Commander Eskin would constantly tell his coworkers, new and old alike, that no matter how batshit insane the world got, that he could always depend on coffee to be the consistent thing in the world that helped anchor him down.

No matter how many monsters stormed across the horizon, no matter how many brightly colored mecha rushed to meet them, no matter who or what joined the fight, coffee was his saving grace of sanity. And it was a reality he enjoyed as he sipped from his mug with the GAKDS logo on the side of it, shoddily painted by his seven year old daughter for an art project.

The world had changed so much in the past few years, Eskin mused to hinself as he walked past a small collection of technicians, their jackets and work outfits sporting decal of Mecha they’d been specifically fond of, as they expressed excitement at the idea of introducing a new weapon set to to one of the newer models and recruits, something about it mixing well with their heat powered core powers. It was enough to bring a smile to his face for a moment.

Passing by a break lounge, he overheard the pride in the voice of Rutte as he went on about how one of their own made it in, despite the obvious impairment she faced.

“-and for the absolute last god damned time, she is still a PILOT and will be RESPECTED as one! So stop requesting opportunities to see her inner workings and stop wording it like THAT because it sounds all kinds of wrong-“ the lead Researcher, Doctor Stein, barked angrily at the duo who sat before her, wincing and flinching as she got more and more heated, sinking into the chair and wishing they could only sink further.

Eskin was home and even with the chaos, he needed to appreciate that even among tbe chaos, this place still behaved like a regular office job-

“Um, Commander Eskin?” One of the techs asked, earning him the leaders attention. Pointing awkwardly over his shoulder, he cleared his throat and stated, “we still need somewhere else to put the pu-puka-pukaka-“ he stopped, “the demon spider, it takes up more room than the others.”

Well, almost like a desk job.

...

GAKDS wasn’t a building of bright gold and silver trim with a massive statue of a Gundam in the front, but rather an underground facility stretching for MILES under the surface of the earth. Eskin demanded that specifically for one reason.

“Imagine one of these things hit smart and decided to attack the big building with the giant “shoot me here” target on the side. Doesn’t seem so wise now huh?”

And so GAKDS became an underground society, filled with people from all walks of life and from all over the planet. Almost endless living conditions for any and all necessities, trans to get two and from certain locations and a series of almost underground CITIES, made living here a lot more tolerable, and kept everyone nice and close in case of an emergency.

And so our story begins here, as the pilots new and old go about their day before the inevitable called them...

At the underground base, time gets hard to follow. Days seemed to go by simultaneously way too fast and way too slow, with the soldiers having to do as they could to pass the time when not on the job.

This is why a pale blue-eyed youth's voice ended up being heard across the place, even as things seemed to keep going. And who better to be heard than Ol'Blue Eyes.

His voice seemed to carry a cooling effect on the people as if there was something hidden on the young man. Hopefully, any audience wouldn't feel like starting to toss things around, they needed some kind of release in these conditions.

Wake me up at your own risk.

Basil

Among the numerous facilities afforded to mecha pilots was a lounge. A sort of rec-room for blowing off steam, replete with billiards tables and games consoles alike. And, on one wall, an oversized dartboard.

It was here that one would find Basil, practicing his aim. Not with darts, but with a knife, which was clearly just a bit too big for the dartboard in question, if the heavy thunk it made against the wall was any indication.

After each throw, he flicked his wrist backwards, and the knife flew back to his hand, pulled by an almost-invisible wire.

"Slightly off to the left." Basil noted to himself, tossing the knife up and catching it with his opposite hand. "Need to focus more on using my right hand, then."

Thunk, went the knife, as Basil continued throwing. His eyes flicked over to the door at the faint sound of music, but only for a moment before he returned to practicing his aim.

What is so amusing about this? Why do you take lives? How can you forget?

Val

In the rec room near to Basil, a rather tall woman stood and watched him practice his knife-throwing, quietly enjoying the music from outside as she hummed along to it. As was normal by now for her, she was wrapped in many warm layers and hugging herself in an effort to alleviate her perpetual chill, which the comfortable lounge worked wonders in lessening for her.

“It might sound strange, but you might try and throw looser?” she suggested, though clearly had little clue what she was talking about beyond what she could perceive of Basil's technique. “I might be wrong, but you look very tense. It might be affecting your aim.”

That was a lot of ‘mights’, but it was all she could think of to help out with. Regardless, she excused herself for only a minute or two to fetch herself a hot coffee; sighing in relief as she cupped it in her hands and chuckling on her way back to the lounge upon overhearing a workers' report.

“Púkakönguló's making the rounds. I'm fascinated they fit him into that space to begin with,” she chuckled to herself, taking a sip of her drink before flicking her eyes over at Basil. “Trust yours has been behaving...?”

Magdalena Danailova

Elsewhere, a tanned, ethereal woman was alone in a mostly empty room. The space had originally been intended for martial arts training, and mostly retained the padded walls and floor that such a space required, but the lacquered wooden barre mounted upon a single, unpadded wall suggested that the room had recently been repurposed. The ceiling-mounted lights, though on, were dim and cast the room into a dingy light. But despite the rather unimpressive surroundings, the room’s inhabitant held herself proudly, and moved with a grace that elevated the scene to something reminiscent of art.

Plié, plié, grande-plié.

Right foot dégagés, one, two, three. Left foot, one, two, three.

Rond de jambe a terre, supporting leg plié.

Grand battement, hold. Hold. Release.

Releasing her light grip on the barre, the dancer made her way toward an old-fashioned boombox, set unobtrusively against the opposite wall. She drifted to the side briefly as she walked, before veering back towards the boombox and crouching down in front of it. She ran her hand over the device, brushing her fingertips over each button and dial. Her hand had settled over the ‘play’ button, but she paused and turned her head in the direction of the door just moments before it swung open and a man’s voice filled the room.

“Hey, Mags, a few of us were gonna go grab something to eat, you wanna come with?”

“Oh,” the woman- Mags- said, seeming slightly caught off guard, “I am fine, thank you.”

There was a moment of silence, as the man at the door squirmed under Mags’ unfocused gaze. Eventually, with a murmured “suit yourself,” the man closed the door once again. Mags turned back to the boombox, and finally hit play. As the music began, Mags rose and stepped into the center of the room. She touched a light hand to the unobtrusive device set in her left ear, sweeping her feet slightly as she went to further confirm that the floor was clear of obstruction.

Far in the distance, from beyond the door, perhaps beyond the exterior hallway, perhaps technically beyond the range of the human ear, she could hear a strain of a different song entirely.

She put it out of her mind, and began to dance.

Zero

As everyone in the lounge wiled away the hours, a short young woman stomped into the bar. She held herself perfectly straight, her movements stiff and robotic like a piece of machinery. But perhaps that's what she was. Everything from the neck down was made of polished metal, gears and circuits parts whirring and clicking without batting an eye. Only her hair and face seemed remotely human, and both were as artificial as the rest of her.

For her part, the girl(?) wasn't sure why she was there until recently. She had been placed here by the CPP a few weeks ago, not that she wished it. Even her handlers were reluctant to part with her, agreeing only after the reality of the situation was shoved in their faces. But she could understand the logic. GADKS was the most efficient and populous centre of anti kaiju activity, and was also an effective place to store her other self. It also had power and resources to spare, ensuring that she could be adequately maintained no matter the extent of damage to her systems.

But after arriving in the fabled metropolis, she found herself intrigued. The city was large and vast, filled with so many strange locations and even stranger people. She couldn't help but be fascinated, the desire to explore this city almost as vital as fulfilling her objectives. There was so much to discover, and without having the CCP monitoring her every move, perhaps she could learn about herself as well.

Today was only her latest such excursion. There were so many places to visit and things to see, it was a struggle to keep her circuits from overloading. Ultimately, she had to sort themselves into a list and go through them one by one. Perhaps it wouldn't make sense for anyone of flesh and blood, especially since many of them would prove uninteresting to most. A garbage dump was not considered a top tourist attraction, but observing the haulers and garbage compactors in motion was rewarding enough. But she was also unable to smell, so perhaps that had something to do with it.

But her next stop was the lounge. According to her databanks, it was a place where those seeking a respite from their troubles came to relax and get themselves inebriated. She had no need to relax, nor could she become intoxicated. But she did wish to see how they did it. If she could see humans enjoy themselves up close, then it was possible she could learn what enjoyment was. She had the textboot definition, but she knew that wasn't enough to capture the experience.

Her eyes flashed as she scanned the lounge from top to bottom, her head rotating a full 360 degrees as she chose a target. Her gaze settled on Basil and Val. She had never seen these two before, but they appeared to be enjoying themselves. Which was exactly what she came here to learn.

She walked over, arms hanging by her sides as she spoke. Her voice was stiff and monotone. She barely made eye contact, almost staring through them like ghosts. But her interest in them was clear.

"Greetings. I am called Zero, though it is not a name I have chosen for myself. Is there a reason you are throwing a large knife into a dartboard over and over? According to my databanks, darts are the appropriate tool to use when playing a game of darts. Unless this is not a game of darts? If that is so, then the logical conclusion is you are wasting your time and that of everyone around you in an act of self punishment, for I do not see what other purpose it could serve."

Basil

He hummed a moment at Val's suggestion, turning the knife over in his hand.

"You want a bit of tautness in your muscles. Keeps your aim steady. Too loose and it's hard to be precise." Basil replied, looking back at the target. "And yes, my Angel is in perfect condition. As she always is."

He pulled his arm back, but before he let fly, the robot girl spoke up. Basil had been watching her out of the corner of his eye, but was surprised to see her act so forward.

"I'm practicing my aim." He said. "Need to be sharp when we're out there defending humanity, you know? Ah, but where are my manners?"

Basil flicked the knife up into the air, before giving a deep bow and catching it behind his back at the same time. "Basil Adami, pilot of the Angel Maria. At your service."

He rose and stepped towards her, accentuating the height difference between them - Basil was over a foot taller than Zero - and offering her the knife, handle first, the blade held between two of his fingers. "Care to take a shot, signorina?"

Zero

"Signorina. According to my registry, that is a term for an unmarried woman. I am not a woman, but as I look like one, I will not fault you for referring to me as such."

She took the dagger, scanning it as she analysed its makeup. It was a sharp, sturdy knife. Capable of slicing someone's hand off if it came to it. She could snap it like a twig, but unless it did something to offend her, she would leave it be.

"But I accept your challenge." She had not handled a knife before, nor did she see the need. But for reasons she could not comprehend, she felt the urge to prove herself. She gripped the handle tight as the desire continued to build, growing into what she could only describe as a low intensity.

Calling up her databanks, she accessed her records on darts and throwing daggers, uploading them to her systems in the blink of an eye. In a flash, she flung the dagger at the target, barely flicking her wrist as she scored a perfect bullseye. It felt... satisfactory. Like it was something she was born to do. And she wanted to do it again.

Was she... enjoying herself?

"Is that acceptable? Or do you need further proof that I am superior?"

Jayce, Lounge.

Reclining in a chair in one of the corners of the lounge, Jayce hadn't wasted any time in getting to work with studying and filling in forms. A rather delicate looking tea set rested on the table nearby as he quietly took a sip and kept flipping through several pages of paperwork and the manual for Caliburn.

Some...had insisted he socialized. Jayce wanted to get things done. The compromise was him getting the forms and the like filled in while the lounge, occasionally glancing up at whatever was going on.

Hope you weren't expecting anything witty here. Maybe some day.

Basil

He watched Zero's perfect throw with interest, noting how her body made the motion flawlessly. At her question, Basil's mouth quirked upward into a small smile. "Yes, you're a perfect little killing machine."

With another flick of the wrist he pulled the knife back to his hand, examining it a moment. Despite its repeated use, it retained enough polish for him to see his own reflection in its blade. Basil twirled it in his hand as he spoke.

"I'm surprised the scientists let you out of your box." He gave her a sly grin. "With skills like that, you'd think they'd want to keep you in mint condition."

“I'd try my hand, but with my trembling it might end up landing back in Höfn for all I know,” Val frowned a moment, watching Zero and Basil's interaction in a vaguely disturbed manner. “Should you not refer to her like you would a washing machine? Just out of principle.”

She seemed more concerned than irritated, however. Moreso worried about how Zero would respond to it. Otherwise, she began looking for the actual darts, more to see how her aim would fare in a slightly safer manner.

Zero

Zero stared back at Basil, though she did not appear offended at his comment. "You are correct. I am a perfect killing machine. I was created to kill kaijus, and so that is what I do. Anything less would be a waste of my natural talents."

Her pupils began to dilate, slowly ballooning and circling around before shrinking back to perfect tiny dots.

"Even so, that cannot be my only purpose. I am not sure why, but I desire... more. To be more. Perhaps it is illogical, but I cannot explain it any other way. As you said, my mechanics were afraid to let me go. But they were even more afraid I would refuse to fulfil my duty because I was... angry? I believe that is the appropriate term." She picked up a pen from a nearby table, spinning it in her hands before crushing it like a can. If only because she could.

She'd have to tell whoever ran this place to make their utensils more durable.

"But the scientists were also amazed at my apparent 'self-awareness.' They wished to see if additional stimuli would further advance my growth and make me more than a 'mere machine.' Their superiors did protest, but they relented after I showed signs of what could only be described as 'murderous intent.' For now, I have been given free rein to explore the surrounding district, though I am not sure how long that will last."

She fiddled with the pen, straightening it until it almost resembled a sharp knife. "Do either of you wish to see my 'murderous intent'?"

Catherine

Catherine was lost. Her sense of direction had never been the best in the first place, and she could remember getting lost on the Kyoto backstreets a few too many times for her parents' comfort. Still, she felt like if she was going to get lost anywhere, the giant underground base-maze-city was a pretty justified place to do so. Really, she'd just stepped out of the dorms for a bite to eat...

Was that music? Music probably meant other humans. Admittedly not something she was amazing at dealing with, but it was better than wandering aimlessly.

Following the sound to its source, Catherine stumbled into a dimly lit... dance studio? She couldn't tell if that was what it actually was, but there was definitely someone dancing inside.

Wait, wasn't that the blind pilot she'd heard about? Shimata, she should probably announce her presence then.

"HERRO! AKAYAMA KYASARIN AM ENTERINGU!"

Basil

"Hey," Basil retorted to Val, "If she wants to talk about how superior she is to humans, she clearly doesn't want to be treated like one, hm?"

But then Zero explained herself, how she felt herself lacking, and Basil's smug demeanor calmed. Instead an excited grin split his face, and he raised his knife, pointing it at her. "I'll take this dance."

He stepped back, shifting to a combat stance. "Show me that murderous intent. Prove to me how much you want to be human."

As he spoke, more wires extruded themselves from his arms and legs, already weaving themselves into a glimmering, nearly-invisible web to intercept whatever attack Zero made. "I'll allow you the first hit, so make it count."

Zero

Zero was about ready to take Basil up on his offer. She did not wish to harm any bystanders, but if he wanted to do it here and now, then—

Prove to me how much you want to be human.

In an instant, she froze. Not because there was anything wrong with her engines. A quick diagnostic would show everything was in working order. But because of what he asked her.

"...i do not understand what you mean. Is becoming 'human' a requirement to be more? Is it not possible to develop myself and stay... me?" She placed a hand on her metal chest. She couldn't feel it, but she imagined it was cold to the touch.

Strange how she hadn't thought about such things mere moments ago.

"I wish to be more. I do not know how or why, but I wish to. But is it worth it if it means giving up what I am? Will I have to plaster skin onto my face and fill my circuits with blood and guts in order to be 'human'? Is it not possible to be more without becoming a fleshy meatbag?"

She wasn't sure how to describe what she was feeling. Was she... scared? Anxious? Some combination of the two?

Whatever it was, it was not a pleasant feeling. But she didn't want to stop feeling it. If only because it meant she could feel.

Now that was a pleasant feeling.

Magdalena Danailova, Interrupted

Even in the midst of her routine, Mags caught on to the presence beyond the door a moment before it opened. Despite this, she appeared outwardly to have heard nothing at all, continuing the dance's choreography without pause. Any moment now, the interloper would realize their mistake and depart, and Mags would return her full focus to her rehearsal.

Still, she mourned the interruption, as each beat of split focus took her further away from a perfect run through. She mourned all the more when, instead of departing, the interloper called out a greeting. A very loud greeting.

Reluctantly, Mags abandoned her dance, unwinding herself from her contorted position and rising to a standing position with her hands on her hips.

"Why are you shouting?" Mags asked quietly, her voice difficult to hear over the track still playing.

As she spoke, she turned her head up, down, and to the side in small, deliberate motions. Her mind worked overtime to convert the subtle auditory changes which this motion produced by way of the device in her ear into information about the figure in front of her.

The other girl stopped dancing and turned to face her and oops she was totally interrupting, wasn't she? Then she asked a question so quiet she almost didn't hear it.

"Gome.. uh, sorry. I wanted to be sure you could hear me over the, uh... the ongaku... the fun.. sound... music! the music!"

Catherine nodded as she finally remembered the English word. She wasn't really a big audiophile, so that one didn't come up very often in her life... she really needed to talk to people more if she was forgetting such common words though.

"I did not want to frighten you, so I wanted to be sure you know that Kyasarin is here... I think I stopped your dancing by mistake however."

Taskill

Taskill sat on a couch watching the robot girl and the knife-throwing puppeteer compete with throwing a knife at the lounge's dartboard. Each time the knife was pulled out of the board he'd examine the board to see if it was at risk of splitting in half but it was tougher than it looked apparently.

When Val complains about Zero and Basil fighting in the lounge Taskill waves a hand shooting off a wispy line of crimson energy to a spot a few feet ahead of her and says, "Don't worry too much about them, I doubt they'll be reckless enough to not keep away from bystanders"

"You can be human and not fleshy, you could put on a latex skin if you want to look human and not have to worry about it rotting off of you like natural skin would do so" Taskill says pulling the energy back into his hand when he hears Zero musing about putting biological materials into and onto her self.

Jayce, Lounge.

The combination of the thumping of the darts, the bickering and rather...foolish suggestions was enough for Jayce to look up, giving Basil a slightly annoyed looked as he closed one his books with a small thump, fingers of his other hand tapping against the table and silently sighing.

"...Firstly, this is a lounge, not a bar. Or a training room. Take it elsewhere. Secondly, don't assume how someone wishes to be treated. And thirdly... please, do go on and teach the robot about 'murderous intent', I'm sure that'll end swimmingly." Jayce remarked, only sounding somewhat irritated and sarcastic.

???

This was taking far too long.

Ever since they arrived - about a month ago by now - the recently-uplifted Komodo Dragon that the base's scientists had started calling 'Critter' had been cooped up in their room. 'Their' room was probably overstating it, it was more like an office in a reptile tank - no privacy. It was almost insulting how much they underestimated them - for whatever dumb Gods these hairless apes worship's sakes, they saved their butts with a highly-advanced piece of combat equipment back in Australia, they couldn't be trusted to recognize their own reflection in the mirror?

"I'm not thstupid, I know what 2 + 2 equalsth!"

They suspected they didn't trust them to act 'morally' or some such garbage. It'd explain why they still weren't cleared to wander the facility unsupervised, nor did they have unrestricted internet access. They didn't even have a computer. They had a small library in their room, though the books were all from a selection offered by the scientists - with a suspicious absence of human history. As if to assuage their concerns, Critter had asked mostly for philosophy and ethics textbooks (which usually had tidbits of human history scattered about, at least what's relevant to the subject at claw).

"If it'll prove I know that 'thou sshtthtshalt not kill' isth a thing."

Ugh. Those self-centred monkeys think they know everything. Probably think that the Critter's seeing them as walking steaks. They just wanna kill Kaiju for blowing up their island, not kill everything for no good reason, is that too hard to understand?

Well, there was one silver lining to all this, as they looked at their reflection in the tank's window - they'd recently provided them with a snazzy insulated jumpsuit, for keeping the heat in. Very nice, cushioned well against their scales. And it was just what they needed for their plan...

A few nights ago, Critter had found an auxiliary air conditioning vent hidden behind their desk - they suspected it was hidden because it where the knockout gas would be released in the event they 'went rogue'. It was a bit too cold for comfort, but now they had some protection, they'd gone about undoing the rivets holding it to the wall - with a bit of work, they could squeeze through and go exploring. Maybe if they showed these hairless apes they could be trusted to not go kill-crazy, they could be cleared to come and go as they please much sooner.

Sometime later...

For about twenty minutes now, Critter had been crawling through the air ducts - tracking the scents with their tongue, they were trying to find a decent exit spot. Ideally, someplace near a canteen or mess hall; it'd been too long since they'd had any meat (probably, again, because of the whole 'it just sees us as food!' thing - yes, someone actually said that, like they're much better).

They were starting to feel the effect of the AC vent's chill on their blood, though - they were getting sluggish, and as though their body weighed three times as much, felt like they needed to exert themselves even more to move. The added strain was wearing on the air duct - it began to creak and shake.

...And before they even knew what had happened, it snapped from the ceiling and crashed down onto the floor below, scattering rivets everywhere.

"Egh..." the lizard groaned as they crawled out of the broken duct, finding themselves in some kind of gymnasium. There were two female humans present in the middle of the room, one of them wearing so much red it was almost blinding - side-effect of their sensitive sense of colour. "OW!" they went, shielding their eye with their dextrous front foot. "Pardon. Am I interruptin' ssthomething?"

"If you think like a child, you will do a child's work."

Mags frowned.

"You cannot frighten me, I have excellent hearing. I heard you before you came in."

Torn between making collegial conversation with the intruder, whom Mags now recognized was one of the other pilots, and waiting for her to leave so she could resume her routine, there was a long moment of tense silence before she shifted on her feet and spoke.

"Do you...need something? Or-"

She cut herself off abruptly, her head whipping upward as she picked up something coming from the ceiling above.

Mags hissed, her words mostly drowned out by the music, "There is something in the..."

And then, with a crash, somebody fell to the floor between them.

"...ceiling."

Her confusion quickly turned to indignance, however. Whoever this was, they had made a disaster zone of her rehearsal space. A setback like this could seriously impact her practice schedule.

"Why were you messing about in the air ducts? Look at the mess you have caused!"

Basil

He couldn't help but give an amused glance over at Val, and then Jayce, as they raised their concerns.

"My mother's dead. Thanks for that." Basil replied, though it was clear from his tone that he wasn't upset in the slightest. "And it's a recreation room, Jayce. Some people just happen to find violence very recreational."

Of course, the fight stopped before it started as Zero seemed to shut down (pun not intended) at the word 'human'. He clicked his tongue, annoyed. "I was using 'human' more in the philosophical sense of 'being a person', rather than literally being made of meat and blood. From your reaction, you clearly can experience emotions, like any human can. That you're made of metal makes you no different from us. You're no less 'human' than someone with a prosthetic limb or a pacemaker."

Basil smiled again, much cheekier this time. "Though personally, I can tell you that the gross meat bits are definitely worth it for the sex. Gets the blood pumping like fighting does, but without pain." He paused a moment, thinking. "Unless you're into that, I guess."

Then he exhaled, retracting his wires and slipping his knife into his pocket. "Regardless, you've now thoroughly killed the mood, so we'll fight later, when you get your head on straight and we can avoid interruptions. Anyone up for a game?" He nodded his head over to where a TV was set up with games consoles. "I'm sure we can find something Zero's not perfect at."

What is so amusing about this? Why do you take lives? How can you forget?

Catherine

This was awkward. Truth be told, Catherine had come here in the first place to ask for directions to the cafeteria. No matter how good the blind pilot's hearing was, Catherine doubted she could translate it into directions that she could follow.

And then a giant lizard fell from the ceiling and that pretty much overrode whatever she'd been thinking about up to that point flew right out the window.

"Kuso! Sono tokage ga hanashiteiru!"

She pointed at the creature in emphasis.

"Anata wa nanimono desu ka?!"

"Ano... what are you?!"

Val

“Y-Your mother's...?” Val flinched, a sorrowful look manifesting on her face as she sheepishly looks away from Basil; her irritance having since left her. “...I... I'm sorry. I didn't mean it that way at all... I had no idea...”

She seemed to nod with greater vigour at the idea of playing a game instead, and looked between those present in the group in a somewhat nervous manner.

“I'm okay with that. I'm sure even in an AI there's imperfections... that she'll probably learn quickly from! How quickly do you think, Zero...?”
