Hopefully, it'll be able to be seen as different from Rick and Morty or Final Space.
Wake me up at your own risk.I'm willing to give this a chance, but I'm afraid that CBS is going to make a similar mistake as Disney with Star Wars where it's losing track of the tone of the greater franchise and the type of characters that we should be following. Star Trek has done plenty of great comedy stories like Trouble with Tribbles, Star Trek IV, Rascals and Tinker Tenor Doctor Spy (and some lesser comedies like most DS9 Ferengi episodes), but it was rooted in otherwise competent professionals being forced into a comically absurd situation. The first half of the teaser didn't look too bad, particularly the doctor asking the ensign to hold the heart while she does surgery, but when the Captain and First Officer chest bump after a successful "Second Contact" that set off red flags. The remainder of the teaser emphasized the main characters as comically inept, which is my biggest fear.
If that holds true, I am going to anticipate The Last Jedi-level backlash.
Why do people hate this so freaking much. It seriously isnt that bad.
Discord: Waido X 255#1372 If you cant contact me on TV Tropes do it here.I think the trailer is funny. My biggest concern is the plot. The idea of a story about the group that are not the traditional heroes has been done in science fiction before. Heck it was done in the Next Generation. But I make a point to never judge a show by it's trailer.
Fan-Preferred Couple cleanup threadI mean, it's a radical revision of one of the most iconic and longstanding franchises ever while inserting an extremely modern sense of humor. The independent quality the show and humor is not really what this is about.
Offcourse it has modern humor. It's modern.
Also I would like to point out that even the original shows had comedic episodes. This one just had different humor because it's made by a Creator with a different humor style.
Fan-Preferred Couple cleanup threadWho do you think will get to this first, Mr. Plinkett or Mr. Enter?
Mr. Enter most likely.
Check out Rogues Gallery Transplant: The GameMr. Enter's review will probably be like his review of Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (where he barely looks up information and will criticize it with baseless assumptions).
Mr. Enter likely will complain Lower Decks is too political, not realizing that social commentary has been a part of Star Trek from the start.
As someone who's always been put off by Star Trek because its fandom's pretty not great and I'm not a fan of the source material, maybe this'll be my entry point.
It's been 3000 years…I like Star Trek, but there is much of it and it runs the gambit of classic great sci-fi to cheesy or boring dreck if you have to ignore a chuck of it to get the best experience, IMO.
Elements of the fan base suck, but they do not understand the franchise, anyone who says Star Trek is becoming too political, too woke or too PC doesn't understand the franchise, Star Trek was woke on certain issues back in the 1960s.

Something that I find happens allot with franchises that I love, is that I can't stand a part of the fanbase. Not the whole fanbase, just the ones that hate something new without even giving it a chance. Just because it's new.

Fan-Preferred Couple cleanup threadBeyond me thinking a different art style would have been better, let's see how this one goes.
Wake me up at your own risk.I am getting annoyed with Trek fans who just complain about new Trek all the time all the time and just feel like nit pickers.
New Trek is not perfect, it tries too hard to be edgy sometimes, but I think it's good overall, Trek has been way worse at times in the past than it is now.
I also think not picking contiunity errors over constructive story criticism is lazy criticism.
Paul Scheer will voice a recurring character named Lt. Commander Andy Billups.
RE: Trekkies going ballistic over Lower Decks because it "dared" to be a comedy:
Actually, if we want to be honest, Star Trek (mostly the original series) had some stuff that looks pretty weird and goofy to the 21st century.
Like that one episode where the USS Enterprise had to deal with aliens who could freeze them in place and turn them into dehydrated cubes. Or that other episode where they had to deal with kids that could manipulate them while the kids themselves were being manipulated by some hologram jerk in regal clothes. Or even that one episode where ladies did something to Spock's brain. (I never finished seeing that last one.)
Point is, Lower Decks isn't going to spark the end of the world just for being a Rick and Morty styled comedy.

Oh.
I believe Spock's Brain is unambiguously considered one of the worst classic Star Trek eps ever isn't it?
One Strip! One Strip!Generally yes. There are handful of others in the running like The Omega Glory is considered rather cringy thanks to the ending and others like The Paradise Syndrome and Turnabout Intruder have aged... poorly to say the least (and the latter having been outright retconned).
No one has ever said Star Trek can't do humour, there have been some great comedic epsiodes throughout the entire franchise (The Trouble With Tribbles is a classic for a reason), its just that the style of humour present in the trailer is tonally jarring with the franchise as a whole.
I don't know, a lot of the comedy with Quark from Deep Space 9 had a more cynical edge to it and I actually think Quark was pretty funny.
To me, the humor seems less cynical and more "juvenile".
Star Trek always had a type of humor style that is more in line with British comedies, since they're so dry and snarky.
It's been 3000 years…I disagree, a lot Quark's and Odo's back and fourth was hilarious. Quark's commercial was good too.
Most humor from TNG or Voyager feel flat, but Deep Space 9 was actually funny sometimes.
There are also a ton of tropes you can make fun of in Star Trek, like the fact that half the admirals in the idealistic Federation were corrupt.
It's different.
I can kinda get why some people aren't enamoured with it, but....it's very different from anything Trek has done before. Played in the right way, it could be great. All the stuff about fans being awful still stands however, even if the series is bad.
