I was not very impressed with Castlevania the animation iteration of Death
For one thing he sounds like fucking Varney
But also he doesn’t do anything really impressive except be big
They try to borrow impressiveness for him by necessitating him being killed by a God Killing Knife but that’s kind of an asspull itself so whatever
I wasn’t impressed by this large skeleton man
Forever liveblogging the AvengersIt felt like they were setting him up to be an overarching or major recurring villain for the Netflix-verse Castlevania at first, but then Trevor just kills him and even gets to survive for his efforts.
Which I understand - there was no guarantee they'd get a follow up, and judging by how rapidly they wrapped up plot points left and right to ensure the story had a satisfying conclusion and absolutely no loose ends aside from Vlad and Lisa existed, I guess having Death out there would of qualified as one, but he really does just come across as the super mode of one of the worst characters in the season and a villain largely disconnected from anything happening in the story.
My issue was that aside of how overly complicated the whole ritual was, is the writing have death saying stuff like "I will eat your soul and shit them" which it was so vulgar it make me lost any idea of caring.
Hell, me and my girlfriend were cheering for damger or whatever vampire who fight alucard, trevor and syphia to put a least a good fight.
"My Name is Bolt, Bolt Crank and I dont care if you believe or not"I can certainly understand why someone would dislike his vulgarity but I loved it. Normally personifications of death are solemn or generically raspy, but Castlevania completely rejected the cliches and made him hilariously irreverent.
To bring up a similar character, that's also why I loved Hades in Disney Hercules. James Woods gave him an extremely unique energy.

"Sandwiches are probably easier to fix than the actual problems" -HylarnIt’s a fun joke that Death parodies the tendency for eldritch Godlike beings to engage in Sesquipedalian Loquaciousness and never curse at all by making him Sophisticated as Hell where he does make grandiose speeches but pontificates it with some honest cursing.
“Why is it that only human hands could ever reach the afterlife? Don’t you think that’s weirdly fucked up. I certainly can’t do it.”
Makes his portrayal a lot more striking.

"I am Alpharius. This is a lie."The problem is that everyone curses a lot in this series, so Death vulgarity just come as grating because at least you can expect him to sound better as the final villian of the series.
"My Name is Bolt, Bolt Crank and I dont care if you believe or not"Eh Dracula never curses like a sailor and I don’t recall Isaac ever going in a profane rant.
"I am Alpharius. This is a lie."I think dracula did said "I fucking dracula tepes" or something in his fight against the trio and Issac....well, he is issac, he is best chararter
"My Name is Bolt, Bolt Crank and I dont care if you believe or not"Issac does get to say "You're so fucking rude."
Yeah the thing is that it makes Death sound samey to a lot of the other people in the show
Forever liveblogging the AvengersSypha also went most of the series without cursing....well, at least until:
I think that, for a series like this where everyone can get a bit vulgar, for those rare characters who don't do it, it works best as an Out-of-Character Moment / O.O.C. Is Serious Business type deal, like the video shows.
Hell, Trevor straight up lampshades it.
One Strip! One Strip! In those cases it’s a Precision F-Strike.
"I am Alpharius. This is a lie."It dosent help death as impersonating another vampire most of the time, so him as death just come as....exactly the same, just bigger.
"My Name is Bolt, Bolt Crank and I dont care if you believe or not"Ellis has used the same unsubtle and vulger characteristics for years. Just listen to these guys.
Say what you will about cartoon villains but at least Skeletor always had class and wit.
Even the YMMV page for that game points it out how Anvilicious that scene was.

Yeah, the cursing was so prolific in the series that I honestly didn't notice that Sypha didn't curse until the characters pointed it out. The characters don't all have the same voice, but they feel like they do. You could write a line like, "I killed the fucking bastard," and I can literally hear that in every single character's voice without it sounding in any way OOC.
My Tumblr. Currently liveblogging Haruhi Suzumiya and revisiting Danganronpa V3.It's very Whedon-esque in how it feels like the characters were hijacked by Ellis for the sake of Author Appeal punchlines (in this case the heavy swearing and goat sex jokes).
The worst thing is, swearing can be used effectively, just ask Stephan Fry.

Yeah, I will said some of them are fine with the profanity: godbrand by is intensity, trevor because is way of being and fanhir because he speak of himself so much, but some become annoying like death for example, others stand up in part because they dont go into vulgar rants.
"My Name is Bolt, Bolt Crank and I dont care if you believe or not"Agreed - it's not that certain characters swearing is inherently bad but when every single character is incessantly doing it gets pretty tedious.
"These 'no-nonsense' solutions of yours just don't hold water in a complex world of jet-powered apes and time travel."Presumably the next show will dial down on that now that Ellies is gone.
"I am Alpharius. This is a lie."My point is that the gods associated with death weren't well liked due to the fact that most people don't want to die, back then and now. Hades wasn't a misunderstood nice guy like some stories made today show.

He was, relative to his family
Hades doesn’t have a lot of myths so he doesn’t have a lot of myths where he ruins everything by not keeping it in his pants or by being petty or whatever
Even him taking Persephone was something Zeus told him to do
Forever liveblogging the AvengersIf anything, Hades is just the least shit of the Olympian gods.
That is the face of a man who just ate a kitten. Raw.
Another thing they could have done was make the Castlevania Death, a shard, or aspect of thegreater personification giving physical form sworn to, or befriended by Dracula, which is why he can't just snap his fingers and boom, you keel over.
There's rules in place to make sure that doesn't happen, kinda like how Gandalf works. He's basically an angel but he can't use his full power because doing so would shatter a continent.
