Day 25

Hercules up till this point had then joined Ben on the dance floor and though he didn't know half of what was being played, he enjoyed dancing along to the rhythm of the music even if his dancing was a little ...ahem 'goofy'. Eventually the party came to an end and Hercules headed for the Library where he then went to sleep in a quiet and secluded spot.

Day 26 Library

Herc was abruptly woken up by a guy screaming: "SKYRIM BELONGS TO THE NORDS!" Upon hearing this, Hercules then bolted upwards and then rushed. over to where Ben was but by the time he had reached the doors, the screaming guy was gone. "Ben what's going on-?" Herc began to ask before he caught a glimpse of two dead bodies and loads of people fighting outside of the library through the window. Herc's eyes then widened at the sight while letting out a gasp at the same time: "Oh my gosh..." Ben then pondered out loud what the day theme was.

Miss Tairee then explained what the day theme was. Simply put, anyone who has an arch nemesis would appear in the city and they would have to be defeated to ensure that they were gone for good. "Arch nemesis? But the only enemy I have is..." Herc was just about to finish that sentinement when it hit him. If everyone's arch enemy were in the city then that would mean...

"Rean, Two, Caboose...I think we have bigger issues for us waiting outside." Herc then addressed the trio in a concerned tone as they arrived downstairs as well as dealing with what was apparently Makoto's sister. Ben then rushed over to a corner away from her to warn Makoto he was getting really creeped out by her. Herc was also getting creeped by Makoto's sister.

Random House, Second Floor—-A Harsh Awakening

"Good..." Makoto said to him. "Not having any more drinks though." This headache wasn't worth it. The strange sounds outside were getting louder, whoch only encouraged her to not want to see what it was. Maybe they could spend another day actually having fun if they avoided conflict. Something buzzed in her skirt pocket, and she groaned and reluctantly shifted away from Rex to sit up. It wasn't like that many people tried to contact her here, so it might be important. If it wasn't, she had no problems hanging up on them.

"Hello...?" she asked.

"Hey, it's Ben. Something weird's happening today, and these evil clones are showing up in the City and hunting people down and...Your sister's here. I think she's looking for you. And I don't think it's in a good way."

"Wait, hold on," She stood up as her mind tried to process what he was explaining. Any chance of her going back to sleep was gone now. "There's evil clones around today? And why would she show up here"- she paused, realizing the implications. For a split second, the same sense of dread that she felt upon entering Sae's casino palace hit her. "...Oh, that's not good. Ben, you need to stay away from her, you hear me? Especially if her eyes are yellow. That's not my sister, that's her Shadow!"

Library Lobby

Shadow Sae stopped when Two spoke to her, though she didn't seem to recognize her at all. She glanced back at Miss Tairee as she explained the rules for the day, and then smiled at Two.

"I did, in fact. Though I think I should really be going now." She looked back at Caboose and Ben as they spoke, feigning confusion. "It's a little rude to call someone "evil" without even knowing them, isn't it? I just wanted to see my sister, so if you excuse me..." The Shadow left the library and looked around outside, deciding where she should search next. She had a lead now, at least.

The library

As Makoto explained what was going on, Ben knew something was wrong, but he didn't fully understand it.

"Yeah, her eyes are yellow," he said to Makoto. "So she's not really your sister then?" Before he could get an answer, Sae's shadow started to leave the library, presumably to look for Makoto and do goodness knows what to her. He furrowed his eyebrows and sternly followed the shadow, despite Makoto's warnings. He stopped just inside the library, keeping a sharp eye on Sae's shadow so she didn't shift away.

"Okay, I'm gonna take her," he said. "It's hero time, I know it. I'm not gonna let her do anything to you. What's a Shadow and what can they do?" he asked, readying the Omnitrix as he held the phone with his neck.

Library lobby

"Each person's opponent is specific to them. Whichever person or entity was most antagonistic to you throughout your life, generally" Miss Tairee said idly to Garrett, still aiming at the struggling zergling. She'd made the rifle so it would have a more subdued sound of the gunshot, but it was still a bang as she finally fired, putting the shot through the zergling's head and killing it. The dead zergling vanished after a couple moments.

"So that's what's going on?" Fastanook asked as he walked over, able to overhear most of it with his ears. "I better call Wells" the gremlin added, taking his walkie talkie and starting to relay the relevant information over the militia channel.

Meanwhile, there was a familiar hollar from elsewhere in the library lobby. "Hey, Ben!" Louie called, jogging over to Ben with Ace the blaziken already out and running alongside the trainer. "I don't like the looks of this day" the trainer commented as he glanced outside at some of the wandering, unfriendly looking individuals, before adding simply, "we have a plan?"

News station

It wasn't long after that the radio at the center of the library lobby, along with the radios in other buildings throughout the city would crackle to life.

"This is Wells of the militia; to everyone who can hear this, it seems the rules of dying are a bit different today, and there are many dangerous enemies wandering about attacking indiscriminately. It is imperative that you stay safe; hide if you can, but if you think you can't, make your way to the library" Wells' voice announced from his walkie talkie.

"The whole city is going to be a combat zone!" then said the unnervingly calm and ever so somewhat enthusiastic voice of Trent Arsenault. "This is clearly our time! Rise up Chandler's Gunmen! Deliver the violence that Writer clearly calls for!" the man's voice went on.

"We'll deal with you soon enough, you bloody maniac" Wells' voice responded angrily, after which that seemed to be the end of the conversation.

City streets

"Hoooo! Ohhhh my god oh my god oh my god-" screamed Morty, scrambling over the fallen corpse of someone unidentifiable and ducking behind a nearby wall. Seconds later, the screeching blue alien thundered past, a one-man stampede if ever there was one... a screech that was cut short by the sickening crunch - the unmistakeable sound of blunt impact trauma.

An ominous rumble and the blotting out of the sky prompted Morty to poke his head out of his impromptu hidey-hole - and the teenager winced at the sight of the bladderhorn, its crumpled body flattened by a heavy tree trunk that had been gnawed into the shape of a crude club. The sky darkened as its predator hovered in low, its proboscis flicking in and out... then, like some nightmarish parody of a Thanksgiving dinner, its simply grabbed the fallen body of its prey and wrenched one of the legs off, jamming its proboscis into the oozing body and making a noise like someone struggling to drink a particularly thick milkshake.

Dodging around another confrontation that had nothing to do with him, Morty's feet pelted onwards. Get to the library. That was what Rick had told him, right? Get to the library. Also something about pineapples. Maybe. Rick had never been that serious in his life. But then again, what if this was all some kind of prank on his expense? It wouldn't be beyond Rick to do something like that... The reassuring glass shape of the library loomed ahead of him. Sanctuary. If he got in there, he'd be safe, home free, home and dry...

Morty bolted through the revolving door as fast as he could, narrowly dodging a stray laser shot going over his head as he caught his breath.

"Thank god." Morty panted, looking around at the reassuring shapes of the library, the stacks of books that he could easily lose himself in, the tables... the sight of the librarian casually plugging the skull of some horrible space bug...

"...oh no. Rick didn't... oh god, I've just really fucked up here, haven't I..."

Random house — Breakfast is a no-go

Rex sighed when Makoto stopped to answer her phone. What could possibly be so important right now? She should have ignored it. Hell, he could have shut it off without much problem if she had asked. He decided to just sit up like her. This day had hit the ground running so he might as well get used to it quickly.

"I guess this means I have to put a shirt on. Where is it anyway?"

Checking the floor, under the sheets, on chairs nearby or any other kind of furniture didn't reveal its location. Until Rex looked up. And saw it hanging from the wing of the ceiling fan. Which was puzzling. Who even used ceiling fans anymore?

With that little mystery uncovered, he got out of bed and put it on. As well as his pants. And his jacket. It had been an active night.

"Hey, there's people here! Stop being so loud" he yelled out to their very rude neighbor.

Specially since Makoto had received bad news. Something about Ben bringing up evil clones and Sae having some relation with them.

"Uh, mind telling me what's up with your sister? ...shadows were bad, right?"

"So she's not really your sister then?"

"Sort of... She's something that my sister created by accident. It's like a separate part of her mind that gained physical form." She looked back at Rex and temporarily muted her side of the call, giving him an apologetic look. "I don't want to deal with this today either, but I think we don't have much of a choice this time..." Not if these clones were hunting people down. Someone would come for them eventually. She never realized that watching someone put the rest of their clothes back on could be so disappointing. "I'll tell you what's going on with Sae as soon as I can. Let me just...put this call on speaker." Makoto un-muted herself and hit the button that would let both her and Rex talk to and hear the call. She set the phone down on the table to get her blouse, skirt, and shoes on while Ben continued.

"Okay, I'm gonna take her. It's hero time, I know it. I'm not gonna let her do anything to you. What's a Shadow and what can they do?"

"Ben, you can't just-I have no idea what she's capable of right now," Makoto said. "I haven't fought her yet, but I was supposed to before I was taken here. Shadows are like my Persona abilities, except there's no one controlling them. All I know is that she can use magic and is definitely stronger than me. I can try to find out more about her with the books I have, but that's going to take at least a few minutes. Where is she?" Makoto was already knelt next to her bag, looking for the Persona 5 book. She'd have to skip to the part where Sae's Palace came up and skim it for information. As if in response to Rex's yelling, someone fired a bullet through the window next to the bed. The glass was thick enough to not shatter, but there was now a smoking shard of metal stuck in the wall across from them. Makoto was stunned for a few seconds, some of the color draining form her face as it sank in how close that was to hitting them. "U-um, I don't think we're safe here anymore, Rex..."

lewis, day 25

"Uh, sure, but what are you oh of course."

I pointed from the stage at the few foolish saps who did not respect a vintage meme. "Thank you, I'll be here all night. We're all dust in the wind yearning for something bigger than us to complete our meager unclean selves, this weed trip is probably about to go bad."

I squeezed in some other less memeable music before the weed trip went bad, then spent a few hours staring at movies mumbling about coming of age until I was lucid enough to call it a night. As much as he insisted on trying not to, Arthur had passed out well before that point, and no amount of noise seemed to wake him up, so between that and the drugs I ended up just leaving the thing running the whole time, finally turning it off right before crashing.

It was...not a bad sleep.

day 26, street, it's like a buffet for things that feed on hate

"Good for nothing?" I blinked at her, sensing something out of place. "In reverse order, no, be more specific, and no but that sounds hard to miss." Cascabel floated down to about shoulder level, and I noticed it drooling a bit, with wide eyes. Concerning. "Do y'all have some sort of beef with these guys? I guess I expect that from the plant but I don't know about those other people to weigh in."

"Oooh yeah, we've got beef with them alright" the punk who asked about the car salesman asked, whacking the tire iron into his palm a couple times.

"Ugh, this was a waste of time" the drow woman complained. "Let's move on already!" she then insisted.

"I see, well, thanks anyway!" the fish-like woman said, as she held out her arm to the side, and something seemed to start digitally materializing there. "It was nice meeting you!" she added as she aimed the newly formed rocket launcher in Lewis' general direction and fired.

The library

Ben frowned as he watched Sae's shadow walk away from the library. Makoto would need a few minutes to do some research before she could tell him what the shadow could do.

"I don't have a few minutes!" Ben insisted. "She left the library already and if I don't tail her, I'm gonna lose her! Then she might get you guys and it'd be my fault for not stopping her!" He furrowed his brow, selecting an alien. "I'm gonna have to play this by ear. And I'm gonna need all the backup I can get."

At that point, Louie approached him and greeted him. Ben nodded without taking his eyes off of the shadow of Sae.

"Yeah, we have a plan." He pointed towards Sae's shadow, which was already pretty far away now. "She's after Makoto. We need to stop her before she's gone!" he exclaimed and ducked back into the library before any other crazy people tried to attack him.

He pulled his head back up to the phone.

"By the way, be careful if you go outside. There's a bunch of other random crazy people who will try to kill you anyway even if you're not their big enemy," he warned.

He glanced back towards Louie. "Hold off now, if we just charge out now we'll have a hundred psychos gunning for us. We need to group up. Strength in numbers and all that." He thought for a moment. "Louie, Hercules, you two have any big enemies in your worlds that would show up to—" he started to say, before he went a little pale as the realization hit him.

"Vilgax..."

He hurriedly pulled the phone back up to his head.

"If a 15 foot tall green alien dude with huge arms and a squid face shows up run for your lives. I can't even beat him. Not even with my best aliens. He's way too strong for you guys! He'll crush you guys flat!" he warned.

"I can't tell you who is specifically after you, no. However yes, while they are technically allowed inside this library and can try to harm you if they'd like, the rules against violence that I enforce still apply to them as well. Everyone is effectively safe inside this building" Miss Tairee explained to Garrett.

Meanwhile, Louie thought for a moment. "Big enemies? No, not really" Louie said, sounding confused by the very notion. "I've got my whole team; we're ready" the trainer added in a more determined tone.

I ducked out of the way narrowly in time, taken by surprise, roughly grabbing Cascabel's head on the way down. "The hell was that about!?" I complained, the pokémon squeaking from suddenly being moved. Louie then arrived and asked Ben if they had a plan unfortunately the woman that Ben was dealing with previously had left the library. Ben then advised Louie and Hercules to stick together as the day was proving to be quite dangerous. "Right." Herc then said agreeing with Ben.

Ben then asked if Herc and Louie had any arch enemies that might be lurking around in the city: "Hades, the god of the Underworld. And if it's true that he along and Vilgax are here in the City, we'll need to tread carefully. They might show up anywhere at any time once we step outside those doors."

Out on the Streets

Little did Hercules know that his fears were right as a familiar grey skinned, blue flame haired, God of the Underworld was prowling about the streets of the city. Hades then stopped to watch a couple of zombies maw an innocent man to shreds as he was watching this the god of the Underworld couldn't help but smile devilshily as this unfolded in front of him. "Ooh nasty!" Hades commented as he continued walking past them and then chuckled a bit at the ensuing chaos. "I dunno where they dig these freaks up but this? This is entertainment, the venue doesn't leave a lot to the imagination and this is more a bit glorier than I'd like but hey a bit of chaos never hurt me right?" He then said pretty much expressing his thoughts on what was happening infront of him and unlike most arch enemies, Hades seemed to be minding his own business. A screaming skeleton then came charging at him with its arms outstretched trying to grab at his face.

Hades just rolled his eyes at the approaching skeleton not amused at this: "What is this amateur hour? Hey bone-boy, beat it." He then lifted a finger at the skeleton's head and shoot a blast of fire and then the next second, the same skeleton caught on fire, its whole body from head to toe was aflame and then started running away in the other direction. Hades then blew out the smoke that was on his index finger and continued walking down the street. "Yep still got it." He said proud of himself for doing it.

It looked like Hades wasn't alone, an old man had just noticed him roasting the skeleton and then complimented him on his abilities. Hades then turned to the old man in question as the latter was asking for his name: "Hades, lord of the dead, hey how are ya doin'? And also thanks for the compliment it's what I do." Hades said the last bit in a matter of fact tone of voice.

"Lemme see if I've got this right you are not a local around these parts right?" He then continued "Cuz I gotta say this place is nuts. Rean nodded. "Yeah." Whatever the Writer planned this time, it was clearly making a mess of things, as a certain cultist was shouting over the radio.

Looking away from the mess outside for a moment, Rean spotted Ben heading out the door with his watch at the ready.

Rean sighed, heading over to where the City Knights were gathering. By the time he got over there, though Ben already realized it was kind of a dumb idea to go out on his own.

"Right. The more of us together, the better." Rean said.

Then Ben brought up who he thought the city spawned, and Hercules brought up Hades.

Rean hummed, thinking about the question. Was there anyone like that for him? Patrick? No, despite his first impression (and tendency to bother his sister) he wasn't that bad. Maybe someone from the ILF?

Random House — "Where do these guys keep coming from?"

There wasn't much of a choice, of course. That was the way of the selfless hero. At least Rex and Makoto could fight together which if anything else, meant they had another excuse to spend more time with each other. Rex stretched in preparation for the fight to come, or tried to anyway. One day he would be able to reach his toes, he was sure of it.

In the meantime, Ben handled the situation with her sister. And for once him being in charge of anything seemed like a good thing.

"I have to admit it, he's got spirit" his worst enemy left something to desired though. Some tall squid didn't sound all that threatening. "...is that really the worst thing you've fought?"

It was good seeing him be heroic to a fault. Rex could relate. It was almost as if he were trying to make up for his earlier behavior. He didn't have to do it but the effort was appreciated.

"Hey, relax. She's just another shadow, you've got this" he told Makoto. "And remember, I'm here too"

Their rude neighbor took the complaint as well as a pile of gunpowder reacting to fire. In a more than literal way, given it shot a projectile that hit the wall not far from where Makoto was. Rex was frozen, surprised he hadn't been fast enough to react or even see it coming. Fortunately, Makoto had just been scared to death but was otherwise physically fine. Deciding to make up for the lost time, Rex positioned himself between the window and Makoto, and built one of his shields to protect her. Who knew if there were more bullets were that had come from?

"Are you ok?!"

"Yeah I'm...fine." Makoto said, though she hadn't expected him to construct a shield for her. "Probably shouldn't provoke the sniper again. We should get going..." Her clothes from last night switched to her leather armor and masked, and she pulled out her own gun as she looked back out the window. She grabbed her phone to continue her conversation with Ben, backing up to the bedroom door without letting the window leave her sight.

"I know you want to help, but if she's really bent on finding me, she'll go straight through anyone to get there. And that's...not acceptable to me either. I can't stop you from trying to fight her, but you don't have to throw your life away to protect me. I'm more worried about keeping her from attacking someone that can't fight back. We'll get there soon, okay? And we'll watch out for the...giant squid alien. And um...I don't know about the kinds of magic she has now, but I do know my real sister is very good at close combat. Better than me. Be careful." She hung up and tucked her phone away before looking back at Rex. Just another Shadow, huh? Makoto doubted it. None of the Shadows with Palaces were easy to defeat, but he was right about her not being alone.

"We'll take care of her...somehow," she said to him, before heading downstairs. "I do need to try to figure out what kind of powers she has though. Do you mind driving us to the Library while I do the research?"

Outside Library—-Rough Interrogation

Still in sight of the library for now, Shadow Sae watched a panicked man in a torn up suit of chain mail cross her path. With an unexpected show of strength, she grabbed him by the arm and almost made him fall over as she pulled him closer.

"Hello there, have you heard of a person named "Rex" around here?" she asked, ignoring how confused and terrified he looked.

"No, never..." he said, shaking his head frantically. Her grip on his arm tightened, and his armor dented a little.

"Are you sure? You aren't the lying type, right? Because I don't like those who try to play games with me..."

"Never, I swear it!" the warrior answered. How disappointing. Shadow Sae sighed and threw him to the ground.

"That's a shame. If you were willing to speak, I'd have let you live for a few moments longer. But just killing you would be very boring. Do you perhaps like to gamble, Sir?"

"W-what?" She placed a foot on his chest, somehow pinning him down without exerting much effort.

"A gamble. Like a game of cards, or dice. But there's no need to offer money here. We'll use your life instead. Isn't that more exciting?" She pressed down a little harder, and something cracked, causing him to yell for a second. "Now where did I put that betting table of mine? Do you prefer the color red or black?"

The library, coming to the rescue

Ben nodded into the phone as he listened to Rex and Makoto.

"I'll pick something durable, don't you worry!" he insisted to Makoto. "And yeah, I'll be careful." When Makoto hung up, Ben put his phone away. He listened to the conversation about gods and furrowed his brow.

"The one time I fought a god, it was a giant bug and I blew it up from the inside," he said. "And that wasn't even really a god, just some big tick these nutjobs worshipped as one."

He turned his attention back towards the shadow of Sae, glaring as he saw the woman stop to abuse some poor innocent.

"Now's our chance, guys! Be careful and keep an eye out for dangerous surprises! And above all, it's hero time!" He readied the Omnitrix, slamming his hand onto the watch's face. With a flash of green light, Ben transformed into Diamondhead.

The crystalline alien gestured for the others to follow him, and he rushed out of the library.

He put a hand up towards Sae as he ran, his hand shifting into a mass of crystal as a flurry of sharp shards erupted from his hand straight towards Sae.

"Let him go, Sae!" Diamondhead shouted, still running towards the shadow, now shifting his hands into fists again.

I can still hail the Horde even though the company has shamed us. Strength and Honor even if Blizzard has neither.

Two, O-oh

A special opponent? Troubled by what the others were saying, Two looked out the window - and saw bodies just lying around, not vanishing like she was used to by now. The alarm bells rang in her head: it seemed death was permanent today, and every denizen of the City was given a mortal enemy to deal with personally. If the Sae here wasn't the real Sae, but rather her twisted reflection, then her own must have been...

...oh.

Ben and Hercules's recounts of their nemeses left her more than a little concerned too, but the notion that she would be seeing Zero after so long and with hostilities still afire, it was more than a little distracting. Rean was certain he would be able to identify his nemesis as well... "A-ah, coming." She nodded, joining the group endeavor. "But I wouldn't be dismissive of any god. Even if they were made weaker so we can win against them, so can they win against us."

Sae proved herself to be a villain almost right out of the library, and Ben was on her already as one of his aliens. "Let's go, everyone." She nodded at the others in this group before dashing after him, ready to offer help if need to.

Zero, Random House Coincidence

Incidentally, a woman in white was passing by the same house that Rex and Makoto were emerging from. Hm. These weren't nemeses, but maybe she didn't have to kill them right away. In fact, why not use them? The young man was quite cute, too, in this "social loser" kind of way. Time to play the part of a clueless tourist. "Hey, excuse me, you two." She called to the lovebirds. "Think you could give me a hand? I seem to be lost in this stupid city."

If any of them were friends of Two, that would make it even better. As long as they didn't recognize her...

Outside the Library

Shadow Sae had pulled out a small deck of playing cards and was idly shuffling them while she kept her victim in place by the time Ben exited the building again. There was a glimmer of excitement in her unnatural yellow eyes as she tried to persuade him into playing a round despite his now broken rib. The unfamiliar voice yelling at her made her stop and look back, only to receive a chest full of crystal shards. No blood was visible though. She took a step back and away from the man in armor, shocked for a moment. And then she recovered and stared at Diamondhead.

"Oh, did you want to play instead?" she asked as she pulled the shards out one by one. They were covered in a dripping black and red substance that pooled on the floor, but the Shadow didn't seem too upset by it. "You seem like the Fair and Square type. You'd like the Arena battles I run. Too bad I can't bring the experience to you..." He continued to run at her, and she grinned and waited for Ben to get there. Her body pulsed a harsh red color as she used Heat Riser to increase her attack, defense, and general speed. "I will teach you what happens to those that break my rules."

Library

The totally evil lady didn't seem to realize that she was evil, going by how offended she got about Caboose saying the truth. It was always sad to see someone that was so unaware of themselves. But if the evil woman was leaving then it didn't really matter.

Except... if he was getting what other people were saying right, it seemed like she wanted to hurt Makoto! Maybe if he didn't recognize the name it wouldn't have registered as a bad thing, but as it was this was the name of someone who he liked that was nice to him. And also one of Two's friends! Friend of a friend was basically just another friend.

In fact, it sounded like everyone was going to have bad people after them today! Not that Caboose could actually think of any bad people who would want to hurt him, but that clearly meant he just wouldn't have to fight anyone! Too bad that Rean had a good idea of who it was already, though. "Oh, I'm sure it'll be fine!" he told his purple haired friend. "I bet we can take him, Rean." It was just one man, and they had numbers... or something like that.

"And that goes for Zero too!" he remarked to Two quickly, following her out to assist Ben against the emo looking girl.

Bringing up Freckles, the soldier pointed right at Shadow Sae's torso and let loose a well aimed salvo of bullets. "She has some evil looking black blood stuff inside of her. I think we need to help her get it out, Freckles," he told his weapon.

City Streets- Getting a bit Meta

The Meta plodded down the street menacingly, each footstep falling heavily on the pavement. Most of the city dwellers in his path quickly got out of the way, while those that didn't got thrown to the side by a powerful sweep of his arms. Any time he spotted a nemesis actually in combat with someone, he'd quickly pull out his magnum and land a shot in the head. If it couldn't be solved with such a simple maneuver, there was no reason for him to get involved.

He was after Caboose, first and foremost. Actually helping other nemeses before then was pointless, especially against stronger opponents. Unless the nemesis was more than a garden variety punk who was the closest thing some office drone had to a mortal enemy, allying was pointless. His goal was to find Caboose or find a strong ally.

Fighting that sim trooper one on one would invariably result in a win on his part, of that the former freelancer was certain. His training was immaculate and his old friends... teammates praised his skill and strength. But those reds and blues made friends, so it probably wouldn't be a one on one. Allies would be appreciated.

He searched.
