A thread for discussing representation and diversity in all kinds of media. This covers creators and casting decisions as well as characters and in-universe discussions.
Historical works and decisions are in-scope as well, not just recent news.
Please put any spoilers behind tags and clearly state which work(s) they apply to.
This week, producer Ross Putnam started a Twitter account called "femscriptintros", where he puts up examples of how women are introduced in the screenplays he's read. And nearly all of sound like terrible porn or are too concerned with emphasizing said lady is beautiful despite whatever traits she may have. Here's a Take Two podcast made today where he talks about it.

Ah, right, Bird Box, the one where if you have a mental disability the monsters make you evil. :/
Bird Box was particularly infamous for "inspiring" idiot Youtubers to go around blindfolded. Try looking up "Bird Box Challenge" some time.
Netflix even issued a statement warning people not to try it.

Disgusted, but not surprisedIf it's true that he faked his attack, I really hope Jussie Smollett realizes how much damage he's done to real victims. This is unacceptable and he should be fully prosecuted.
"In 900 years of time and space I've never met anyone who wasn't important."Gets better. The NY Times article claims he did it as a publicity stunt to get a raise.
The really dumb thing is he hired two black guys to play the racists who try to lynch him.
Like. Racebend if you must, but the final product has to make sense.
I can certainly buy a pair of African Americans being homophobic, or having intense racism versus other groups of African descent, but in that particular way? Through MAGA and lynching? Smollett is a dumbass if he thinks he could keep this charade up any more than it takes to identify the perpetrators.
Well, everyone believed him at first, even here… Media are always quick to judge, so let's wait and see.
Because making up such a lie would be a really shitty thing to do.
Regardless of whether or not it was a hoax, people were quick to believe this story for a reason. There are people who refused to believe this story because they want to pretend racism isn't an issue any more. If this turns out to be a hoax, they'll feel validated but it won't erase America's reality.
Especially given that he apparently did it for money. “I didn’t make enough, so I’ll get sympathy points and they’ll have to give me a raise!” It’s every negative stereotype come to life.
The director of Dope will be adapting African-fantasy book Children of Blood and Bone.
I recently got this book and am currently midway through reading it, but what I’ve read so far would be an excellent fantastical film.
Also, the trailer for Jordan Peele’s The Twilight Zone.

First time posting here, sorry if this article has been discussed before.
Ohai Hail
A cruel, sick joke is still a joke, and sometimes all you can do is laugh.I’ve been hearing the Alita movie has also been developing a trans fandom, due to its body modification themes.

I'd imagine sci-fi tales of androids and the like are fairly attractive to transgender people, depending on what the specific story is about.
At the very least, it lends itself well to allegory.
Apparently Disney darkened the skin of white actors in Aladdin[1]
Just FYI that article is over a year old; we discussed it at the time.
I heard somewhere that they are making an adaptation for Lord of the Flies with all female cast. Any news on that?
E.T technically is a Isekai movieNot since the original announcement.
I think Ghost Busters 2016 may have led them to go "Actually you know what?Never Mind"
Also,I think they may have completely missed the point as so many have pointed out
New theme music also a boxYeah, quite a few people pointed out that the story is in large part a critique of toxic masculinity. A gender swap wouldn't really work. Judging by what Scott Mc Gehee and Evan Siegel said when they originally announced the idea, it seems like they were going to go for a Darker and Edgier Mean Girls or some shit like that.

Disgusted, but not surprisedtheir gender swap would be a predictable excuse to have as many tropes as possible to appeal to a male audience, they'd probably drop all the symbolism and metaphor too
New theme music also a boxThey'd probably appeal to a male audience by going "See? Women are just as bad as men! No, they're worse!" And maybe throw in some uncomfortable fanservice too while they're at it.

Disgusted, but not surprisedAnd throw in the sailor at the end and..
You can see where this going and why it's a bad idea
New theme music also a boxHmm, with the theme of Alita deciding to be what she wants to be, not what her dad has decided for her, it kinda makes sense.
An article on Bird Box and The Quiet place, two movies that uses disability as a superpower.
