Did they just reuse Baraka's ending in MK 9 for a story beat? That's literally what happened in his ladder ending, he smells the final boss is a fake and kills him.

Makes for a good Call-Back if nothing else.

It wasn't exactly the best ending but it was still eons better than his MK 4 ending

Maybe that just didn't happen in this version? Judging by what snippits we saw, this appears to be after the normal ending, when it's just Lu Kang by his lonesome.

In fairness, no one in the MK universe is good at solving issues with dialogue except maybe Kitana.

The Aftermath trailer is excellent and all fighting games should aspire to the amount of dedication NRS puts into their narrative.

That's a timeline where Kronika is still alive, there is an undead version of Liu Kang out there somewhere and one divine looking Kang seeking to revive Sindel with Shang Tsung help of all people.

Kitana Kahn is the MK 2 version pulled into the future and thus knew Liu Kang for a couple weeks at most. Not at the "let me desecrate your mother's body with this guy everyone hates" stage of the relationship.

This conversation made me realise that Liu taking Kitana with him to rewrite history malrles a little less sense as this Liu and Kitana have only just met. They don't have the full history of the original timeline or the revenant versions behind them.

I know it won't happen, but I'm holding out hope that Frost's friendship involves her singing "Let It Go" to continue the Frozen joke.

IMHO, time travel generally makes a series worse when it's introduced. It only really works if it's already part of the premise of a series. So stuff like Quantum Leap and Doctor Who is fine.

Usually when I want to say "This series introduced time travel in a cool way down the line!" it's a spoiler.

MK is all about the over-the-top cheese though so I can't say it didn't work out. Did make things hard to follow in the background but usually before you stop to think about it too hard someone has already torn out someone else's spine.

I think there's one piece of media that tackles time travel correctly despite not being a time travel show: The Ultimate Enemy from Danny Phantom.

But even that was only in a self-contained movie and thus didn't derail the series itself. Time travel only shows up one more time in the series, and it's explicitly to teach Danny not to mess with time.
