I suppose they couldn't figure out a way to just block harmful uses of magic, so they decided that cancelling it all was a necessary evil? I still have to watch Granbelm, anyway.

As for Dr. STONE, it has a slow start, but things start getting interesting when the rest of the cast appears - and they're waaaaaay more entertaining, believe me.

So JoshiMuda is just kind of off. It's basically a goofy sketch comedy, but it also has moments (especially early on) where it seems to be going for more of a low-key SoL style. The timing is generally weird and there's the occasional failed attempt at artistic direction, both of which give it a faintly surreal tone. On the plus side, it has unusually high production values for this kind of show, and the OP is genuinely great

Enn Enn no Shouboutai: Well, the presentation is phenomenal. Superb animation and some of the best direction you'll see anywhere. ...I'm not sure the story it's telling is worth this effort, though. While the episode was mostly backstory and building the setting, what little character interaction there was was honestly pretty bad

Granbelm: Kind of a less extreme version of the same issues. Not quite the visual tour de force, but the writing is generic instead of bad. So it's quite good and you should watch it

Anyways... Just watch the two animes on my list:

  • Maou Sama Retry: So... A slightly less darker Overlord with a mafia as a demon lord? Alright. And yeah, there's also Yellow Rem named Aku. Though the story itself does have a bit of an elements from Death March. Though not the best, I'm definitely keeping forward for this
  • If It's For My Daughter, I Defeat the Demon King: This is probably going to be the most controversial anime because of it's elements that happened in Volume 6 but that depends if they will get there since the anime has 12 episodes as far as I recall. So far, I kind of enjoyed it with the chemistry between Dale and the Demon kid that he found, Lamia. Keep in mind that this anime? Is not an Isekai but yeah... Given that the anime fandom are getting flooded by Isekai... I think its understandable why people mistake the anime for it.

Next stop: Kanata no Astra, Fire Force, Granbelm and Dr. Stone. I made a thread for Fire Force and Granblem.. Also, anyone mind if I made the thread for Astra, Loli Demon anime and Maou Sama Retry at a later time?

El-Melloi: Dear god, I think we get three layers deep in flashbacks at one point. Anyway, it's kind of a mixed bag. High production values, but it doesn't really need them. Oddly silly for a story that seems to be mostly taking itself seriously. On the plus side, Lady Reines is great

"Symphogear XV Episode 1: I really, really, missed this franchise and show...the moment the transformation sequence started, I got hooked up on it again. Say what one want, those just keep getting better and better every season. (Also, did not expect to see a Donald Trump cameo during the episode, that caught me off-guard in more ways than one...)

"Lord Melloi Case Files" Episode 1: It's Fate, enough said, will see were it goes but do like seeing something else but the grail wars for once in this verse.

Edit:

"The Ones Within" Episode 1: I'm...a bit too shambled out and confounded to deliver a straight judgement on this one. The plot seems to be pretty low-key from the first episode as far and I felt no real stakes at play during it, felt more lighthearted than it should be with this kind of scenario...

Just leaving my head full of "????" all the way through.

Might need the 3E-Rule for this one to clear them out...

Vinland Saga - Damn, this is pretty. Vinland Saga is the story of a Rogue born in a land where everybody only picks Barbarian as their starting class. More seriously, though, the show seems good. It's very good looking, has a good sense of drama and pacing, and tells a compelling story. It's a good recommendation for just about everyone.

Me, I won't follow it, mostly because the history buff in me has several issues with how this story and viking culture is presented, even if some of it is done in order to avoid this becoming too dark.

I think the women are treated too respectfully for the time period, and that no viking at that point in time, let alone a man as important as Thors, would refuse to buy a slave on principle alone, much less buy a dying slave for that many ewes, especially if his wife is sickly like they suggested. That decision alone would have killed his family. And other minor issues.

Again, I understand the reasons this is being done in the show, but I didn't like the show enough to ignore those issues.

Yes, I'm fun at parties.

I did say this was a personal thing. I even gave the show a good recommendation, because it is that good. I just won't be following it myself. Don't see how that's a problem.

Well, the whole point of Thors is that he's a Wide-Eyed Idealist who renounced a lot of Viking ways. Trust me, the other Vikings in the story do not treat women like he does.

…Wait, I just noticed the first 3 episodes were out at once. Huh. Makes you wonder what was the point of that premiere yesterday. =.="

Re:Stage: Huh, that actually wasn't bad. Like, low end of good to high end of decent, but still probably the best Love Live knock-off I've seen. Biggest issue is that it feels kinda rushed at times. Biggest strength is the (2D!) dance sequences, which are both well animated and well choreographed

Genome: Another one for the "I'm not sure about the story, but the presentation is great" pile. Or at least the visual presentation. Doesn't really hit as hard as it should. So, mixed feelings on this one. Will give another episode to see if it gets better

Vinland Saga: Well, I can definitely say it has some good animation. Beyond that... I don't know why, but I've always had difficulty getting into historical fiction, and this isn't proving an exception

I think the women are treated too respectfully for the time period

Weren't vikings known to treat women well? I've actually heard the exact opposite complaint about this series

[up] Well the Vinland author did research on the Viking life by actually going to the places like Scandinavia but amusingly the historical details that women were actually treated better than previously thought back then was discovered long after the author did the research & published the manga.

The scandinavian people did generally treat women better than most of their contemporaries, but only compared to their overall treatment for that period of time. The daughter's behaviour, though, especially in front of the other village's chief, wouldn't end well for her at all, were it by the other village chief or by her father. She's acting like a modern teenage girl there, and that would insult several people in several ways.

Cop Craft - I think this is as close to noir as modern anime can get, in that it's got all of the noir elements: grizzled detective, dead partner, noir atmosphere, jazzy music... but it also has lolis and monster girls, magic and all the rest. This is a pretty good little thing, though. It's nothing new, being mostly clichés from the noir genre, but they're well executed, and everything around them helps seal the deal. The animation is pretty good, even the cg parts, the soundtrack and sound effects, even the writing, which isn't anything new but is very charmingly written. This might be an interesting one to keep an eye out if you're into noir stuff.

Will you please like hentai if it's cute? - Fucking hell... y'know, there's only so much of a surprise you can expect from a show titled like that, but wow, this went beyond all of it and turned into an entirely new kind of trash. It introduces, no joke, all of the harem candidates in under two minutes, at a breakneck pace that leaves you barely capable of understanding what's being said, then proceeds to provide the line "It's natural for a brother to pamper his little sister" right after having an accusation of incest, and that's before it even introduces the main plot. Things only go downhill from there. Also, the artistic merits are... well, there's one scene that seems visually lifted straight from a visual novel, there's one scene where the protagonist's toes bend like fingers on a hand, and then there's the world's most demonic dog that's supposed to be cute and endearing. This is a mess. I'd almost recommend it as a "so bad it's good" kind of deal.

Arifureta - It's Sword Art Online fanfiction, except it... thinks it's creepier. It isn't. It's just kinda bad. It's far too dark to see properly, the animation is lackluster, it throws a bunch of jargon at you from the word go with zero context, and the protagonist looks and is annoying. And it's comprehension of "things are dark and gritty" is having the protagonist react horrified to a basic food chain. Give it a wide berth.

There was also one that came out today about Nobunaga, because of course there was. The man has probably spent more time appearing in japanese media than he spent actually alive at this point.

[up][up]The first moment that qualifies for a "horrified protagonist face" is as follows: the protagonist finds what seems like a normal bunny. Nondescript monsters come by, which are then killed and eaten by the bunny, which reveals itself as a predator. It then hunts him, but is stopped by a bigger creature. That moment (the bigger creature eating the bunny) is what elicits said horror, alongside the caption "that bunny became the prey!".

It's kinda silly.

It does start getting a bit darker after that, with the protagonist then having his arm hacked off and eaten by the bigger monster, but that's the first place the show draws the line for. It's also about two or three minutes into the show, so it doesn't take long to go for that face either.

No, no, see, the bunny ain't cute. It's pretty clearly a demon bunny of some sort. It's got weird eyes and completely destroyed three wolf-like creatures about a second before it turned against the protagonist. It's not a cute bunny at all.

And the face the dude makes is that face you see in dark magical girl shows all the time that indicates the magical girl in question is in full despair mode. And he does it about three minutes in to a depiction of the food chain.

Maybe he’s just dismayed to realize that it was not, in fact, the apex predator?

I mean, it’s one thing to observe a good chain from the distance, but when you’re in the thick of it, with a whole menagerie of monsters gunning for you, each more deadly than the last...well, that strikes me as rather demoralizing.
