Well, let's see. From my brief forum game research, I've discovered there were like, two roll to dodges in here before. The first one seems to have been running for a long, long time. The second one kept going for a month, and then up and vanished along with its GM.

Since I do kinda crave for one, I figured I should try GMing one as well.

In case you are not familiar with Roll-to-Dodges, these are basically RPG games with ultra-lite ruleset, making for a more casual kind of RP than the serious game/narrative of "proper" tabletop RPGs.

The ruleset revolves around a six-sided die (d6) roll, which is performed for every action I deem to neither succeed automatically or fail automatically.

Depending on the roll, such action has on of the following outcomes:

  • natural 1 - Critical failure - The action goes horribly wrong, usually resulting in certain or potential harm to your character.
  • 2 or less - Failure - The action does not succeed.
  • 3 - Partial success - The action does not succeed fully - it is either done partially, to a lesser degree than desired, or with a minor drawback.
  • 4 - Success - The action is performed as intended.
  • 5 or more - Epic success - The action goes better than expected, with some extra benefits.
  • natural 6 - Overshoot - The action goes horribly right, and has negative effects towards you, alongside the positive.

If/When you decide to sign up, I want you to post some kind of theme, profession, concept, or something like that. Your character will be given some equipment and/or abilities that fit this theme/profession/concept, to add some variety to characters right from the start.

Wonderful! Could I please get the initial theme/profession/concept for your character?

If you need some examples, here are some possibilities:

  • Fire magic
  • Cowboy
  • Robot
(You are not limited to those three, of course, be as creative as you wish. Just keep it concise and not too specific.

Dylan (johannes4123), you start with the following abilities:

  • Smuggling proficiency - Well, smuggling is your way of living. If you weren't good at it, you'd be in jail. You get +1 to any roll involving actions essential to smuggling. That includes, but is not limited to, concealing items, maintaining composure, fast talk and forgery.
  • Hiking proficiency - You really, really like hiking and have gotten somewhat good at it. You get +1 to any roll involving walking a long distance, and any distance you've fully succeeded at travelling (as in, got 4 or more) can be travelled as a free action. (with an automatic success)
  • Skilled shooter - As an avid hunter, you have experience with firearms and get +1 to any roll involving shooting a gun at anything that is not a human or any other creature you recognize as intelligent.
And the following equipment:
  • 2007 Mercedes Vito, smuggler-friendly - It's a van. Has this dark, reddish color. Not very fast, nor very agile, however, it does have hidden compartments making your job easier. Concealing small items (GM's opinion) inside this vehicle automatically succeeds.
  • Fake driver's licence - a driver's licence with a fake identity. Useful if you don't want to leave a trace to your actual identity.
  • Hunting rifle - A bolt-action rifle. Does not spit out that many bullets, but is accurate anough to be hunting with. Also, you have a permit for it.

Hefin (TenOfSwords13), you start with the following abilities:

  • Werewolf transformation - Every night, you can choose to transform into a werewolf (on a full moon, you have no choice, and automatically transform) - it's a free action. When you are a werewolf, your damage and resillience is greatly boosted, you get along with wolves and other canines (+2 to interacting with those) and your senses are enhanced (+1 to rolls that would benefit from those, such as tracking or observation). However, your instincts and appearance make it very difficult to interact with people (-2 to such rolls), and your higher cognitive functions are slightly impaired (-1 to actions involving complex thoughts/planning)
  • Bird afficionado - You're good at interacting with birds (+1 to bird interaction rolls)
  • Painting proficiency - Painting in your free time has really paid off. Who knows, maybe you can make a living out of it, or more likely, earn something on the side. (+1 to painting rolls)
And the following equipment:
  • Painting equipment - a portable easel, canvas, a selection of paintbrushes, a palette and a selection of paints. Perfect for painting on the go.

Alivia (AutisticAlivia), you start with the following abilities:

  • Nice-sounding voice - you get +1 to all social interaction rolls, as long as people can hear your voice clearly. You also get +1 to singing.
  • Soothing voice (Cooldown: 5 turns) - you can attempt to buff yourself or allies with your songs. Possible buffs include: healing, boosting the likelihood of the next action succeeding, or making yourself / the ally resistant to damage.
  • Internet Researcher - After spending so much time in the internet, you are well-versed in using it to find information and filtering out irrelevant/false data. If you roll a critical failure or a failure while doing so, I'll reroll the die and use the better result. I will also be more lenient when determining what is possible for you to find on the internet.
And the following equipment:
  • iPod, with headphones. - a music player. Allows you to listen to music in peace.
  • Small laptop - a small laptop, light, and efficient.

Austin (unfortunatezoroa), you start with the following abilities:

  • Lock-picking proficiency - As a proper rogue, you need to know how to open locks. Normally, lock-picking is an impossible action (or one that has hefty penalties to the roll). Not for you. You can attempt to pick them open.
  • Stealthy approach - Crucial for both a rogue and a prankster, you're very good at sneaking up on people, and get bot a +1 and a critical failure reroll when you attempt to be sneaky.
And the following equipment:
  • Set of lockpicks - basic equipment for opening locks.
  • Small jar of pepper - perfect for making people sneeze.
  • Switchblade - you prefer not to use it, but if you happen to be discovered, it's a nice tool to defend yourself with. Also useful for cutting things.
  • Screwdriver - a flat-head screwdriver.

Alrighty. That seems like enough players to start. Of course, people can still sign up. Remember to put actions after a ">". Of course, if you feel like talking to each other, I won't mind.

You wake up in a room. It's somewhat bare, with three four single beds, a single closet, a colorful rug, and a small tv attached to a wall, currently off. The light shines through a window. Pretty sure it's morning. You guys are in the same room, each in the separate bed.

Any equipment of yours that's portable enough to carry into a room is on the floor, next to your bed. Any equipment that isn't (looking at your van, Dylan) is nowhere to be seen, at least from your bed. (You do have the keys with you.)

What do you do about this?

EDIT.: I did not see your post, Zoroa, wait a moment, and I'll edit you in.

EDIT 2.: And you're in. You're in the same room as the other three.

Austin (unfortunatezoroa) : >Ask the others what happened last night
You've rolled a: 6
"Hey, what happened last night?", you ask the others. It was a clear question, an understandable one, and loud enough everyone should hear. Of course, all the other characters are player characters and not NPCs, so whether they answer or not is not up to me, but-
"We kidnapped you, that's what happened!" You heard a voice, coming from the closet.
...
"Ah, shit, I was supposed to be quiet! Welp, you know too much, you know?"
Suddenly, a person in a white suit leaps out of the closet, and goes straight at you!

ROLL TO DODGE THE MAN IN WHITE!
You've rolled a: 2
Still in the bed, and still not fully awake, you kinda freeze in shock. That earned you a punch to the face and lost you 5 HP.

~~~~
Hefin (TenOfSwords13) : >Try to remember what happened prior to waking up.
You've rolled a: 4
Well, you see the kidnapper leaping at another guy in this room. That considerably jogs your memory. You were out drinking, see? And a lady in a white attire, just like the one worn by this kidnapper dude, bought you a drink. And then you kinda don't remember what happened next. You do know your alcohol tolerance however, and know you are not this lightweight. Yeah. The drink was probably roofied or something. Welp.
~~~~

Alivia (AutisticAlivia) : >Look around the place.
You've rolled a: 4
You get up and notice the room has not been cleaned in a rather long time. It's not filthy or anything, but it is rather dusty in here. You look out of the window, and see you're on the first floor of the building you're in. (I'm using the European floor numbering convention here, it's second floor to you Americans out there.) You see a parking lot, about half-full.

~~~~
Billy, you can still join in, however, I'm not exactly keen on reading 90 pages of forum RPs. Please sign up like everyone else so far, thank you :D.
~~~~

Brian (Afterwards), you start with the following abilities:

  • Sword-fighting skills - you know how to swing a sword, and get +1 to any attempts to attack with one.
  • Gift of sorcery - You've recently discovered the secret of magic, and while you aren't well versed in the art, you have some useful effects:
    • Light - (free action) Makes your hand glow, allowing you to not carry around a flashlight.
    • Knockback - Allows you to shove an enemy a great distance forward. Causes more or less damage, depending on what you push them into.
    • Counterspell (passive) - Lets you block other spells from harming you. You get +1 to dodging magic attacks.
And the following equipment:
  • Sword - a shortsword, not of extraordinary build quality, but good enough to be more than decoration.
  • Nintendo Switch - you don't leave the house without it. Has a copy of The Legend of Zelda: BotW.

You wake up in a hallway. You see numbered doors, right now you're next to door 106. Of other notable things are paintings hung up on the wall opposite to the doors. They mostly depict winter landscapes. Oh, and you hear some shouting and commotion from the room 106.

Hefin (TenOfSwords13) : >Grab the Man in White.
You've rolled a: 1

That did not go well. The man in white saw you approaching with the corner of his eye, and sidestepped your grab. Moreover, you've lost your footing, and are heading straight towards the nearest wall.

ROLL TO DODGE THE WALL
You've rolled a: 4

Fortunately for you, you do manage to regain your footing, and put your hands between the wall and your face just in time. Your next action will not be penalized in anyway, nor have you received any damage.

Dylan (johannes4123) : >Grab the rifle (and also try to intimidate the Man in White).
You've rolled a: 2+1=3

"No, I'm not telling you a thing." Somehow, he remains calm. "It would ruin the plan."
You did not get much information out of the man, but you did achieve something. He does seem a little fazed by a barrel of a gun staring at him, and is paying all attention to you. Now, everyone else in the room gets +1 to rolls made to attack the guy, or do anything else under his nose. (at least, until something else gets his attention.)

Alivia (AutisticAlivia) : >Take a look at the parking lot .
You've rolled a: 2

The dice don't really like you guys now, do they? Well. It's a parking lot. There are cars on it. You're not that into cars or into parking lot engineering, so you can't really tell more.

That's a good question. I'm generally not used to thinking of skills this broadly, and I do kinda imagine a smuggler as being more subtly manipulative than being outright threatening. So, no, not in general case, no. On the other hand, this is supposed to be more casual, and you are aiming a gun at him, so I think a little bonus is warranted in this specific case. Let's rectify this and hope this doesn't break the balance or something.

EDIT.: Okay, situation is rectified. Feel free to change your action to adapt to the new situation.
