Pokemon Go

I think people just assume because the Pokemon is never seen again, you get a candy and the Professor can't possibly have enough space to accommodate that many Pokemon. They forget that we also get three candy just for catching the Pokemon, one for walking it, or 1-3 for trading it, so it's not really a very solid theory.

Yeah, that's pretty much a Discredited Meme at this point.

I still refer to transferring as "turning them into candy" regardless.

Oh, as an update to the question about Nincada - I'm seeing local reports that they are available as a quest reward for catching five bug-types (which in my experience is a fairly easy quest even when it isn't a bug-centric event). It will evolve to Ninjask on its own, but Shedinja is still only available from weekly research.

In addition, Pinsir can also be shiny, and is a reward for catching 5 normal types.

Okay, some things from the APAC region:

• You can get the special moveset through evolution as well, so today’s the day to evolve those high IV Gastly you’ve been saving.
• Like the birds, shiny Gengar from raids have a 100% catch rate.

Shiny Cubone and Ponyta will be released soon to commemorate the release of Ingress Prime, the overhaul to Niantic's original game Ingress! (those two because their shinies are green and blue, the colours of the Ingress factions Enlightened and Resistance, respectively). If you've ever wanted to try Ingress, now's a good time; it's a very different game despite both being location-based.

In other news, I just got my first EX Raid invite!

Adventure Sync dropped for me yesterday. The weekly rewards apparently reset on Mondays, since the game told me just now that I'd gotten above 5km and tossed about 20 free Pokeballs at me. I still need about 130 Magikarp candies for the Mew quest, and I anticipate they will be a lot less annoying to get now that it's counting all my steps.

Shedinja is still considered an evolution of Nincada even if there's no way to evolve it, so it gives 5 Nincada candies when caught instead of 3 "Shedinja candies."

Heh, kind of a tenuous connection, but I quite like Ponyta, so I won't complain.

Grats on the Ex Pass, BTW. I'm still personally frustrated by the system's rather poor algorithms. I got a pass for Nov 14 that I'm going to be skipping because the round trip would require minimum 45 mins in the middle of the work day (1:30-2:15PM) and... seriously, screw that for a Deoxys. Hell, I'd be hesitant to even do that for a Shadow Ball Mewtwo.

Yeah, all of them are Thursday this wave, but mine is at 5:00pm, a much more sensible time.

How did folks do with Gengar? None of mine were shiny, but before the event, I found two shiny Pinsir, including one over 90%, so that's pretty fun.

I'm also excited over the launch of shiny Ponyta, in part because that also means we'll be able to evolve out shiny Rapidash, which is perhaps my favorite Gen I shiny. I'm somewhat curious if shiny Cubone means that shiny Alolan Marowak will appear in raids (though come to think of it, I don't think Alolan Raichu can be shiny despite the availability of wild shiny Pikachu, so I'm not going to get my hopes up).

I did 27 raids and the first 2.5 hours gave me no shiny whatsoever. Then that last set threw two at me back to back, a non-shiny, then another shiny. One of them was even 91%. Aside from that, got a 98% weather boosted non-shiny and evolved up two level 35, two 98% and two 96% Gastlies, all of which I'd been sitting on forever.

Hit a bunch of Pinsirs, though no shiny. I'm not terribly concerned with it, but I was checking for the hell of it. I did end up with a 0% Pinsir, which amused me (I later found out that someone else in our group got the same one and had it be shiny).

Did about 14 raids and got two shinies. No shiny Pinsir though.

Event is live. Looks like Alolan Marowak can also be shiny after all.◊

Okay, a 0% shiny is kinda hilariously awesome. For me, it continued my trend of having all of my super-good IV shinies be caught at absurdly low level (for example, that 91% shiny Dratini I caught way back on that community day was level 1 when I caught it). Also, given that it's practically guaranteed to be better when you trade it, that sounds like great trade bait (my second shiny Pinsir is pretty down there, too, so it's total trade bait).

I saw the obvious effects of the mini-event well before I got the announcement. I'm seeing a decent number of Cubones and just an obscene number of Ponyta. No shinies yet, though.

As a totally satisfying coda to the Gengar event, there was one particular EX gym that I camped for about 20 minutes (in the rain!) in the hopes that people would come by to raid it with me. Turns out it was worth it - I got my first Deoxys EX pass there. I wish it wasn't around lunch on a Thursday, but I can juggle my time such that I can make it.

An evolution item called the Sinnoh Stone has been found in the code. Whether this will be used for everything or just the items that only evolve one Pokemon (like the Magmarizer) is uncertain, as is whether it'll replace location-based evolutions like Magnezone or Glaceon/Leafeon.

The new Ingress has a prestige system for max level players that allows you to return to level one with all of your inventory, badges and unlocks retained. More importantly, it allows you to switch factions. Since Ingress and PoGo now have a shared code base, features can now be easily ported between games. Something worth noting, perhaps.

• Double Dust for Catching and Hatching until the 13th! This might multiply with Cyndaquil Day to make it x4 Catch dust, or x5 with weather, x6 with a Star Piece, or x7.5 with both!

I promised myself I won't touch Go until it has Sinnoh, so here I am now. I'm kinda annoyed at the timing they put Sinnoh dex though - just a few days later they had halloween, and then right now they have the Ingress celebration. The sinnoh mons barely allowed to make an appearance.

I don't get Adventure Sync feature though. So basically as long as you linked an account that's using Google Fit or similar to the game, you'll get distance/eggs/candies without playing Go?

Huh... Buizel isn't spawning around here at all. And it was kinda odd because we have been having a lot of rain here lately, so it's not like I'm lacking in Water-type spawns (even with the Ponyta/Cubone rate buffed to high heaven). I'm going to try to hit by the waterfront after work, but so far, they're not local.

I think Niantic is getting a little too eager to do special events with altered spawn rates at the moment, and it is slightly screwing with other stuff they put in. My example was that I got a "Evolve 2 Pidgey" quest for a Caterpie encounter. I thought that'd take maybe 30 minutes to complete, given that Pidgey is one of the most common spawns in the game, but with all the events, it took me three days just to find two Pidgeys to evolve (luckily, I already had the necessary 24 candies, so that's all I needed; I can't imagine what a newer player would be dealing with). I get that they want to have quests that match the monthly events going on, but when the daily/weekly events screw with the spawns that said quests cater to, it gets frustrating.

Yeah, it tracks your movement without needing to murder your battery, as it really should have been from the start.

I heard Buziel wasn't supposed to be in the wild and is now only in 5km eggs.

The 2 Pidgeys for Caterpie quest really should have had a wider range of options. Starly, in the very least, should have been in. Ideally, the quest would also include Spearow and Taillow.

I feel like Niantic is getting a bit antsy about the winter. The pace of events in the summer was a bit fast, but manageable, but the way Oct and Nov have gone, it's like Niantic is desperately screaming at the top of their lungs, "Hey, check out this new event or announcement every two days, guys! We're still relevant enough that you should totally play our game in -25C or worse weather!"

Buizel are also 1-star raids now; in fact, there's one active on my tracker now (but I'm stuck at work, so I can't reach it).

I'm slightly annoyed at that and Shinx being unavailable as wild encounters. I could deal with Mawile and Absol not being wild, since neither evolve, but I am not looking forward to the 50 Buizel candies and the 125 Shinx candies needed solely via hatching and raids (like I said before, basically everyone I know that has a Shinx is now walking them, myself included).

Yeah Buizel are 1 star raids here.

Also I am not sure if it's my phone or the app, it crashes whenever it updates location while Fit is active.

Buizel is apparently still in the wild, just stupid-rare. Might be a bit easier to find now that the Ingress event is over.

Well that was terrible, half and an hour wasted because of server problems. Though managed to recoup and evolve a typho with good stats. I did get a shiny... but it has shit stats judging by appraisal.
