    Information
First of all, wiki has an article under "2019–20 coronavirus pandemic".

While the outbreak started around New Year's Day (12/31), it's picking up steam around the Asia-Pacific region especially since Mainland Chinese people tend to travel a lot.

For reference, the BNO Newsroom twitter has a special feed for any info on the coronavirus:

The WHO has page about COVID-19 and any other concerns people may have. I suggest peeps go to the Q&A page to check for official details.

@raziel: Why will the spread be more difficult to contain in Africa than in other parts of the world? I never thought of it that way, given how fast it's already spreading throughout China, with its massive transportation network and use, which isn't there in Africa.

Life is unfair...

Because even with those factors in play, China still has the economic power and infrastructure to handle this outbreak. China can overcome this problem if it takes it seriously and in time.

This is not the situation for the African countries, more specifically, the sub-saharan states in general. Between instability, poor infraestructure to react and low budget their countries are much more vulnerable to this sort of outbreaks.

[up][up] Bad news for you and your brother then as it was an Aggie (a slang term for a Texas A&M student for those not in the know) who had it.

We're very unlikely to know because of laws against medical records being made public without the patient's consent and TAMU's eventual instructions regarding who the person likely interacted with, if this turns out to be coronavirus, will likely be generic enough to protect the person's identity.

Also, it's best if you and your family ignore people trying to speculate on who the person is, because people will try to misinform.

Singapore confirms its first case at the Shangri-La resort on the Sentosa Island, same venue as the landmark Trump-Kim meeting a couple of years back.

Several residents in NSW and Queensland are being tested for the virus; no confirmed case yet.

NetEase (yech) Chinese article: Two infectees from Wuhan had flown to Manchuria before the lockdown. One went to Dalian to seek treatment after being turned away by an overcrowded local hospital, while the other started showing symptoms after landing in Fushun (having only passed briefly through the Wuhan airport, being domiciled elsewhere in the Hubei province.)

Dalian probably isn't high on the infectees' treatment list, so I'm gonna guess that many more flew to places like Beijing and Shanghai while they still could.

More Chinese cities quarantined
https://news.rthk.hk/rthk/en/component/k2/1504605-20200124.htm

Looks like it was already too late when they sealed off Wuhan, these cities account for half the population of the whole Hubei province.

That said, technically this outbreak started last year.

Well, it's probably hit Scotland and other parts of the UK. 12 confirmed being tested in total, 5 in Scotland. More likely on the way.

Mainly student-related from what I've heard.

There's a distinct theme.

So, yeah: no bets. It's hit Africa and South America already.

I think we need to rethink how we do mass movement.

This imho is the culmination of several issues with mainland China.

  • The CCP's insecurities

  • Overly lax food and health regulations

  • Mainland Chinese tourists

I'm not kidding about that last one either. Someone already posted the story about that one Chinese tourist who cheated an airport fever screening with fever medication.

Anyone thinks this would serve as the perfect excuse for you-know-who to call for restrictions on China? And not just trade at this point.

I've just called my brother, be said that the student that had the disease has isolated themselves in their home but so far it doesn't seem to be lethal.

Dutch government has said no precautions are in the place at the airports due to no flights going to the Netherlands from China (Wuhan).

Pyongyang has ordered heavy security along the DPRK-PRC border. IIRC, they're gonna close it for pedestrian/vehicle traffic.

Got a couple of videos to share:

A short CBC news headline that suggests that doing temperature checks in airports/border posts will not work in the long run. Along other problems.

Another CBC interview on whether Canada should sound the alarm and panic.

And five confirmed cases in Hong Kong. It's right next to Shenzhen, which was one of the first major cities to report infections outside Wuhan (possibly from Wuhan-based infectees seeking treatment), so the risk of further infection is looking pretty high at the moment.

The University of Queensland is looking to develop a vaccine for the virus.

Some people are fearing there's more China isn't telling us over on Twitter, and some others are also jumping to conclusions, saying that this might be what ends the human race.

...I dearly hope they're wrong. sad
