Error message

Whenever I try to visit a page using query.php (Ask The Tropers, Trope Finder, You Know That Show, Query Wishlist or Query Bugs) I get an error message: "this page is having server issues - tvtropes admin".

Me too.

There was a database error this morning with the crowner activity function, but it was fixed. Was this more recent?

This is a known situation. The growing size of the wiki due to our increasing membership and concurrency has put stresses on some of the database systems, such as the one underlying query.php. (We also had an issue earlier with crown_activity.php.)

The admins are working on this and hope to have a solution shortly, probably involving improved optimization.

In the meantime, please use this topic as a substitute for ATT and other queries.

Will past reports still be on ATT (or a searchable archive) after the fix? Or is the data gone?

As far as we know, the data's all there, but the queries to retrieve it are causing performance issues: specifically, crashing the database server due to excessive memory usage. Once the queries are updated, everything should resume as before.

We can always throw more hardware at the problem, and indeed that's in the cards, but a real solution will require some optimization.
