"Hey," said Ellie, "far as I'm concerned, you're fine as is. That said, I can see why they might be getting the willies. I mean, let's face it. You didn't exactly start off a big bad demon, did you? From what everyone's told me, you used to be a lot more reserved. And now you're goin' around slaughtering people without a second thought. You really don't think that's gonna turn some heads?"

"Yeah, yeah, I understand why they're concerned." Mikael sighed. "I just don't see it as a problem, y'know? It doesn't matter, anyways. It's not like a bit of therapy can hurt you."

He smiled. "Anyway, I don't think I got the chance to bring it up, but I'm glad you're in our class now, love."

"Hey, glad to be here too!" said Ellie. "And maybe once we're outta here, we can do some real chemistry. If you know what I mean."

However, that would have to wait. Before anyone could say anything more, Reinbach drove into the room on a rather sleek hover bike. It was light blue and glowing as though it were radioactive, and it flew around the room like a drunk moth before Reinbach finally managed to crash it into the desk. He somehow managed to stagger to his feet in one piece, though his glasses were a lost cause. "Note to self: Never use budlight as a fuel source! Not unless you wish to crash another desk."

He turned to the class. "Anyway, welcome once again to the wonders of science! Truly it is man's most wonderful and glorious art worthy of being sung of and praised throughout the ages! Or at the very least it beats pushing papers for a living. However, we are not here to discuss just any science. Instead, we shall be delving into the most wonderful science of all: Mad Science! As for why it is wonderful, it is because I say it is so. Easy-peasy."

He pushed back his sharp rimmed glasses as he composed his thoughts, making sure they were squarely on his face. "Now, as for today's subject, what can anyone tell me about shrink rays?"

Mahvash leaned over the accident site, hands folded behind her back. "Ah, you live," she said as he began to move. "Cool crash, excellency." She returned to her desk without much ado. Dr. Rienbach did consider himself fine to continue teaching.

At his question, she endured the silence for but a moment. "I imagine the important principles are that they shrink living things without killing them and shrink objects without their mass being compressed into black holes. On that, they seem only to shrink objects, not energies."

She tilted her head with a small smile. "What will you tell us about them?" The daeva was no expert on these things by any means and knew them best by combat experience. But, she could get some momentum going, even were she way off. It would not do for the class to stare at him like lost sheep until he gave up expecting anything from them.

Sam just gave a deadpan look at Reinbach, as he cleaned up his creations. While science wasn't exactly his strong point, but he felt like he had to try.

"That they generate questions about any idea of conservation of matter" He said, unsure "And when using it on living things, it must be able to keep their organs from being affected by the suddenly much smaller sizes"

Well, he said something. That might count for something.

Reinbach's Class

“Ignoring the issues of survivability raised by my classmates, a functional shrink ray should be able to lessen space between atoms or otherwise in order to decrease physical magnitude while hopefully leaving density somehow unaltered. In other words, inconceivable following current scientific logic,” came the droll voice of Ebony from her place on the far left of the classroom, arm stiffly raised. “But you did mention 'mad science', sir. Are you implying there is a way to achieve construction of such a device beyond common sense?”

This girl's like a machine, Lucy thought to herself absently. They've kind of already addressed all the concerns. I don't think it's worth answering in this case...

"All important points!" said Reinbach. "According to all known laws of science, shrinking one down to any height would either be impossible or absolutely catastrophic. However, there are in fact two ways to achieve the impossible. One is to be completely ignorant of absolutely everything and somehow do it anyway. In fact, that is exactly how I invented teleportation! I'm still not sure exactly how it works. However! The other and far more reliable method is this."

He dug into his pockets and held out a small silver quartz. It sparkled like diamonds underneath the light and was almost mesmerizing in its brilliance. "This is a dwarf quartz. Originally there was only one of its' kind. In fact, I stumbled upon it by chance. But it was when I realized its use that the decision was made to synthize artifical dwarf quartz with almost identical properties. None of them are as potent as the original, but they serve their purpose. On their own, they are worthless, but when used in the right fashion, it is capable of making the impossible possible. Or in this case, successfully shrinking someone without making them go boom."

He put away the quartz before pulling out a black raygun from his other pocket. He aimed it his chair. Without a moment's hesitation, he pulled the trigger and fired. In seconds, the chair shrunk down to the size of an ant, barely noticeable to all but the trained eye. "As you can see, the result is Wunderbar! The chair retains its' density without combusting or collapsing in on itself. The effect of the quartz stabilizes the subject, making shrinking or even growing possible. However, one must be careful not to overdo it. If they do, they may shrink down to microscopic levels. Perhaps even subatomic. And there may not be any coming back from such a fate. No pressure!"

Reinbach walked over to the closest and pulled out several non operative rayguns as well as several bags of quartz. "Now, in this line of work, you may never know when you will have to deal with some madman who is attempting to turn New York into his own personal toyset. In such an event, it is important to know how a shrink ray works. Not only will you be able to properly deal with it, but you may even be able to reverse engineer it to regrow whatever was shrunk. And who knows? Perhaps you may even wish to use one yourself! It was a favorite of Shrink Lass' back in the 60's."

He began passing out the rayguns and quartz, as well as an orange to each student. "To that end, each of you shall attempt to build their own shrink rays. As you can see, much of the initial work has already been done for you. It is really just a matter of placing the quartz inside the raygun and making sure that it is properly connected via the proper wires. It will also come with a set of instructions. Make sure to follow them to the letter. Otherwise, you may create a growing ray instead! Or worse. After that, your goal will be to use it on your orange and shrink it down to the size of a moth. Any lower and your score will be lowered as well. Now, unless there are any questions before we begin..."

(Mitch listens closely, then stares down as his disassembled raygun on his desk in front of him. Wow, a real life shrink ray? One he can build himself? He just hopes that no one will end up using one on him or anyone else once they finish building it. He also wonders how applicable one of these could be with his own superpowers...nah, probably not.)

(Mitch picks up the instruction paper and looks up at Reinbach.) I don't have any. (He says before looking down at the instructions and reading them very carefully before he starts.)

"A couple," Mahvash said, reading through her own set of instructions. "Stumbled upon your quartz by chance, you said... what were you doing then, to stumble upon that quartz? And how did you synthesize it?"

She ran her hands over the instructions repeatedly, taking notes off to the side. She would have to know what the other combinations did later. The doctor himself had said that this same set could yield a growth ray. She would play around with the thing in the training room later.

Reinbach's Classroom

Well, this isn't the strangest thing we've had to do, I suppose... Lucy thought to herself as she picked up the items and carefully looked them over. Not too complicated, but still, mistakes could be made. But... non-critical mistakes aren't exactly an option when it comes to breaking the laws of reality... how does this guy even work...?

Ebony was already nose-deep in her instructions, one eye scanning across the paper in an almost mechanical fashion with the other occasionally flicking away to look over at the crystal; which was currently revolving in the air just to her left. Once apparently done, it lowered back onto the desk and was replaced by the shrink ray itself.

“If I may, sir – I presume appropriate safety measures are in order? If, say, one of us does accidentally create a ray with microscopic capability, what's to stop them from unintentionally setting it off whilst it is pointed towards another class member?”

"If you must know," said Reinbach, "I was visiting the first colony on the moon after they had finally finished building it. However, as a scientist, I could not resist exploring the surrounding area outside of it. Who wouldn't want to explore another planet? Or planetoid I suppose. But it was when I was leaping across the moon's surface in zero gravity that I just happened to find it. I am still not sure where it came from. Some ancient alien civilization perhapa? But regardless, it was there for the taking."

"As for how it was synthized," he said, " I am not the one to ask. I let the Saint Foundation's Science Branch handle that bit of buisness."

He turned to Ebony. "These rays should have come equipped with special limiters that would prevent such a thing. As long as you follow the instructions to the letter, they should turn the ray off if anything like that occurs. Of course, if you do not, then you only have yourself to blame."

Mikael gave the instructions a once-over before he started tinkering with the device. His first instinct was to use his power to try and repair it, but he recalled what happened the last time he did that to a strange raygun. Granted, this one seemed much more stable then that sex change beam, but still.

He'd learned basic gun maintenance from his grandfather, but even though this device looked like a gun, it's parts were much more complicated. Nonetheless, he persevered, heavily focused on the task at hand, never once raising his head as he worked.

Ebony held her gaze on Reinbach for a moment longer, before relenting with a sigh, a short nod, and a monotonous “Understood, sir.” Still, her worry was lingering in a mild state despite being assured, which was causing her to pay more attention to her classmates' work than her own.

Lucy, meanwhile, quietly continued construction of her own ray – discreetly eavesdropping on important clarification by the teacher as she did so.

Sam tried to not to wince with Reinbach's explanation, but he only had to go step by step and this should work well enough to, if nothing else, pass the class. While a couple hands held his instructions, to keep track on where he was.

Ok, do this He nodded, as he tried to do a few things. For a couple minutes, he managed to keep the work mostly smooth.

A second pair of eyes will do each of us good." And Rienbach had started off his direction with an if. They had time to double check.

Ebony was just closing up the finished ray when Matten made an unexpectedly excellent point. After exchanging a few glances with her classmates, she nodded – beginning to telekinetically switch them around each of the finished rays from person to person to overlook.

Minor alignment issues... just a degree off... the esper thought to herself as she altered the positioning of the internal crystal with a sharp 'click', before letting it levitate back over to its original builder.

Lucy found no obvious problems with the one she had received, and instead concentrated; letting a thin tendril of ink snake out from her sleeve and wrap around the raygun – transporting it back to its owner's desk. As soon as she did so, however, the tendril snapped back all to eagerly – Lucy looking more than a little fatigued from the increased effort it had taken and rubbing her temples as a result.

I hope I did okay... I mean, we could all just be panicking – it can't be that hard, right?

Despite herself, she swallowed.

"Yeah, I expected that..."

Lucien sighed as Ebony suppressed her emotions, before focusing on the class at hand. The Professor was...interesting, to say the least, for the new pupil.

"Shrink rays? Easy."

As he got the raygun and instructions, he gave them a cursory scan before getting down to business assembling the complete thing.

"Alright, gotta remember what Aunt Joanna said. Like riding a bike."

Parts and wires crossed, crossed and snapped in and out of place as Lucien's envisioned telekinetic hands moved them about with surprisingly practiced precision. In almost no time at all, the raygun was complete, floating into his hands.

"Ta-da! This isn't the first time I've had to make a shrink or grow ray before. My aunt taught me how to make one so I could practice my telekinesis by making something smaller or larger and hence lighter or heavier!"

He rubbed the back of his head with a sheepish smile.

"I'm kinda...maybe...am the worst telekinetic in the family. So I dabbled a bit in other stuff."
