Looking forward to this. The question is, do I alternate between this and The Dragon Prince or watch all of either of them first? Been waiting on this for awhile but I'm really hyped for The Dragon Prince since it's being written by the same guy who wrote ATLA.

Her voice sounds familiar.

If by "her," you mean Hilda, then there's probably a reason for it. She's voiced by Bella Ramsey, best known as Lyanna Mormont from Game of Thrones.

She's also Mildred Hubble (the main character) in the 2017 version of The Worst Witch.

This looks like an amazingly adorable adventure. The visuals and atmosphere are absolutely spectacular thus far.

Just finished it. Hilda is my favorite character (Obviously.) though the Wood Man is a close second who needs more screentime. I do wonder what a second season could be like though since the show has adapted all but the most recent book so far.

I watched it. Never even heard of Hilda till a week ago.

9/10. Not the greatest cartoon of all time, but still definitely high up there for 'Best Animated Show of 2018'. No major overarching story, just a wholesome slice-of-life adventure show, and I wouldn't have it any other way.

I want a deer fox so freaking much.

This is an absolutely wonderful show. I love that while some of the magical elements are unknown to most there are also things that are common knowledge. Like the fact that troll repellent is sold in the hardware store.

Watched the whole thing last night because I remembered it was a thing, and lord am I glad I did. What an absolutely adorable, wholesome, feelgood little show. Very much appreciated in these rough times for me personally. Virtually every character is a precious cinnamon roll who I would protect with my life.

I think I can finally put into words what makes it feel different than a lot of other urban fantasy shows. It makes the supernatural feel normal, but not mundane. It doesn't treat those elements as apart from the world as a whole, but still approaches them with a sense of wonder.

I really liked the atmosphere, art style, and music direction of this series. It didn't LOVE it, but the excellent animation was always a joy to watch, and I'll definitely watch a second season.

Yeah I loved it. Kind of wondering what they plan to do next season though since they've already adapted all but one of the books.

I don't think it changes that much this season only 5 of the 13 episodes were direct adaptation of the books anyway.

So!

The ending to "The Ghost" left me with such a Gut Punch that I thought "well, now I have to see what happens next." And well, one episode left to another and I ended up finishing the whole season and...

Totally. Worth. The Two Years. I Spent. Waiting. For This Show. gringringrin

Because finding the other 2 books the show adapted (already read the first and second while I was at university) was next to impossible (probably because the books are rather niche), I didn't know what to expect and that might have been for the best. That said, I googled "hilda luke pearson netflix" so often that it led me to previews of pages from said books, so it was sweet recognizing what dialogue came straight from the source material.

I also liked how most of the episodes were adventures made specifically for the show if only because they help build the world of Hilda in a way the casual Netflix-binger can enjoy. I'm also glad they changed up Hilda's Mum (who has an actual name now!) so she's less of a worrywart and isn't prone to snapping so often at Hilda (like in an infamous moment in "The Bird Parade" story that this show kindly ignored).

TL;DR: I love this show. And I love that everyone else is loving it. Now, if no one minds, I'll be waiting for someone to come along and make a Netflix toon out of another favorite indie comic of mine, Atomic Robo. And also Nobrow's Fantasy Sports. wink

Frankly, Hilda's relationship with her mum might be my favourite thing about it. For one, we rarely get this, in most children shows the parents are either non-existent of the father is around, not the mum. It is even rarer that we get to see a mum who is not basically a helicopter parent who has to be sneaked around at every turn, but a reasonable adult who trusts in her daughters abilities.

I just finished watching the series on Netflix. I'd never heard of Hilda before, but I'm planning to go to the library tomorrow to see how the books compare to the show.

I was a bit surprised that they did a multi episode arc at the end. I was also surprised that the tide mice subplot never got resolved. I spotted two mice under Hilda's bed in the last episode, and I think they showed up a couple other times as well. Maybe that's something they snuck in for season 2.

The librarian is my favorite side character. I hope she shows up again. I found the wooden man annoying, but perhaps he's supposed to be annoying.

I'm curious, why do you find the Wood Man annoying? Personally he's my favorite character after Hilda herself. He's an asshole but damn if some of the thing he says and does aren't funny.

"He's like family."

"No I'm not."

Watched the series over a couple days, was very impressed!

I absolutely adored the setting, Trollberg and the surrounding countryside were the perfect sort of 'approachable adventurous' for a kids' show. Safe enough that one really can imagine someone Hilda's age being able to roam the streets unsupervised, but with enough magical potential around for suitably awesome escapades.

And the magic, wow! This show superbly blends the mundane and the fantastic. I love how this is a world where things like mountain giants, house spirits, and teenage girls turning into nightmare witches are just, like, accepted things! This is the sort of Magic Realism I've been searching for.

On the technical side, the animation, music, and voice acting were all top-notch. Really adored the limited color scheme, the British voice actors, and the synthwave-ish music that wouldn't be out of place on Stranger Things.

Some of the plots felt a little disorganized/unfinished, but I really like the small bits of continuity dropped through the show, enough to keep the episodes feeling connected but without locking out people who might drop in halfway through.

Favorite episodes: The Nightmare Spirit and The Nisse/The Black Hound.

Also! @ Targetmaster Joe, amazing work keeping this thread up during the production years. I only found out about this show a few days ago, so I can't imagine 2 years of waiting must of felt like!

This show is very good.

There's a lot of elements that gel together like the atmospheric soundtrack, the lovely way the lighting is handled, Black's acting for Hilda, and the exploration of the world's wonder.

The season 1 ending where life goes on and the nisse is shown to be happy with Jellybean in the vast wilderness with a reminder of what happened at the very beginning is just so perfect.

So I finally got around to reading Hilda and the Troll.

I was a bit surprised by how morbid and fatalistic book!Hilda was. "Such is the life of the adventurer" "There's no point dying if noone know how it happened"

Also, I was a bit confused by Twig's introduction. It's implied that Hilda is meeting him for the first time, but she just calls him Twig without explicitly deciding on a name or anything, so maybe they were together before? Who knows.

On to Midnight Giant: Twig is now white. But the result comes across as uncanny valley, especially in the face. Book 1!Twig looked a lot more fox like, not just in the coloring but also the shape.

Now for Bird Parade: Twig is back to his cute self, and looks a lot more like the show now. Also, this confirms that Hilda met Twig at least a year before moving to Trolberg, although given the lack of a timeline in the first book, it's impossible to know whether that was their first meeting or not. Also interesting that the book implies a real world religion - the towns people thought that the thunderbird was Odin's Raven.

One other thing I find interesting is that Hilda and the Troll opens with a map of the area around Hilda's cabin, but most of the places on the map are never seen within the story (because she moves after the second book). I wonder where they came from. The map also seems to be the only difference between Hildafolk and Hilda and the Troll, though it could also be a paperback vs hardcover thing.
