At least now New Mutants will likely get a release.

I doubt that Disney would have pulled it. They have nothing to win there. The movie has already been made after all.

So there is a Chinese New Years poster for Dark Phoenix that was released last night...a hour before Disney released similar posters.

Doesn’t seem like Disney wants to pull it.

A few years ago, Sony helped promote X-Men: Days of Future Past with a teaser at the end. I can see Disney doing that for a company they are about to own.

IIRC, Sony promoting X-Men: Days of Future Past, that was part of deal they made with Fox over Marc Webb. He was supposed to direct a film for Fox during that time, but Sony managed to convince him to direct The Amazing Spider-Man 2 instead. Fox agreed to let him go, so long as Sony helped them promote DOFP. That's why the theatrical cut of The Amazing Spider-Man 2 contained a clip from X-Men as The Stinger, even though the two franchises had no plans of crossing over at that point.

Even though the deal won’t be complete until June, would they still be allow to make money off of Dark Phoenix?

Unlike Sony with the merch deal, I doubt they will get much money from DP.

So Television Critics Association panels are happening and Lauren Schuler Donner apparently spilled some interesting X-Men related beans:

Namely:

  • When Disney inevitably (but not now) casts for Wolverine, they'll be looking for someone much younger than Hugh Jackman.
  • Apparently, it's on Disney as to whether we get those Gambit and X-Force movies in the near future or not.

I'm guessing "Yes" on X-Force (especially if they include Deadpool) and "No" on Gambit (which has already gone through half a dozen directors).

if they ever get around to an Xmen reboot they'll probably include Gambit in the line up

Gambit's still a great vehicle to explore the seedy underbelly of a superhero universe regardless of which universe he's in, so I hope they continue with that plan.

Plus, he's basically the walking embodiment of 90's X-Men nostalgia. evil grinevil grin

Here's something I've been wondering:

Disney bought the rights to the Star Wars franchise from George Lucas, but Fox still holds the distribution rights to the original Star Wars film since way back in the day. When the Fox and Disney merge and those rights are consolidated, do you suppose there's any chance that will lead to a DVD/Blu-Ray release of the original Star Wars films sans Special Edition edits?

I recall someone on Twitter asking someone at Lucasfilm (Dave Filoni, I think?) about this, and he said no, they were specifically requested not to re-release the original cut by "you can probably guess who."

According to Deadline, there's been "significant progress" with the merger. South America still needs to approve the deal, and while we don't have a stone set date for when the deal will close, Fox expects it to finish around the first half of this year.

Also, Fox Corporation (the spin-off arm that gets the stations) is gearing itself up with an SEC Form 10 registration. It starts trading when the deal ends.

Apparently because of the Disney-Fox buyout, Fox Broadcasting is re-naming itself to Fox Entertainment.

Isn't there already a Fox Entertainment?

This is a day old, but the Hollywood Reporter has a story on the anxieties Fox employees and executives are going through as the deal gets close to completion (one worker is referring to that day as D-Day). A few other takeaways:

  • Fox's film slate will be cut from 12-14 to 4-5 movies a year.
  • Disney will not take over the marketing and distribution of Fox's current crop of films until the merger is done.
  • Since Disney doesn't have any room in their Burbank lot for some of the Fox divisions like Fox Searchlight and Fox 2000, for now, they'll remain on the Murdochs' Fox lot.
  • When the deal is done, the Fox gift shop will sell Star Wars merchandise again.

Non-franchise film and starting directors just received a really big hit. sad

[up] It's important not to loose sight of the fact that, well, this was inevitable the moment Fox decided to sell their movie making division.

If Disney didn't buy it, then someone else would have, and something like this would have happened anyway. And honestly, there are a lot worse hands that it could have ended up in than Disney (coughcomcastcough)

I rather get less if each of them is top notch. Plus, I think just the need to fill the streaming services will open up a lot of opportunities for small films.

Independent from the merger, I predict that there will soon be a split between "big screen" movies and "Small screen" movies...meaning block-busters, comedies, some horror movies and movies which rely on impressive visuals will be heading for the theatres, while everything which works just fine on a small scale will end up on streaming.

[up] Yeah, I mean, at least Disney is apparently making a serious attempt to keep as many people as possible in equal jobs, and it is apparently offering a gracious severance package for those they can't keep. They also not rushing into getting rid of Fox's distribution arm...looks like they intend to seize it down bit by bit.
