GameXplain just did two more videos on new information about Super Mario Maker 2;

We also get a good look at the Angry Sun in the New Super Mario Bros. U-style and GOOD LORD WHAT DID THEY DO TO YOU?!?! Seriously, this festive pinata thingamabob is supposed to be the Angry Sun?! He looks more like something out of Samba de Amigo!

EDIT: Turns out there's also a third video about a potential Hammer Power-Up;

That Angry Sun looks like the sun from Paper Mario...

That's obviously what I meant.

Anyhoo, we haven't seen the forest theme in SMB3 or the snowy theme in SMW, have we? I'm especially curious about the latter. Will it look like Donut Secret 2, or Awesome?

We saw a glimpse of the SMB 3 forest theme, or at least its nighttime version, right near the start in the bit with the Bowser Jr. mecha. Interestingly, its semi-solids are all mechanical looking. Part of me wonders if it's meant to resemble the pipe mazes from World 7.

As for SMW snowy theme, it'll probably be either Awesome or a new, original theme. Donut Secret 2 is a cave, not an open field.

You did pick up on the fact that I meant it's a colorful Mexican-looking sun like the one from Paper Mario. It also has a very similar color scheme. What else could I have meant? I didn't say they were exactly alike.

Here's a better comparison, though: it looks like something Link would shine the light from his mirror shield on.

I get it.

On the SupperMarioBroth Twitter, they compared it to a Zelda designed Sun...

Mix that and the sun from paper Mario.

I was just playing Super Mario Advance 4 on the Wii U Virtual Console and checking out some of those e-reader levels. There's one with grass from SMB2/USA that you can pluck to get coins, veggies, or poison mushrooms. Why can't there be something like that in Mario Maker? You can choose between small and big turnips, or drag an item or enemy onto it to make it spawn that instead. It'd be a hoot, and could work in any style.

Because Nintendo doesn't give a fuck about veggie version Mario 2.

@Steven: Actually, I get the impression that Nintendo prefers the US Mario 2 to Lost Levels. The former gets a lot of references, while the latter is rarely mentioned. It gave us Birdo, Shy Guys, and Peach's float ability.

Admittedly, Lost Levels has very little to reference, given that it's very much a mission pack sequel. Which I think is why Nintendo prefers the US Mario 2. It might not truly be a Mario game at heart, but that's preferable to it being identical to another game.

That's part of the Mario series' charm, actually-most of the games in it have their own unique gimmicks and aren't just merely updates.

Well there was no real new content in Lost Levels aside from like the Poison Mushroom, which has been added to Mario Maker.

They made it worse in Mario Maker since it will chase you now.

What did Mario Lost Levels give us...?

Fences, actual ground textures, actual bushes and background detail, wind, the poison mushroom...pfff.

The funny thing is, everyone says Super Mario Bros. 2 USA isn't a real Mario game, since it's a reskin of Doki Doki Panic, but Doki Doki Panic itself started life as a Mario project before it was retooled into a collab with Fuji TV.

So in a way, the Mario-skinned version is it returning to its true form.

What references does Mario 2 (not lost levels) get? Aside from those e-reader levels that uses veggies, Wart's cameo in Link's Awakening, and the playable characters in 3D world playing like their Mario 2 counterparts, the game doesn't get that much love. Mario 3 is Nintendo's go to for references.

Mario 3DWorld character roster is basic.

Them having different stats.

Saving inhabitants from a different land.

It also brings back the Character select music.

The doors for some reason.

Cherries.

Rockets.

It's pretty simple stuff.

Also...ya know, the stage in Smash Bros. Which is Mushroom Kingdom 2...apparently.

The bird & Carpet enemy get used in Partners in Time.

The victory theme after beating Wart is in Mario Hoops 3 on 3.

Turnips come back a decent amount, always via plucking.

Luigi's scuttle jump animation.

The main ground theme is in Mario Vs. DK: March of the minis.

Mario Kart 7's Shy Guy Bazaar.

Sticker Star remixes the credits theme.

I don't mind that the poison mushroom chases you because that's actually a cool mechanic that's rarely utilized in Mario. Like, Mario World added the blue and yellow koopas, one of which always walks towards Mario and one that can jump over gaps (I forget which is which), and that was rad, but they never came back in any other game. Would've loved to see them somewhere in the New Super Mario Bros. series.

I gotta say that the poison mushroom's new design is a little overdone, though. It looks like a damn zombie. I would've preferred the classic "purple cap with skull-shaped splotches" look from Mario All-Stars. And making it able to jump seems like overkill too.

It's not a poison shroom, it's a rotten shroom. Hence the Zombie look.

I don't recall there actually being a difference between Blue and Yellow Koopas. Not from red ones anyway.

...

The wiki tells me however...that Blue Koopas are just slower and Yellow Koopas give coins when jumped on.

And Yellow Paratroopas will hop over shells you throw at it.

Well then, I hope those are in SMM 2, with how convenient changing enemies is.

I... could have sworn that there's a color of Koopa that follows Mario, and will turn around if he jumps over it. Am I thinking of a different game?

Yellow Koopas that climb back in their shell become Rainbow Kamikaze Koopas and chase Mario.

Spinny.
