If I remember right, the guy who made the trilogy said that Toho was to blame for how it turned out due to different mandates and orders they put him under. People saw this as him trying to cover his ass and shift blame at the time, but he and many of the other people who worked on the trilogy recently released an animated Gamera miniseries that he had more control over and was generally well received.

Granted, said giant monster isn't usually Godzilla himself. People instead discover the various kaiju that Godzilla ends up fighting.
Detective work in Godzilla movies also boils down to "These aliens are really invaders trying to unleash monsters on us! Why won't you believe me?"

I'm getting a bit annoyed that most new Toho Godzilla films simply reuse the original Showa roars rather than coming up with new variations of it.
I'm really digging the whole "spines jut out, then slam downwards right before Godzilla unleashes the Atomic Breath" thing. It's a really cool visual.

So, the Japanese equivalent of Rotten Tomatoes, Filmarks, just gave Godzilla Minus One very high ranking that actually surpasses both the original film and Shin Godzilla film. And I'm hearing lots of acclaim from western reviewers in ANN too.
