On F!Robin such a huge popularity spike, one factor might be that there is one Youtuber called Alpharad (who does Smash content) who basically has gone and say to vote for her.
Probably not the only factor, but I feel like there are outside powers being in effect.

I just really want an underdog to win. The top four in the men's division are all their game's respective protagonists. Chrom's debatable on that, I guess, but he's still the same niche as the other three. It's not... It's not an exciting competition on that side of the fence.

Seriously speaking, popularity contests are like that in general. The most visible characters dominate the top.
And you speak of underdogs, but Reinhardt was a recurring antagonist in Thracia; he'd be like the Black Knight without the hardware limitation of the SNES. And he's popular in FEH and meta sooooo.
If anything, Lif is the underdog.

Wow, I'm really surprised to see Micaiah up so far. I don't even like Micaiah that much, but it is nice to see a Tellius character so far up. I don't think she's got a chance against Camilla though. Sigh... This is just disheartening.
Brave Alm is pretty cool though, even though I think Marth deserves one more just based on his reputation and role.
