Why all this hatred for Jeff Loeb? He has brought some pretty great shows on their way….

I would not call much of Marvel Animation's output "great"

[up] I was thinking more along the line of the Live action TV. The issue with the animated shows is more that Marvel is apparently deliberately targeting younger viewers with them. Which could be Loeb's decision, but he might simply follow a directive there.

[up]I believe Ultimatum has something to do with it.

Though that was made during a breakdown over the death of his son, so I suppose it's explainable.

[up][up]Loeb's own comments on animation make it seem like he doesn't have a lot of respect for it as a medium, and it doesn't feel like a directive from Disney as DTVA has been putting out shows written to a broader audience than Marvel Animation has during the same time frame. I mean arguably the best "Marvel" show that's been put out since Avengers:EMH is the DTVA run Big Hero 6.

[up] Disney? I was thinking that it might be a directive by Perlmutter. You know, since he likes his toy sales so much.

What i have seen of Big Hero 6 was also disappointing childish.

[up][up] yeah, DTVA produced stuff, like Wander Over Yonder, Gravity Falls, Ducktales, SV Fo E, Big Hero 6, etc, tend to have higher quality animation and be aimed at a broader audience than most of the Marvel Animation stuff.

Found this interview with one of Marvel Animation's former storyboard artists who had pitched a Captain Marvel show to them (Jessica Drew would have been in it), he talks a bit about the behind-the-scenes troubles too.

Doesn't really sound as if he has that much insight. Basically he did his pitch at a bad moment and he doesn't even know exactly why nothing ever came out of it.

Cut scene from the Alternate Universe Cut, right after Miles runs away from the other Spider-People.

It's a lovely scene, but it was probably cut for being a bit redundant.

Also, can we appreciate Aunt May here? It's not even her Peter, but she's making him go talk to Miles anyway.

Huh I just noticed “childish & disappointing”.

That’s a pretty good way to describe most Marvel Animation productions.

[up][up][up]: I honestly didn't see that coming.

I actually brainstormed an idea that when Deadpool appears in the MCU, he'd make a crack about whether he had to kiss up to Kevin Feige or Amy Pascal to finally have a team-up movie with Spider-Man, but I guess this turn of events puts the kibosh on that happening.

Now if we could get rid of Avi Arad or at least quit making anti-heroes wear the same dark clothes over and over and over again, we'll be set for life in terms of Spidey's cinematic future, I think. evil grin

Does anyone else really like the whole “You’re like me reaction that all the Spider-People have when faced with another Spider-Person?

It’s kinda perfect on a number of levels. On one hand, it works because, despite how different each one is, they are all still Spider-Man. But then it also ties into the idea of diversity and representation. People of African American or Latino decent might be able to have that moment with Miles. Little girls might have that moment with Gwen. I’ve even heard people admit to relating a bit too much with Peter B!

Anyone can wear the mask, and this movie lives that out it in the best way possible.

One scene that was kinda confusing to me, was when Miles first felt his Spidey Sense go off.

It's just so different from any of the other times we see it in the movie, and he even seems to show some sort of minor precognitive abilities.

Miles shines his light into darkness. This is SCARY. A LONG, BLUE TUBE, stamped ALCHEMAX, arcs into the DISTANCE, HUMMING. Miles’ spider-sense continues to direct him. Another surge of SPIDER-SENSE hits Miles and we hear competing thoughts in his head.

MILES (V.O.) Slow down!/What am I doing? What am I doing?

Miles picks up the pace, jogs around the corner, where Miles TURNS, a BIG SURGE OF SPIDER-SENSE and multiple voices are heard together—

MILES Look out./I don’t want to be a hero!/Look out.

MYSTERIOUS VOICE #1 —You’re like me—

MYSTERIOUS VOICE #2 —That’s all it is Miles.—

MYSTERIOUS VOICE #3 —You’re like me—

MYSTERIOUS VOICE #4 —LOOK OUT—

—WHAM!!!!! A SUBWAY CAR flies towards him from the next room and SMASHES AGAINST THE WALL BESIDE HIM!

That's not usually how it works, right?

Mini Miles Morales!

Apparently, after his his mom told him that she would have to wear a suit to an event she was speaking at, he came downstairs with his Spider-Man costume on, since that was his favorite suit. Even Brian Micheal Bendis commented on it!

Older, but since I don’t think it was mentioned here, a thread about the animation of Gwen drumming in her band in her introduction.

I didn’t get much of my #Spider Verse work released online but I did get to animate this Gwen drumming shot SO! here’s a very long thread about less than two seconds of #Into The Spider Verse

Julie Bernier Gosselin was the lead on the sequence and offered the shot since she knew I play drums and would love to animate it. (Side note: Julie is not on Twitter but Twitter should still know her work on #Spider Verse was KEY. Seriously, it’s insane.)

As a drummer myself it was amazing to get to animate this. I also though hey! I can play drums, I can animate, this shouldn’t be too hard!

But then it was. So hard. Animating drumming is SO hard. Ugh. Why did I even like drums in the first place?

Since we were working on 2s w/o motion blur I studied all the 2D animated drumming I could find: from realistic motion and proper drum technique...

...to stylized motion and graphic shapes and tried to mix elements from both.

If you frame through it you’ll see that Gwen is animated on 2s while the camera, her drum kit and her smears are all on 1s —It took a bit of experimentation to get that balance to work.

The smears were made using a mix of multiple drumsticks, multiple arms, geometric shapes and hand drawn lines.

I animated her playing traditional grip (the ‘jazzy’ way to hold the left stick sideways, as opposed to holding both sticks the same way) to subtly mirror her style as a hero: she uses her classical dance background to kick ass and her traditional music training to play punk rock

I shot my own video ref and then studied some great drummers. My main inspiration was Cindy Blackman Santana because 1) she’s also a jazz drummer who plays rock with traditional grip and 2) she just kicks so much butt:

And also gave Gwen an empty paint bucket to keep her drumsticks hoping some othe drummer out there can relate.

Also, some fic recs:

To Have and to Hold Oh great, it’s Liv....

God, this scene is so fucking awesome.

This scene has ascended to the highest tier of my favorite scenes: The kind that are so awesome that it both gives me chill and honest to God make me tear up.

It's that awesome.

Clouds gather. Total coincidence. PUSH IN on a gargoyle near the building's very tippy top. We don't see ANYONE. Until... Lightning REVEALS a CAMOUFLAGED MILES.

QUICK CUTS a hand opening the padlock. The LIGHTS in Peter’s hideout flooding on to REVEAL AUNT MAY sitting in wait, sipping tea.

AUNT MAY Took you long enough.

With each strike, we FLASH to Miles’ journey to get to the top of the building. FLASH! Miles exits the subway. FLASH! Miles approaches the Spider-man suits in the Spidey hideout. FLASH! Miles SPRAY-PAINTS A SUIT.

JEFFERSON (V.O.) I see this spark in you. It’s amazing. Whatever you choose to do with it you’ll be great.

RIO (V.O.) Our family doesn’t run from things.

UNCLE AARON (V.O.) You’re the best of all of us, Miles. You’re on your way. Just keep going.

MILES (V.O.) When do I know I’m Spider-Man?

BACK ON MILES — Moving closer and closer to the edge.

PETER (V.O.) You won’t. That’s all it is, Miles... a leap of faith.

Miles walks to the edge of the roof, the wind buffeting... and LEAPS! The camera is UPSIDE DOWN. Miles isn't falling through frame. He's RISING.

CUT TO Miles SPRAY PAINTING his new uniform.

BACK LIVE, Miles is OUT OF CONTROL, flailing. Miles shoots a web upwards between his legs...The webbing STICKS to a building...

Miles SNAPS on web-shooters as Aunt May watches.

AUNT MAY Made ‘em myself. They fit perfectly.

Miles BEGINS TO SWING. He moves with purpose through New York, slides between taxis, across windows—

He swings up on top of the Brooklyn Bridge and catches his breath. In the distance, we see Fisk Tower. He’s ready.
