Professor Holmes - Investigations

So, they began their discussions of what one should do during this case, and...well, then they devolved into Terry Prachett and he'd be fucked if he didn't find it amusing.

He let them ramble because to him, it let him see his class in their most basic element. In their comfort zones and being, well, who they truly were without need of hiding anything.

Knowing who someone was was part of Mr. Holmes deal, after all. And everyone was bright, spirited, a little forceful and forward, and in quite a few cases, shy.

His eyes locked onto Lucy for a moment before turning back to the class and rapped his knuckles against the wood.

"Indeed, yes, all good answers, all good answers. Open mindedness, refusing to jump to conclusions, ethics, dignity, and everything else. You lot have that all well and good and covered. It's the basis of all a good investigation. Never make brash assumptions from the moment you find something. The broach you find on the victim may well be a hilarious coincidence. A soil on the bottom of the lad's feet may well have been something else entirely. Never assume, and never jump, unless you're CERTAIN that answer is the one you're looking for."

He rose to his feet, stuck his pipe into his mouth and allowed a little puff to escape from it. "So, let's see how you lot handle a special investigations for beginners." And he pressed a single blue button on his desk.

With a WHOOM, a beam of light shot out and the class found themselves in a bright blue lit room, somehow larger and more spacious than before. As Holmes stood in front of the class, he began to quickly go through the scenarios before him.

"Now before I continue, does anyone have any qualms, issues, problems with set scenarios? No gore, no languages, that sort of thing."

Is it selfish that I'm happy as we pass the setting sun?

??? — Sue

Sue blinked. And again. And again and again as she tried to process what had just happened. Okay, they were in the classroom, and now they weren't. Instead they were in some big blue room like something out of those 'Late Night Movies' she saw. At least Stevie and Ortie were there, along with everyone else. As was their teacher. But as for how they were transported here or why, she wasn't sure. All she knew was they'd been plucked from wherever they had been and trapped in some sort of prison. Sort of reminded her of the more malevolent spirits from back home.

But she'd be damned if she wasn't gonna do something about it.

She summoned her staff and took a swing at Holmes' desk, intent on smashing it to bits. After all, that was caused this. And it was the next best thing to knocking out the teacher. To be fair, that was the only thing keeping her from knocking his ass flat. "Okay, wanna tell us what the fuck's going on?! Starting with what the hell this is?!"

Hector Finley Black Venzon

Hector sent as much magical power as he could into his staff, then blocked Sue's staff with his own, parrying it out of the way, a move he'd practiced on way too many katanas. Actual katanas, not mall ninja ones. "Whoa Sue, calm down! Don't make any rash actions before knowing the full situation!"

Sue scoffed as she pulled back her staff, readying it as she prepared to defend herself just in case. "'Situation?!' This asshole just dropped us in the middle of only the Jade Emperor knows where without so much as a heads up! That's the situation! 'Sides, after what you pulled, you're the last one to talk!"

Investigations Class – Lucy Livingston

“I've never seen tech like this before...” Lucy admitted with no small amount of wonder in her voice, looking all around the new blue room for a moment before carefully returning her attention to the teacher. “At least, not in person...”

Crap. Sue's gonna take a while to adjust to all this, she thought, wincing as Sue nearly ended up obliterating the teacher's desk. I mean I knew that already but... crap, this is worse than I'd thought it'd be...

“It's just an image, Sue. It's not real,” she said carefully, trying to work out how to explain the concept of augmented reality to someone who had only figured out how clothes worked yesterday. “It's just... projecting somewhere else. It's safe. He wouldn't just do it like if it was dangerous, trust me.”

Speaking of Holmes, he didn't catch on... she frowned afterwards, again glancing over to the teacher but not allowing the darker look to cross her face this time. It was a mere look of confusion. Unless... he did, or didn't think anything of it...

Suddenly Lucy felt silly for even trying. And so her head disappeared into her hood again, but only partially. Her ink weaved out an inch or two from the fabric of her clothing in a manner akin to feelers—though again, not to the extent of the blatant ripple of her outline that had happened before.

“I... don't mind. Depending on what the others say,” she eventually shrugged, only now addressing the actual question Holmes had proposed to them. “As long as they're happy I don't mind... and I think I can handle that stuff okay...”

Blood and brutality was unfortunately something she was all too familiar with. Plus she knew that if she wanted to go down this path, it'd be necessary to get used to seeing such grisly sights. Despite her trepidation. It was dangerous, and she knew it.

...Focus on the job. The class. One of them, she eventually relented to herself, minutely nodding in internal agreement. Anything else just... take a breath and carry on.

For a moment a visage of a clawed, inky hand grasped blindly out from her shoulder, but then it was gone.

You can do this. Come on.

Steven-Simulation

He had to admit the moment the simulation suddenly sprang to life he about near had a heart attack, sure he knew advanced technology like this existed in theory, but being at the center of its application was a whole different situation. "Maybe a bit of warning next time Professor?" he tried to sound respectful as he slowed down his racing heart from the shock of the sudden transition. Sue's reaction mirrored his own, except with sudden anger taking the place of a stunning shock. Then again that did fit with the kind of person she was. Still it looked like things were mostly under control.

"It scared the heck out of me too," Steven walked over to Sue and put a hand on her shoulder. "I'm actually still kind of freaked out, this room is probably worth the entire place I used to live five times over. Mind if I stick next to you and calm down a bit?" he sounded rather earnest, but at the same time thought giving Sue something to distract her would be better then just saying to calm down and ignore the fact an entire room had shifted.

Be better, because what is the harm in trying?

Hologram? — Sue

Lucy's remarks didn't do much to sooth the savage Sue, but a gentle touch from her boyfriend was enough to make her simmer her down a bit. "But, but..."

Oh what the hell. She groaned as her staff vanished, groaning as she finally managed to calm down. "Oh okay." She supposed she had been rather quick to jump to conclusions. She placed her own hand over Steven's, almost forgetting the unexpected situation they'd been thrown into. Almost. "Maybe I was kinda-sorta overreacting. But can you blame me? I mean, how was I supposed to know this was a holo-whatzit? And he at least could've explained himself before pulling that sorta shit."

Classroom -> the Matrix

"Yes. Alot." If I needed a reminder to stick to what I'm good at. I wonder if I can take my books and work from the lab again this semester. And Holmes... 'all good answers'. Well, he repeated some of them. Did that mean focus on those?

"Scenarios? Wait maybe you should check people for epilepsy," Ortrun did finish that sentence though after the room had blinked and flashed away. Sigh. Well, no one's writhing on the ground and...
Ortrun finally picked her jaw up after Steven calmed Sue. Even with a dropped jaw though, Ortrun frantically waved her hands at Holmes in the only placating gesture she knew. "To be fair, Mr. Holmes, this sudden...change could be mistaken for being abducted. Respectfully. Sir. Not that you didn't know what you were doing. And yeah, anything's fine" She didn't really feel like she could make a request after that.

"Its... um like the holodeck? Star Trek." Ortrun looked between Steven and Sue, took a breath and started. "Several devices use force fields, motion simulation, and... tricks of light to simulate things." She twirled her hands in a random gesture as if that helped explain anything. "Make video images that can touch you. Its like being in a movie. And you can pick the movie."

Ryan Brady

Surprisingly, Ryan was...not the first one to go jumping and running into a fight. It seemed though after what happened with him that Sue really didn't take a shine to skeeve-wizard, and so they were basically at each others throats with this inciting it. He was himself not particularly fond of just being dumped into a weird blue space but—-

Getting up and moving around, Ryan was at the ready in case blows were being thrown. At any rate, he'd probably be on the opposite side of Dr. Light-shooting-stick over there, he thought with a look at Hector.

He breathed and checked to see if everyone was good now. Ryan knew he shouldn't be the one saying this, but this was not a time to be smashing each other up and gettin' into fights.

Thankfully, Steven calmed Sue, and now whatever was going on here was probably due to begin. Ryan cracked his knuckles, he didn't know if this would involve some throwdowns, but he'd be good for that.

Fangs and darkness

While everything was going on, the door suddenly opened, with a tall figure walking in. Dressed in black, with a choker in his neck and a serious expression on his blue eyes, he looked at everyone around, studying. The ears on the top of his head twitched for a moment, but he didn't change his expression. A slow, slight sound of chains rattling followed his movements, as he looked around.

Being late wasn't his intention, but getting everything ready took a bit too long. Even so, he reckons if it can be safe for him to be around people, it's worth it.

Hector Finley Black Venzon

Hector could not hide his look of surprise even if he tried. "I'm in the same class as a freaking loup-garou? You don't say! Anyways, you didn't miss much. Just some discussion on investigation techniques. I'll let you copy my notes. What's your name? I'm Hector Finley Black Venzon. I'm a wizard." He really hoped he didn't mess up with this one like he messed up with Nick.

This could go either of two ways. Either we become best buds or I'm forced to kill him at some point. I'm seriously hoping it's the former.

Professor Holmes

"Right, right, well thankfully I have no scenarios wherein cannibalism isn't an option. So, with that in mind, we'll go ahead and-"

WHACK! The Desk was nearly shattered and now another fight was escalating. He barely took his time to gaze over at the growing insanity that was this class, and barely took the opportunity to acknowledge the new student that showed up. He looked at his desk where it was mere moments away from being shattered and all of his god damn hard work would have been wasted.

Admittedly, maybe that was a bit...ahem...of a jump on his part. He probably should not have brought this group, especially a problematic wizard and a rage happy monkey girl into a hologram simulation.

That was on him.

He took a deep, deep breath and took a moment to figure out exactly what he could do from here, when he felt the phone in his pocket buzz. He looked at it for a moment before pulling out his phone and narrowed his eyes at the number on the caller I.D.

"I'll be back, class.' He shouted loud enough to get their attention and gestured. "You'll find your books in your desks. Turn to page 83, chapter entitled "The Art of Investigation, The Where, the What's and the Whys. I need to take this, read as far ahead as you can." He opened his phone and held it to his head. "Holmes." he greeted and stepped off to the side.

Blank Blue Investigations Void

"Okay, but we're still in the... there's bright blue lights from the simulation. I could get used to it of course. If its supposed to stay like this, sorry." Ortrun trailed off, undoing strands of hair to give her eyes some cover from the bright blue light. That was kind of hard to miss and she was telling a teacher the obvious. She could just shield her eyes with her coat when she sat down.

Or, she had already read ahead. She gave the academic honesty rules another look, but who would call this cheating? Well, to call it something, one first has to do. Is this even the right book to start with? How am I to know? I could probably run and get a book on education from the library. But, I'd have to get a pass. And he's on the phone.

"Sue," Ortrun made herself say it after not too long. "Could I help you with the first chapter?"

Investigations Class – Lucy Livingston

And another delay, Lucy sighed quietly, shifting her weight from foot to foot. Wonder how much of this is on me... could be doing a lot better here...

a t t͞a̡ì͘͟n ̵̧͠c̀͟͏o͏̡n̷̨t͜͡r̵͝o̸͘l͞

See, Ortrun's even asking to help... she noted to herself, glancing over as the scientist made her offer to Sue before tearing her gaze back to her desk as she began to search for the book in question. C'mon, Luce. Get it together. You're falling behind. You won't do anything at this rate.

The observation regarding the lights of the simulation was one she picked up on though, and for some ease of comfort she took to removing some of her ink from her person and letting it snag itself over the sources of the projections so as to lower the brightness somewhat. If not only as a temporary solution. If they were shut off her medium would return to her immediately.

Now, page 83... she focused, seating herself back at her desk and beginning to flick through the pages. A hardened expression of concentration manifested gradually on her face, the apparent severity so strong to the point where she was almost unrecognizable. Page 83, and... okay, here we are...

She fell silent then, expression continuously stony as even her ink fell dormant in her concentration. Without realising it she had leant back and put her feet up on her desk. In her focus she had lost track of where she was.

Wonder if David should work on some portable equipment... she wondered to herself, turning a page. Can't always run back to him if I need to figure out something... it'd be easier if I had something on the field...

Hector opened the book to page 83 and started reading, highlighting and taking notes, occasionally stopping to let Kyle copy his notes. His concentration wasn't as intense as Lucy's. It was more the quiet concentration of a professional wizard. He did consider himself one, after all. Being a wizard was a core part of who he is, and he would never give it up. But yet...

I don't feel good about the whole situation. What could be going on?

First chapter? Books? 'Read ahead?!' It was enough to almost make her think she was being singled out. But hey. It was cool. She had this.

Okay, she didn't have this. If Sherlock Asshat had dumped this on her ten minutes ago, she'd be screwed.

Thank the Jade Emporer for besties.

"Uh, yeah. Thanks Ortie. I still don't know what he wants us to do. I mean, it can't be that important, can it? Cause if it is, then something's seriously fucked up."
