In Spite of a Nail is one of those tropes that's probably likely to have some misuse and I thought a short-term project, ending around middle of summer could work.

The trope's defined as "Changing one small thing in the past doesn't necessarily mean the entire future will change."

Examples like Recap.Dark S 3 E 8 The Paradise:

  • In Spiteof A Nail: Even in the Origin World, Jonas will eventually be born to Hannah, signifying the (perhaps eventual) reappearance of all the characters in the Knot, even if-name-only.

That's an OK example, but probably may not give some context to how the trope's used.

But then you have examples which look like they could fit another trope, such as My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic S5 E26 "The Cutie Re-Mark – Part 2":

  • In Spiteof A Nail: Twilight's initial attempts to stop Starlight doesn't work out quite well as every time she hops back in time, Starlight's waiting and whatever she does to stop her by force just causes her to win. She has to literally drag Starlight away to show her what she's doing.

The trope appears nearly 2,000 times (1,996 examples), but there are some cases where it needs to be checked to avoid a zero-context example.

I mainly wish to address examples that make little sense, examples that don't make sense to newcomers to a franchise, or examples that could fit under another trope entirely.

Some issues with the trope:

  • Ensuring it makes sense when used on a page properly.
  • Not getting it confused with other tropes.
