It's kinda weird that I don't want to watch the anime because the middle portion is so good that it makes my dissatisfaction with the ending that much more pronounced.

Well, rumors are rife of an anime-original ending to tie into the visual novel that'll come out around the time of the finale, heartened by the fact that the anime skipped the first Fuu/Yots date, thereby losing the original "Yotsuba on the swing" scene.
people are still waiting on the Nino redemption arc and her actions in episode 3 didn't help
while Fuutarou pretending to be Kintarou caused me second-hand embarrassment as i was waiting for him to be found out, only for the show to pull a 180 on me and reveal that Nino had found out (and then drugged him. again.)
there is also the question of who Rena is. personally, my guess would be either Ichika or Itsuki

and with episode 4, the Seven Goodbyes arc has ended and what a rollercoaster of a ride this arc was
i had seen pictures of short-haired Nino on the web before, but i didn't know when she or why she cut it, so seeing the context was really surprising

season 2 episode 5:
this is the first time we see Papa Nakano, despite looking like a villain, he just wants his daughters to pass the exams. he just needs to be more of a father.
Itsuki, Ichika and Yotsuba got great moments in this episode that really made their characters shine

season 2 episode 6:
this episode was fucking amazing
this is the episode where all of the quintuplets realized their feelings for Fuutarou and agreed to be rivals. this is also the culmination of Fuutarou being a tutor, as they finally passed their exams

Nino absolutely destroys the standard harem/romcom tropes and confesses straight to Fuutarou's face when he didn't hear her while riding the bike, she even dared to go into the mixed baths with him. unfortunately, Itsuki were there behind the wall trying to figure out who Fake Itsuki is

the worst part is that i'm loving her development of becoming more independent from her sisters and dealing with her insecurity. and then she follows it up with one of the most underhanded strategies in the entire show, lowering my respect for her

For all we know, the anime might go with an original ending with different winner.
If there is season 3, though, it will probably stay close to the manga.
EDIT: I initially used the trope Gecko Ending, but I felt that as the manga has concluded, it doesn't fit here.
