I found Ivan Cavini's official Facebook profile, I'll drop a private message to him regarding the picture.

Pitching this in case we can't get the Tolkien arts — is "golden light" noble enough?

[up]It's a good suggestion, the golden lights and the eagle's massive size both imply majesty, but I'm not entirely happy with the mammoth spirit overlapping with the eagle's wing.

The mammoth is pretty visible and kind of distracts from the eagle. We can probably get a better rip (Disney+ lets you take screenshots, right?).

I get my Disney caps from this website in particular.

[up]Can you please fix those links? It comes up again and again that you need to remove the ending of Wikia links for them to work.

Yeah, I guess a Crowner is a good idea. Meanwhile, I haven't heard back from Cavini yet (I guess he's on a holiday too so I doubt we'll get an answer before 2021).

making the crowner rn. do we include 18 or not? Morgenthaler suggested it but they also said that it's a T-shirt design which makes it difficult to be used.

If it's a T-shirt design, assume we can't use it.

alrighty. crowner's done, then.

some notes and questions:

  • what happens if we don't get permission for 1.3 and it wins the crowner? do we pick the second most voted option or something?
  • added notes for 31.2 and 31.3; 31.2 should be cropped to only include the bird before using, and 31.3 is a transparent image so it should be re-edited to use.

Note: 1.3 was used as a book cover; does that make any difference?

What's the rule for cropped versions of an image that needs permission? If we don't use the whole image, is that still infringement?

We've done "use half" before, like on Solitary Sorceress.

[up]In that case I'd definitely prefer a crop of Tolkien's eagles over the owls, because owls are not typically portrayed as this trope.

if you like one suggestion over the other, just vote in the crowner provided below. you can vote up suggestions you like and/or vote down ones you don't like. we'll act according to the results of the crowner.

also, owls do count for this trope, although the page mentions that examples with owls and vultures should "fit the 'noble, majestic, badass hero' stereotype"

I just got feedback from Ivan Cavini. He's perfectly happy with us using his artwork, therefore we have permission for 1.3.

Those Marahute images from the OP don't do Marahute justice. Here's a dozen or so from these scenes. (Okay... one of these is just a quality-swap of one from the OP...)

Sidenote; I can't get enough of the way the moonlight reflects off the characters in those last two images. Reminds me of the art style of Simba and Mufasa's nighttime conversations in Lion King. Anyone know if there's a particular name for it?

Great suggestions, though the image quality could be better. But why the heck was the link to 1.3 removed in the poll? I fixed it, but why was it removed in the first place? I am sure it was just an accident, but it felt especially bad after my effort to contact Cavini.
