I thought this would be the perfect time to talk about this critically panned acclaimed film, cause IT'S POTENTIALLY GETTING A SEQUEL!

Yeah, I know that's outdated, but it could actually happen at any time.

Plus, as a kid born from the late 1990's and grew up with the 90's (in the 00's, ironically) and having seen the film again recently, I wanted to make this thread cause WHY NOT?!

Come on and slam, and express your opinions here!

I kind of agree with Nathan Rabin's assertion that Space Jam isn't a good film, and Looney Tunes Back In Action is infinitely superior.

I honestly wonder why they're even considering a sequel. There's no reason for it and nothing in the first film that left us hankering for more.

I concur. But the film is still good to me, really.

But, there is one about it that sucks: NOT ENOUGH LOONEY TUNES IN IT. About 4/7 of it is live action. Or am I wrong? :S

And about that sequel: They probably want to make it to either cash in with Nike and shit, or just re-introduce the film to a new generation of kids.

Either way, It could be just like Dumb and Dumber To: EXACTLY SIMILAR TO THE FIRST FILM.

The two only things to take away from this movie as an adult now are that Lola is a true mold to Sex Sells, The theme song is catchy as Hell when watching NBA, and Michael Jordan really can't act.(Okay, 3) Really, A long time ago, a similar thread was made and it was said that the recreation of this movie just wouldn't work.

I also don't see where the hell you could even make a sequel with Space Jam. It's not a movie that lends itself to further world building.

LT Bi A a better film? Aldo I take you less serious now then I ever did.

All comments aside, what is your reasoning behind saying that is the better movie? Common consensus is that both are err.

It's simple: the motives behind it aren't crassly commercial, and that's a big plus in my book.

The original Space Jam was kind of dull, but I think the climactic basketball game is entertaining.

I actually want to see this happen, just because of what an unlikely sequel it is. I'm curious as to how it would turn out.

I loved the basketball game itself.

Yeah, the whole thing was a cash grab, but it did it's job of Looney Toons playing basketball.

Back In Action was perfectly fine as well. I have no problem with either movie.

Plus I love this damn song:

The problem with making a new one anyway is that i don't think there's an NBA player in the modern day who's both widely recognized and considered a class act. Lebron's got too much baggage after "the decision," even now that he's returned to Cleveland, imo. Nobody else has nearly that much pull with the mainstream audience.

The movie itself had some good gags, i say.

Back in action is certainly better than Space Jam, but that's not saying much. It's only better due to it having the cartoon characters being more present in the film. Any time it has the live action humans the film is hard to watch because of the actors trying way too hard to ham it up for the camera.

As for Space Jam, 's okay. The B-ball game and the toons themselves are great. Live action stuff is forgetable at best. But that fucking theme song is the best thing from the film(next to the website for the movie still being up). Even better than I believe I can fly(though that song is still pretty good.).

One problem I've heard people say about a potential sequel is that it's going to have a very hard time living up to how great the first movie's soundtrack was.

Other than "I Believe I Can Fly" what other good song does the movie have?

The problem with Back in Action is it felt the Looney Tunes were just going through the motions and repeating the old routines instead of trying to push the envelope with anything new. Even the emotional core between Bugs and Daffy, while better explored than ever before (especially in how Bugs actually cares about Daffy in his own way and stands up for him despite how much of a dick Daffy can be) is basically an expanded rehash of the 'Daffy is jealous of the greater Hollywood star Bugs' routine that already was wearing thin when Chuck Jones left the characters. Other than the museum chase scene, I never felt like I was watching anything but a collection of ideas that were decent, but had already been done to death.

As for Space Jam, it has many more problems, but one of the biggest ones, and the one I never see adressed, is, why should we take the Monstars as a threat for Bugs and the others? Really, why? They are big and dumb? Big-whoopee-doo, Bugs has made a career of handling that type of threat in his sleep. Do they pack nasty space age tech? So what, so does Marvin, and that's never saved him from getting his butt kicked. Yet these big brutes that aren't anything the Looney Tunes haven't handled dozens of times before suddenly force them to run for the hills and for outside help. From (initially, at least) non-powered average humans. Now, LT operate on Rule of Funny, so the Tunes' competence drop would be okay if it at least led to a great comedic payoff, but the best we get is... a joke about Porky wetting himself? Really?

This is why, in the end, the best thing made with the Looney Tunes characters in the past 25 years was Duck Dodgers.

[up]What about "Little Go Beep," or "Invasion of the Bunny Snatchers," or the Mel Blanc CG shorts (Daffy's Rhapsody, I Tawt I Taw a Puddy Tat)?

Invasion of the Bunny Snatchers was rather sucky.

[up]I thought the poorly-animated clones were hilarious (particularly human-mouthed Daffy and the Terry Gilliam-esque Porky at the end), but to each his own.

Doug Walker recently posted a video elaborating on his (and Rob's) thoughts on Space Jam:

The problem with Back in Action is it felt the Looney Tunes were just going through the motions and repeating the old routines instead of trying to push the envelope with anything new.
Watching it with some others online, they said it tried to push in some spy tropes that were funnier when Austin Powers was new, or that it tried to be like The Muppets Movie with the "road trip that runs into celebrities" plot because that's the only idea studios have for "cartoons in the real world" anymore.

I recall that I enjoyed Space Jam at the time. I was, literally, the last person to get a ticket for the showing I saw; they put up the "sold out" sign after me, and even so there were people standing up in the back. The only other times I've seen that happen, where there literally was not a free seat left, were for Ghostbusters and one of the re-releases of Snow White.

That said, I've enjoyed it less on subsequent viewings. I think the Looney Tunes characters work well in their individual milieus, but only a few of them should be brought together at any given time. They're not a repertory company.

Invasion of the Bunny Snatchers was amusing, but, like pretty much everything Looney Tunes related since the 80's, it felt off. The writing wasn't as sharp, and the gags weren't timed well. I think the problem is mostly the writers, as the original Looney Tunes were written much differently than they are now (I know John K would agree with me).

I'll agree, though, that Duck Dodgers was, for the most part, really good.

I haven't seen many episodes of Duck Dodgers (or, for that matter, Taz-Mania and Sylvester & Tweety Mysteries). From what I've seen of those shows, they looked decent enough, but I can't say I'm terribly interested in them. The most interesting episode to me was the one with Porky's nephews (and niece) Porko, Puerco and Sow. I've always thought Tiny Toon Adventures was the best TV show based on the Looney Tunes, though I'm not sure if it counts since the LT characters usually only had supporting roles.

As for Space Jam, I liked it as a kid, but revisiting it I find that it hasn't really held up, for reasons others in this thread (and Doug) have already mentioned. Some of the voice acting was also rather weak (Daffy in particular sounded off - I guess Joe Alaskey was unavailable?)

On a somewhat related note, I recently found a dollar store in my area that still sells merchandise for this movie. I picked up a couple items for the hell of it.

I remember when they had ideas for a Looney Tunes film starring Jackie Chan. I would've totally been on board with that.
