Super Smash Bros Ultimate (SPOILER Thread)

You know what would be a real surprise for me at this point?

A character from a predominantly Western series: either an indie series (Shovel Knight is already an assist trophy, but maybe Madeline or Sash Lilac, etc) or more established one (like Kerrigan or Guybrush) whose games have been on Nintendo systems.

Nothing else would really shock me, even with their more out there decisions.

I've seen Doomslayer or Dovahkiin bandied about.

Unless it's Crash, I don't have any real interest in a western character.

That said, Rayman and Steve also have pretty good chances and I wouldn't hate Kerrigan, Arthas, or Tracer.

I'd like the source, but I have to say that just what's posted looks pretty bullshit:

• They got a Squeenix character, but wasted the slot on something most people don't care about
• Two character from Mario spinoffs, which Nintendo rarely acknowledges
• Two Namco characters! And the widely-discussed Lloyd over the actually probable Yuri

KOS-MOS is the whole reason why I find the list skeptical.

I think Banjo and Kazooie are the most likely western characters. Microsoft and Nintendo have been on fairly friendly terms this generation, and IIRC Phil Spencer has stated he wouldn't mind having Banjo represented in Smash. It also helps that Banjo-Kazooie is much more heavily involved in Nintendo's own history than any other third-party IP.

It was a combination of things, but the bullshit leaks were a big part of it.

It just comes across as posting for the sake of posting and getting attention. I wouldn't bother with bringing up leaks unless they 1) look plausible and 2) come from a decently reliable source (so not 4chan).

Good theory. Except there is still a huge roadblock that Banjo/Kazooie have to overcome to be in smash.

And that is Minecraft. One of the few Western properties that has Japanese appeal.

Here's unpopular opinion, I rather have Master Chief over Banjo & Kazooie.

I mean, I rather have Banjo over Steve? anytime of the day, but if I really had to pick a Microsoft rep, it's going to be John.

Unfortunately, Master Chief was deconfirmed on Twitter by one of the Halo devs

So the more realistic Microsoft choices are between Banjo and Steve. There is a reason Nintendo steals all the sony properties

And those two not being nintendo characters comes down to licensing. Mario RPG was co-developed with Square and they retained the rights to all the original characters in that game, Geno and Mallow included. For Banjo, i think Rare managed to keep the rights and now belong to Microsoft. Ironically, they wanted to snatch Donkey Kong's rights instead but that obviously didn't happen.

The Banjo & Geno not being actually Nitendo characters part, not Master Cheif being deconfirm. I'm assuming he's part of the top wigs 343 industries

Still holding out hope for both of them, but not too optimistically. I honestly wouldn't mind Steve though, in part to have a character who shares my name, and in part because I think a Minecraft stage would be really really cool.

The biggest thing people keep forgetting for Minecraft is that we're explicitly told that we're getting music with each pack.

Minecraft...does not really have music.

At this point, I'm not really taking any leak seriously unless there is some serious concrete evidence, even if they have characters I really like in them. (I'd be down for Fawful getting in the game, though.)

I'd love to have both Banjo/Kazooie and Steve myself, honestly. Banjo/Kazooie have been one of my number one picks for Smash for a while and I love their games, and despite not really being into Minecraft that much, I don't think I'd mind Steve at all and I think he could bring something new to the table as a playable character. (Between the two, though, if we could only get one of the two I'd definitely go with Banjo/Kazooie.)

Maybe they'd pull from the Story Mode games? Do they have music?

The real choice would be

Banjo Kazooie as fighters, a Minecraft stage, and the music is from a variety of miscellaneous Microsoft I Ps.

I'll wait for Fawful to make it into Mario Kart or Mario Party, which would itself be a small miracle, before I consider him remotely likely for Smash. Also for Smash to start having regular dialogue that would justify a character who is popular primarily for his dialogue.

I still can't believe no other Mario RPG characters are in other spin off games in general.

Didn't Nintendo say themselves that all the fighters would be from franchises not represented on Smash already? Or was that a lie I heard on the internet?

Nintendo said that the fighters would all be new

Which is obvious for pretty much everyone except those who legit don't realise that every fighter's already in this game, which is probably the intended target for that statement

I think the part about the DLC characters being from entirely new franchises was just a rumor spawned from people misinterpreting Reggie's words at the Game Awards, if I'm informed correctly. Nobody at Nintendo actually said that.

There's been people interpreting that statement to mean that all DLC will be third-party...

Personally, I'm expecting at least one (probably two) of the characters to be first/second-party Nintendo characters.
