The main guy has ears! I wonder whether he will instantly understand Japanese.
I swear to Nolan!Batman, I was CERTAIN the sister was going to get killed, and then the baddie or heroes would get mad and/or sad or something like that. Glad to be wrong. This show continues to be riveting.
Interesting that Hyakki took great care in only disarming Dororo without hurting them, but had no qualms taking down the brother. I guess that means said brother was already Gollumed beyond salvation.
Having a woman crying be the first thing you hear in your life must not be a pleasant experience.
Yes, crying women can be annoying. Or did you mean something else?

I meant that as "no one wants to hear someone being sad", but that works too I guess.
The Nihiru-wielding guy has a special place in my heart, because he was basically my introduction to Dororo. I said before that I first heard of Dororo when my college housemate was playing the video game; when I first saw him play it, the Nihiru-wielding guy was the first antagonist I ever saw.
Yeah, I agree with Lyendith. There's something tragically poetic about the first things Hyakkimaru ever hearing being the sound of rain and someone crying over a dead man.
Definitely loving this series so far. The latest episode gave me a Katanagatari vibe.
It's been fun.Nihiru guy is a lot more sympathetic in the Blood Will Tell game. This version is just a sadistic asshole.
Disgusted, but not surprisedI was talking about the episode with a friend, and I was expecting to see the guy's aura turn red at some point through Hyakkimaru's vision, but I guess it's a question of spiritual nature instead of how someone acts, really.
Also, it's kind of touching seeing how differently Hyakkimaru fought between disarming Dororo and fighting the original wielder.
It's been fun.I think it's important that the aura didn't change, as this means he's the first human Hyakkimaru has killed, albeit one still possessed by a demon sword. This also helps serve a transition to the regular human enemies that show up (in contrast to the manga, where that happens from the start).
Episode 5 is rather peaceful… actually I think it doesn't have any music at all outside of Mio's song? And then it all goes to shit. Since the show doesn't shy away from the horrors of war, I shouldn't be surprised it also shows that kind of horror, but it still caught me off-guard.
On the good news front, Hyakkimaru now has a voice! The bad news is that, err… yeah.
And the nitpick of the week… How can Hyakki understand words if he's never heard anyone speak? >.>
Lip reading using his aura sight.
Watch SymphogearYup I knew she’s a prostitute. The signs were all fairly clear, she’s a beautiful woman, she works at night & she “services” the soldiers. Unpleasant but sadly sensible in the type of environment she’s in.
Though fucking Hell Hyakkimaru lost his leg. Poor guy just got the Goddamn thing back.
Well there is the idea that he learned how to spell his name by watching the aura movements of Jakui spelling it.

"I am Alpharius. This is a lie."It also seems that, as he gets his bodyparts back his soul is getting darker, if what the priest thinks when he looks at Hyakkimaru as the two were going to face the monster. But for the negative consequences to hit so early...
Could it be possible that the body parts being possessed by demons have also tainted them?
That was dark. Darker than the manga version, even.
Watch SymphogearNo surprise it got dark. One of the main themes in the original Dororo manga was that War Is Hell on multiple levels. Tezuka did not want to romanticize the Warring States Era.
Disgusted, but not surprisedTrue, but Mio wasn't a Prostitute in the original. It was still in a Shonen Magazine, after all, even if the Showa era allowed some things for Mangaka to get away with that they can't in Shonen Magazines now (Doesn't stop Champion RED today, though).

Watch SymphogearFrom what I get, there was no such thing as "seinen magazines" back in the days, which explains why stuff like Ashita no Joe, Barefoot Gen or this ran in "shonen" magazines…

I think this is the first adaptation of Dororo I've ever seen where Hyakkimaru loses one of his actual limbs. Unless it happened in some other adaptations I'm not aware of.
It was definitely a big "Whoa..." moment for me.

Nope, Its the first time it happened, too.
Watch SymphogearYou mean Hyakkimaru, not Dororo. The show isn't quite that brutal yet.
Wait - was Mio's occupation supposed to be a twist? I thought it was meant to be obvious to the viewer, and really only a "twist" for Dororo. Also I just realized that Dororo probably heard her talking about working at night/taking back what the war stole from them, and assumed she was a thief like him.
In the manga he was Driven to Suicide at least once.
For the most part though he doesn't outwardly angst about his condition or even reveal it to most people. He just dedicates himself to fixing his condition by killing the shit out of a bunch of demons. Though he does become increasingly jaded as the manga goes on. Living through the horrors of the Sengoku period in addition to facing the Fiends will do that to a guy.
