Steven had a PTSD flashback during the whole thing which likely freaked him out enough to attempt it. My interpretation of that scene though was that Steven was subconsciously trying to hurt and shatter himself.

I saw it as Steven specifically trying to attack his diamond half, as White Diamond powers inverted his perceptions (i.e. he imagined his human half was the giant, powerful one). Repressed resentment for White Diamond seemed more the subconscious part.
(And everyone's free to keep posting just about "Homeworld Bound" in this thread, but we're already discussing this episode in the regular thread, and there was one leak left for a still-unseen episode.)
