It'd be scarier if it was the Princess, given that the Princess is such a completely benign, harmless image.

So I'm officially patenting the first "Disney Princess horror film."

Because that sounds freaking hysterical.

  • Musical number about murder
  • She'll have the ability to summon animals like bears and honey badgers and pretty much go full Alfred Hitchcock on you

Another thread.

But it wouldn't be a named princess, it'd be a composite, a blood-soaked parody of them.

Although Jasmine and Snow White certainly could be terrifying if you wrote them a certain way - one lives with a tiger after all.

The kids seem quite well cast but I am increasingly worried they are getting Pennywise totally wrong (and yes I know these are only teasers but still...) Even granted that clowns have since gotten a creepier reputation than before, this Pennywise is so Obviously Evil it's just ridiculous. And given he hasn't even said a single word thus far (when the original Pennywise rarely shut up) I just don't know what to make of it.

From the looks of it, IT is more like the novel.

If I recall correctly, Tim Curry's portrayal was quite different from the book, so it makes sense that Skarsgard would try something different to make the character his own.

Personally, I always found book's Pennywise to be disturbing most of the time. Even during the library scene, when he's making those lame jokes, he's still creepier than Curry's Pennywise.

So to me, he looks perfect.

I think what jakobitis is getting at is that Pennywise is supposed to be someone that children would trust. I think that was more or less the point of him taking that form in the first place. We see that in the conversation it has with George in the beginning of the novel. It's very chipper and friendly and George only regards him it the same suspicion he would any stranger that would come up and talk to him. It's only after George trusts him that it shows its true colors.

[up]It's been a while since I've read the books, but it seems like it's only Georgie where Pennywise does the whole "get him to trust me before I eat him" schtick. Every other kid killed or attacked by It was subjected to nightmares from the get-go.

The idea in the book is more that the Clown is terrifying children because IT likes to taste their fear. IT really isn't supposed to be anything but terrifying. Georgie was a little bit of an outlier in that he somehow is not afraid when he encounters someone lurking out of the freaking sewer.....Well, at least not afraid enough to just run away. If I remember it correctly the main reason he doesn't is because he really, really wants his boat back.

I think the clown form is just something It likes without reason. I've seen people mention that the clown is supposed to seem inviting to those who see It, but I don't think that's the case.

Off the top of my head, the ones who see It as a clown first are Georgie, Don Hargarty (Adrian Mellon's boyfriend) and Ben. All the others see It as something terrifying at first: Bill as Georgie's photo, Bev as the bloody sink, Stan as the drowned kids, Mike as the giant bird, Eddie as the leper man, Richie as the werewolf, Eddie Corcoran as the monster from the Black Lagoon.

Even the three I mentioned, their encounter with Pennywise wasn't exactly pretty. If I recall correctly, Georgie feels uneasy because of his fear of dark places and strangers and only stays because he didn't want to disappoint Bill by losing the boat, Don hears the clown making fun of Adrian and their screams for help, and Ben is unnerved by the man in the clown sit standing on the ice with the balloons that floated against the wind. And with Ben, we are told how he is kinda scared but can't help himself from getting closer.

Either way, as I said before, the fact that It doesn't have lines in the trailers may be a marketing strategy to make people think It's just another scary, voiceless monster, when It is much more than that,

[up]If you're thinking of the Tim Curry version of Pennywise, imagine him laughing with every shot. "Wa-ha! Wa-ha! Wa-ha!"

An interesting part of that shootout story is that a lot of the participants mention seeing a clown, but no one can agree what gun he was using, since everyone remembers the clown using the same type of gun they were using.

Wasn't able to comment on the teaser earlier because of my terrible internet connection, but now that I've seen it I liked it. The banter between the losers is pretty good, I don't remember if it's particularly faithful to what happened in the books but it feels like it could have been.

Yeah, misgivings about Pennywise aside I like the look and feel of the rest of it, the Losers Club seem pretty well cast and in character (again with the caveat we haven't seen much yet.)

What I meant re: Pennywise was that the creepiness was because he looked just like an actual clown, a man in face-paint and a clown suit (with the vague awareness he wasn't that at all being what caused the unease.) Pennywise was different to It's other guises in that he wasn't outwardly scary in appearance... or at least, not until now.

I reserve judgment and I can see why no-one is ever going to try and out Tim Curry Tim Curry (because no-one ever could) but I have qualms for sure.

Regarding Pennywise not having any lines in the trailer, I can't imagine them changing that too much so I'm inclined to agree it might be to subvert expectations. Pennywise was very chatty and that was a really important aspect of its character and what made it so terrifying.

And Pennywise will always be Steven Weber for me. Seriously, anybody who hasn't heard the audiobook version of IT, you need to check it out. I just used my monthly Audible credit to get the book and Weber makes a very, very long book just fly by with his masterful narration.

I found an article from some time ago where the director talks about Pennywise having punchlines and putting on an act. I don't think we have to worry about him talking too little.

I have seen the original and when I first seen it. It was scary when I was a kid but I saw it again later on television and it was dated and actually kind of funny, I know people are going to automatically say the new one cannot compete because of what I call Nostalgia Blinders cool. I think the remake looks much better and scarier. As far as the jump scares. Jump scares are actually what help determine if a movie is scary in my eyes because no movie has really truly scared me now that I am a adult. Movie just don't scare me but if they make me jump that's the closest thing to a scare for me. As long as the jump scares are not over used and well placed than I am fine with those. Anyways this movie looks like it is going to be amazing and I will definitely go see it. I also heard it follows the book more than the other one. Although being true to the book does not matter to me because I do not read books. I enjoyed the Evil Dead remake much more than the original also and I feel sometimes remakes are better.

Edit: Also I wanted to add as far as the change in the clown itself. It is a big improvement and I heard it sticks closer to the source material.

The one thing I want to know is which monster It'll transform into this time around.

I think I read an interview where the director said that, as they had changed the setting from 50's to 80's, the monsters would change as well since the children would have seen different movies than in the original version.

It could be The Fly, The Thing, Gremlins and zombies, lots and lots of zombies. :P

Or maybe other Stephen King movies from the 80's like The Shining or Pet Sematary.
