Long story short a character who's shown up like once in the anime became prominent and got a name, which accidentally referenced something and there was a shitstorm.
An apology was issued and it was fixed, but now people are giving Horikoshi shit cos some characters have the same birthdays as nazis.
Like Bakugou's birthday is 4/20 which is obviously a weed joke but it turns out that was also Hitlers birthday.
To be precise, the reference in the name wasn't accidental, but it was more offensive than Horikoshi was expecting it to be to overseas audiences, specifically Korea and China, if I'm remembering correctly.
You're remembering it very wrong.
Really? *shrug* Okay then. My memory was the reference was there, but meant something else in China/Korea and that's what caused the original flap that started everything else and prompted the hashtag.
Also, would 4/20 be a weed joke in Japan, since I recall it's based on American police codes? Why would Bakugo even have a weed joke attached to him?

Because he really needs to get high.
"I am Alpharius. This is a lie."It's 4 as shi from SHINEEEEEEE! and 20 as hatsu from bakuhatsu.
I heard about this elsewhere but I thought it was a typical minor twitter shitstorm. It comes and it goes and we all forget in a week.
I'm sure the creator of one of the most popular Japanese shounen franchises in the world will be fine.

I'm sure the millions of people who are actually born on April 20 in real life will be thrilled at being called Nazis.
Song of the SirensI get the first part, but not the second.
Think 二十日(hatsuka) or 二十歳 (hatachi).
In today's episode of My Hero Academia, the part of the villain will be played by Zatch Bell characters.
If I recall correctly, there are four characters with controversial birthdays, one being Deku...who shares his birthday with the founding of the Japanese Communist Party.
Look, if it had been Shigaraki who shared that one, maybe this would have some weight, but Deku’s the main protagonist, so...yeah, that’s not how you do fascist apologism.
Oh God! Natural light!I miss Zatch/Gash Bell, wouldn't mind if that one got a reboot.
The birthday stuff is just people looking for problems, otherwise why not bring it up before?

I mean. I share the same birthday with a football player, an Olympic Swimmer, and several music stars. Am I linked to them in any way? No. People are just being overly sensitive and trying to find something to be outraged over.
Hell, the controversial character's name was meant to be a reference to his body shape more than anything.
There is at least one meaningful birthday, and that's La Brava's being Valentine's Day IIRC
Song of the SirensAnd "Best Criminal" finally arrives in live-motion at last!
A fitting voice indeed...
And now when seeing the actual video, I can totally understand why the guy can't get that many views.
I mean, if he put that up on Youtube in real-life, how would you judge it?
"Is there a reason it's all shot from waist height?"
"My camerawoman is very short."
Oh, Japanese, I love when you make no sense. Goddamn ateji.

The birthday stuff is just plain trolling. It's one of the cheapest shots you can make (with 7 billion people and 365 days, there's plenty of overlap) and i remember it as a very, very common troll.
Some people are legitimately hurt by the controversy. And some people just want to watch the internet burn.
I read an article positing that this one was mostly down to Chinese and Korean bots, and basically a Comicsgate, alt-right leaning website blew it out of proportion.
So basically, the name thing was legit, but the birthdays controversy is essentially manufactured.
Oh God! Natural light!Hurt by what?
The "controversy" that some other person just decided to point out "X" character's birthday also happens to be the date of some random history thing?
YO. Rules of the Internet 45. Rule 45 is a lie.I wasn't very clear, but what i meant is that people were genuinely upset by the Maruta thing. As opposed to the whole birthday thing, which was a weak troll 20 years ago and it's still a weak troll today.

I'm not sure it counts as a spoiler, but even if it is, it's not a plot spoiler so much as a manga profile usually contained in the volumes:
I was watching the latest dubbed episodes with my roommate last night and noticed, along with that early shot of someone (I've been presuming is Eri) casting off a sweater in the opening, towards the end there's a very quick, blink and you miss it shot of Aizawa holding that same sweater.
That's when I realized not only was that first shot indeed Eri, but that sweater is one Aizawa picked for her, going along with those manga profiles showing his God-awful taste in children's clothes.
Found a pic of the sequence and the manga profile◊
I don't know if this was animated in the most recent episode, I haven't seen it yet, but if so then it's probably not a spoiler after all.
I have a new favorite character.
And how dare those brats call her a ditz and a floozie. She's just free-spirited!
I'm very glad Camie isn't dead. I thought Toga killed her and dumped her in an alley somewhere when she replaced her.
Also Bakugo is finally R E L A T A B L E. I also would want to hang all these kids from a tree and beat them.
It makes me wonder how Izuku would handle this, though. He's got a good heart and charisma that might win them over. On the other hand, he might cry a lot which is like blood in the water to these sharks. Also he would be the most hesitant to employ force, probably.
What a fun little episode. Definitely excited for more.

Go to the manga thread, but a controversy got out of control and internet just keeps on throwing fuel to that fire.
