Kaguya Wants to be Confessed To

Non-soul-destroyingly-bad translation out. Even in these trying times, I've got to appreciate Kaguya's soft spot for Ishigami.

Which is a complete reversal from before lol.

So how are you guys feeling about these recent turn of events?

I think it's definitely something that needs to be addressed, yeah - Kaguya's feelings and the damage her family has done to her among other things. As nice as the big damn kiss was, these crazy kids do still have a lot to figure out, and I think that's about as natural a way to keep things going after a mutual kiss as any I've seen.

See, while I agree with that in theory, I'm not too keen on the execution here. It feels a bit cheap to me that immediately after we got a really good development the story backed away from it and reset itself. I was hoping we'd get at least a few episodes of Kaguya and the President being happy about what happened (presumably while the plot dealt with Ishigami's mess) before things got problematic again. They'd both earned a little bit of happiness, and it would have been a nice subversion for the story to try it's hand at, instead of going back to the status quo.

Mind, I'm not incredibly bothered by this. I'm still having a lot of fun with the way things are going. It's just not exactly how I wanted them to go.

^Yeah, agreed. I have no complaints with the overall arc, but the execution could have given them a few chapters before they started overthinking things.

I can't believe Shirogane is fucking dead.

Cmon, i want to see Ishigami story.

While I was fully on board to go full fluff before the inevitable drama (not the best time to binge the manga, I feel), I do think that this is the sort of issue that's best dealt with sooner rather than later. Even if the kiss was great and all, both of their reasons for not wanting to confess (which are nicely represented in their internal monologues this chapter) are kinda still valid in their minds, so having a quick bit of conflict in order to deal with it is better in my mind than having it slowly fester and cause problems down the line.

I Ts still incredibly frustrating as a reader for the most part though.

I feel like it is frustrating in a very romcom way, for sure. It doesn't make me as "angry" as these kinds of developments usually make me feel, personally.

Romcom "frustrating" is hard to pull off really well. It's kind of a necessity because it's the hook that keeps you coming back- "when are these idiots gonna tell their feelings to each other, maybe next chapter...gah what adorable morons" but also if it overstays its welcome it will lead to a lot of built up ill-will within the readerbase.

cough cough. Nisekoi. Cough.

Fortunately, this isn't really a reset switch - it's made things awkward between the two of them, sure, but the "reset switch" is Kaguya's abusive childhood defense mechanism. So they're not dating, sure, but they are still addressing a new problem.

That's exactly why I was a little bit disappointed. Short of Tsurezure Children, few romcom manga ever deal with what happens once people actually get together, and I was hoping we would get to see that here.

Jitsu Wa was such a treat for that.

Slight mood whiplash there at the end of this new chapter.

But yeah, just in time, some more perspective on Kaguya's life and what may be the signal to a change. I'm glad. I was just complaining that this development seemed a bit too contrived, so if we're not spending too long bogged down in it, I'm down. This is apparently a part 1, though, so presumably next episode is the president. I'll hold further comment until then.

The return of the quack doctor

I frankly don't remember this guy at all. Any one recall where he appeared?

When Kaguya fainted, he the doctor that treated her and diagnosis that she with being lovestruck. Read chapter 79.

Also when Hayasaks wishes to die.

Well shit. Shirogane's Mom is just as fucked up as Kaguya's Dad

The interesting thing is that Kei went to live with her mother, but eventually came back to Miyuki and Papagane. There's definitely a story there.

Also heavily implying that Kashiwagi's about to get knocked up, just to increase Maki's suffering.

Well, catching up, and I see we're back to Kaguya being insufferable again... I get that she's a highly damaged person, but that doesn't make Ice Kaguya pleasant to be around when she's just being awful to everyone else.

That was a quick turnaround lol.

But man, the author is really good at taking what seem to be quirky character traits and flipping them by making them extremely depressing.

Kaguya's ice queen/tsundere schtick? Her family's twisted values have robbed her of the ability to connect to people properly and just wants to be acknowledged by her father and be normal

Shirogane's workaholic and lack of talent schtick? Because of his lack of talent, he felt like a failure and his mother lost interest in him, and so believes that working hard will make her return.

I just want these kids to be happy ;_;

^I'll leave my post intact as a testament to the author's writing ability. It is hard to want to be around Ice Kaguya, and that's the kind of thing you need to make the readers feel, not just tell them about. The Kaguyas' argument in 146 wouldn't have been nearly as impactful without the tension buildup of Ice Kaguya having free reign for the past few chapters.

It's important to understand that Kaguya knows she's not a good person and constantly hurts people around her, even the ones she cares about. She hates herself for it, especially since she's trying to change for the better.

But yea, it really does sell the emotion.

So, should a second season occur, do you think it could catch up to the current chapters?
