Given that Trissa and Alfyn are the third and sixth characters respectively on the character selection screen, with Olberic and Primrose between them spelling out TOPA with their initials, it seems the theory that the initials of the eight travelers would spell out OCTOPATH is likely correct.

♭What.Ohh, multijob system, noice.
I wonder how open the game world will be. Like past the point of picking your protag and doing their opening segement, how much can you just do in whatever order or even just completely skip?
And all the protags names spelling out Octopath would be dumb and clever and I like it.

This is from the same people that brought us Bravely Default. Word salad nonsense titles are kind of their thing.
Octopath Traveler makes some sense even if it's weird.
It's actually pretty tame in that regard for Square. Compare the names of half the Kingdom Hearts games, which has stuff like 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue.

If a tree falls in the forest and nobody remembers it, who else will you have ice cream with?I figure the game's just been called Octopath for so long that everyone just accepted it as the name.
Besides, it's about eight people who are traveling.
presumably there will be some paths

I have a message from another time...Buddha is the secret final boss.
April Overview Trailer:
Nintendo Everything's Summary
H’aanit is a hunter who lives a solitary life in a village deep in the woods. Her mentor left the village a year ago to hunt a demon called “Red Eyes”. Worried, H’aanit sets out to look for her mentor and the demon. Her Path Action is “Incite”, which she can use to set animals she has tamed on someone. In combat, she uses bows, a weapon class that has high accuracy. Hunters can also increase the critical hit chance of allies or delay the actions of enemies.
The second newly revealed character is Therion, a thief. His past is a complete mystery, but his shady appearance and the rumors that have sprung up around his mysterious origins have made the nobles and the wealthy weary of him. Naturally, as a thief, his Path Action is “Steal”, which allows him to steal items from people. You won’t necessarily use that ability only for personal gain though – you can also steal items and give them to people that desperately need them. In combat, thiefs use daggers and can strike often thanks to their high speed. They can also steal HP and SP from enemies and lower their stats.
The trailer also explains Path Actions in general a bit more. Path Actions are split into two general categories: “Noble” and “Rogue”. Generally, a set of two Path Actions have the same end result – for example, acquiring items from people. The merchant Tessa can use her Field Command to buy them, whereas the thief Therion can steal them. The Noble path of buying them always succeeds, but requires you to spend money. The Rogue path of stealing is free, obviously, but has a chance of failure. Getting caught while stealing lowers your standing with other characters, which can result in them not wanting to talk to you and thus you being unable to accept certain quests. This can be fixed by talking to innkeepers and giving them money to increase your standing again.
The trailer also introduces Sub Stories. Put simply, these are side missions that take place apart from the game’s main story. Sub Stories heavily involve Path Actions, and there are often multiple ways to clear them depending on which Path Actions you use.

"We're all paper, we're all scissors, we're all fightin' with our mirrors, scared we'll never find somebody to love."Neat! English Trailer is also up edit:
Therion's english voice acting though...

He doesn't sound like he's supposed to be surprised, though. It's a pretty general deadpan rogue kind of voice.
Visit my Tumblr! I may say things. The Bureau ProjectMhh yeah surprised wasn't really the best word for it but I couldn't think of a better trope to describe this. Just a very unenthusiastic line delivery overall but maybe that is Therion's character, we didn't really get the same clear voiceover like Alfynn and Tressa had in their reveal trailer.
In other news the game was rated M in Australia for medium impact sex and violence.
Edit: The japanese site also got updated with some info on the new characters, wtf Therion is 22, from the inital artworks I would've assumed that he was the youngest in the cast or at least the same age as Tressa.

I get that sort of deadpan, kind-of-bored and jaded vibe. It sounds less 'acted'.
Visit my Tumblr! I may say things. The Bureau ProjectSo from left to right, we have the 4 noble characters and the 4 rogues I assume.
I wonder if one can actually gauge the "vileness" of them from left to right, considering that Primrose and Olberic stand in the middle and Prim's path action is so far the tamest of the rogue options, while Olberic's path option still involves violence albeit consenting.

Not sure if it's been brought up here, but it's believed that the first letter in each of the 8 heroes names correlate to the 8 letters in Octopath.
- Olberic
- C???
- Tressa
- O???
- Primrose
- Alfyn
- Therion
- H'aanit
We've only got two left to reveal and it fits so far.
Considering how out of the left field Alfyn and H'aanit are, it might be futile to guess the remaining names but the Priestess would be the first 'O' and in my head I keep calling her "Odette".
I doubt that, considering that H'aanit attacking unsuspecting people with animals seems more evil than Therion's pickpocketing.
Well YMMV on whether having your priced heirloom stolen is worse than being on the receiving end of Jack Bauer Interrogation Technique .
She doesn't even get information, though, she just beats the shit out of people with no warning.
I found a version of the game's boxart that I think would work better as Octopath's page image than the one I currently gave it, but I'm having issues with reading the file, so I can't resize it in Paint so that it isn't too large of an image to upload.
The storm has now resided, the wolf now rests.I just tried uploading it without resizing, and it worked. Am I missing something?
We have an automatic resizer now, but we're not supposed to use it because it puts some extra burden on the servers. It's basically resizing the image every time someone opens the page, which slows down loading by a surprising amount.
I'll give Square Enix this, they didn't announce the game too early.
