With the focusing crystal restored to the western tower, Amystra and Azadokht took up places on either side and began to channel their magic into its prismatic form. Tendrils of dark energy rose from Amystra's arms like a fog of comforting night, while divinity sparked in arcs of golden electricity from either of Azadokht's hands to the other. Poured into the crystal, the opposing magicks at first clashed with a fury that threatened to split the gem in two, but under the mages' masterful control, they coalesced into a dark storm cloud that crackled with holy lightning.

As the mages did their work, Vera and Xel in his humanoid form touched down atop the eastern tower, and she hurried onto the ballista's firing platform. The engineers had indeed set the weapon up for Vera's use and even loaded a bolt into the barrel for her already, but as she wound the winch to cock the arms, a sudden metallic screech signalled one of the weapon's old gears breaking, and the winch turned limply in her hand. Without a word, Xel resumed his draconic form, and, dropping onto all fours, seized the butt of the bolt in his jaws. Pulling against hundreds of pounds of tension from the massive weapon's arms, the mighty dragon laguz dragged the bolt and its bowstring down to the base of the barrel.

As their magics' combination neared critical instability, Amystra and Azadokht unleashed it. Darkness and Light shot from the tower's peak into the sky, arching down toward the palace nigh-uncontrollably. It first touched down on the roof near the courtyard, sending shards of ceramic tile exploding in all directions as the magic blazed a line of destruction toward the Rock of Vis.

Watching through the ballista's rangefinder, Vera pulled the trigger just as the beam of magical annihilation crossed into the Rock's courtyard, sending her heavy missile rocketing toward the obelisk.

Her aim and timing were perfect, and just as the magic struck the Rock, so did the ballista bolt. Standing at its base, the Fire Emblem held in his outstretched hand siphoning power from the stone, Leoran's scream was consumed the resulting explosion. Arcane fire rippled into the sky like a punishment from the Goddess herself, shaking not only the palace, but the entire island. Those inside the palace grabbed for the nearest doorway or piece of furniture for support and the power of the blast cracked the walls and shattered the windows.

For a short time, it seemed as if the explosion would go on forever. But as the heat faded and the ringing in their ears subsided, the Company and Vissans alike looked toward the courtyard.

"Did... did we get him?" Malia dared to ask.

As if in answer, the fleeting traces of magic in the air above the palace suddenly stopped in their path, and reversed direction as if caught in a vortex, and a moment later, a second blast rang out over the land. Blinding fire, crackling lightning, and pulsating darkness turned in a hurricane of magical power where the Rock had once been, shrinking as it coalesced into a single form; that of a man.

   "I have not come this far to be thwarted by a pack of children playing at greatness,"    Leoran said.    "I admit you have been a greater thorn in my side than I ever anticipated. Once I have dispatched my old nemesis the Emperor, I will give you the honor of being my test subjects for the limits of my new power."

The last energies of the surge flash from Azadokht’s palms as she stumbles away from the focussing crystal, stance unsteady from the mental strain and then from its results.

Then she hears the same booming voice that everyone hears. And she breathes, and focusses.

“He can take that kind of power in an indirect strike, huh?” Azadokht falls into a soft, then a confident smile, winding her ribbon back round her forearms and grasping it in hand. “Then let’s try something more direct. Come on!” With that, she races forward; sighting a point where the blast has weakened the fortress wall, Azadokht wills forth her Light, her weapon trailing a river of sparks, and flows into the forms of her dance. Thus does she carve a path.

Azadokht moves to H18, performs a Dance of Stamina for Kiri, making a strike against the wall at I18 with the War Ribbon, and continues to L18.

Osroes grimaces when he hears the voice – the lull in combat brought on by the explosion will not last long now, not while the Calderian king still lives. Said king presumably being on his way makes the attempt to draw out his guards decidedly dicier.

It is only after that re-evaluation that he pays attention to Leoran as he talks. And the passion of his anger focusses his mind.

“Do you hear your sovereign’s words?” Osroes calls to the Calderian soldiers as they emerge, Rsama sure-footed despite the blast and lending his companion strength and trust. “Those are the words of a man who has no regard for the world beyond that which he can control – who would gladly cast aside or burn away anyone or thing not within his power. I have seen it before.” With the slightest direction Rsama buffets his wings, tossing pegaz and cataphract backwards to land towards the corner of the room; Osroes reaches up and removes his helm, just for a moment, speaking clearly to implore: “Such a man is no leader, that you know. I ask: use your divine gift, think, and lay down your arms.”

He replaces it, already hearing as his allies rush up behind him, and nocks another arrow. “Decide!”

Osroes moves to R27 and prepares an attack with the Greatbow against Calderian 26 and anyone who takes their turn after him.

Requesting that, as part of his turn, Addelus moves to I18 and prepares to use the Warp Staff to teleport Kiri to K26.

Requesting that, as part of her turns, Malia performs Dances of Stamina for Vissan 9 and for Sophia.
