I've thought long and hard about this, and it seems to me that the Opening a Can of Clones trope is not simply about how cloning can cheapen a story—it seems to be an audience reaction where viewers eventually get tired of (i.e. lose investment in) the story because there is no longer a guarantee that a given plot point will be permanent''. This reaction of course, may be subjective depending on the viewer and thus, I'd like to propose that it be rebranded (and utilized) as a YMMV trope, because the trope description (and the examples listed) are written as if it were.

I haven't ever seen this trope included on a work's YMMV page, but I think it deserves to be more prominent (e.g. I've seen some Star Wars fans argue that the introduction of force healing in The Rise of Skywalker ruined the series for the future, for precisely the reason which this trope describes). It's commonly believed that multiverse theory, Time Travel and bringing characters back from the dead often mark the end of long-running franchises (i.e., 'you have nowhere else left to go once you've added those things to a pre-existing story'), and this reaction, I believe, seems to be the core reason for that—"nothing is at stake if there is no guarantee of permanence, so why should the viewer remain invested in anything?"

It's explained in more detail here.

I also suggest that the trope be renamed so as to better reflect the overall phenomenon, rather than having the title refer specifically to cloning. If anything, I'd say that Time Travel and Death Is Cheap are often far more egregious in this regard. Even something like New Powers as the Plot Demands can produce this reaction.

Some examples I've come up with include:

"No Guarantee of Permanence" "No Permanence? No Conflict" "No Permanence? No Stakes" "No Permanence? No Consequence" "Nothing Matters Anymore" (This sentence is often used by fans whenever this reaction is felt) "The Three "I"s (Impermanence-Induced Indifference)" "Indifference From Impermanence"

First of all, "Not Thriving" is for underused tropes with barely any examples/wicks.

Second of all, we do thread titles differently here. Just inputting the trope's name is enough.

Finally, you presented no evidence to back up your claim, so this is declined.
