direction to take the trope.

I would say that a trope becomes a cliche when it becomes boring due to overuse. A twist that's used so much it becomes easy to see coming; a character trait that's so often present that characters with it become stale; a plot setup that's so often seen that the audience loses hope in something interesting to follow; and so on.

So, if you try to play with the trope by exaggerating, downplaying, inverting and even deconstructing it and more you're rejuvenating it. Right?

That might do so, but I don't think that it will necessarily succeed. I daresay that it depends on the "playing with", and on the execution thereof.

I would say that a trope becomes a cliche when it widely used without expanding upon the concept. Focusing more of the inclusion of the trope itself rather than delving into why that trope is being used or how it can be played with beyond the typical use.

Sort of an “eh, it works so why not” reasoning instead of anything more complex than that.
