I'm getting the feeling we may have moved well away from the actual topic of the thread at this point...

Fair enough.

So yeah, this probably a bad idea.

According to Nash, Linkara stopped filming the Atop The Fourth Wall film for ten minutes to rant about it.

[up]They'd better have filmed that. I mean, sure, the movie will be most likely be pretty good, but that would be GLORIOUS! I'd paid money to see THAT!grin

Sadly, I don't think they did.

The main problem I had with The Dark Knight Strikes Back (and I had loads of problems with it, but this is the just the biggest one) is that it made the state of the world the result of a big, Lex Luthor headed criminal cabal (which for one thing, had already been done in Kingdom Come) rather than the result of human weakness and general cultural forces. In other words, In The Dark Knight Returns, it's OUR fault. In TDKSB, it's Luthor's fault. You could see a lot of prevailing 80's attitudes in The Dark Knight returns, exaggerated of course, which were held up to be part of what was wrong, but TDKSB had little connection to anything else. The satire may have been an accident, though, as Miller later said his goal was to create a world that needed Batman, rather than to poke fun at society. And I really hated his treatment of Dick Grayson; Miller sounded like he wanted to redeem himself on the Grayson front in All Star Batman and Robin, but we all know what a garbled, meandering mess that turned into....

I liked The Dark Knight Returns a lot the first time I read it, except for its treatment of Superman, but I've liked it less and less on subsequent readings. It's important, certainly, but I no longer count it as a favorite. I think Batman:Year One is brilliant, though.

also the writing and ideas in TDKSA, with a handful of exceptions, are just very poor. there's all this stupid political commentary by talking heads that is boring and has batman take a backseat, dick grayson is a weird joker mutant thing, everyone who doesn't agree with batman is an idiot, wonder woman's description of her courtship with supes is creepy af, braniac is dicking around as lex luthor's underling, etc. it's incredibly dumb.

Also, Superman and Wonder Woman have sex which causes a tsunami and kills thousands of people.

The only good thing about TDKSA is the portrayal of the Question.

Why does Miller hate Superman so much? Given how often Supes has been used as an "AMERICA FUCK YEAH" character (even though he isn't really) you'd think Miller would be all over him.

[up]Because he's not fascistic enough for Miller's hard-right worldview?

Well, Superman does become fascistic at the end of DKSA. Which is where the narrative starts treating him as if he's seen the light at last. So... yeah.

I have to say, however, the scene where Superman finds Lois' medalion is probably one of the most touching Superman scenes ever.

Miller has said he likes Superman quite a lot, and that his portrayal of Superman in The Dark Knight Returns, The Dark Knight Strikes Back, and AS Ba R is filtered through Batman's perception. I think that's a cop out, personally. It does frequently come off as if Miller thinks super heroes ought to be autocratic goons.

[up]Miller subscribes to a far-out brand of right-wing politics that argues that strong men need to take back control of the USA from the evil socialist wimps who run it. In short, that's pretty much exactly what he believes, and that's who he turns each of his lead characters into.

Maybe "The Master Race" means that woman with the swastika pasties will be the main character.

"According to Nash, Linkara stopped filming the Atop The Fourth Wall film for ten minutes to rant about it."

If that's a DVD extra for The Movie, I'm sold.

8 issues, and starts shipping this Fall. We should see issue 8 in 2018.

the only way this will be any good is if azarello just writes the entire thing himself

Can't wait for the part where Batman is drugged into having sex with a dog.

Interesting how the most optimistic take anyone seems to have on this is "might be okay in spite of Frank Miller's involvement".

I'm a bit more optimistic about this, now that I know the original title. Looks like it's not gonna be about Batman killing Superman after all.

Besides, with how many people I respect going SJW, I'm morbidly thankful Frank's coming back for one last hurrah. He's the anti-SJW, and his strain of extremist batshittery isn't going to spread among creative types any time soon.

I am confused: TDKR, TDKSB, TDKSA are three dark knight stories, why is this called TDK III?

Nevermind, I misread the title of TDKSA as TDKSB once somewhere down the line and miscounted.

Well, yeah, that's what happens when you turn into a pseudo-fascist hack and haven't produced a good comic in over a decade.

even disregarding his political views, DKSA and Holy Terror were bad. Bad art, bad dialogue, bad storytelling, bad characterization, etc.

If the entire thing is Ambush Bug riffing on all of Frank Miller's terrible works, I'll buy all of it.
