I think they did want to do a faithful dub at first but someone veto'd it. After all they did dub We Are.

Ultimately One Piece was a bad fit for them since even if they were more lenient they probably would have still needed to edit some scenes.
One Piece only started airing unedited when it was on Adult Swim's version of Toonami.

I did and they didn't. The show never took shots at the 80s show. In fact, the show had mythology gags to the 80s show.
I actually watched the show, not just a youtube video about a crossover film.
Incidentally, the film ends with everyone on good terms and like i said, if they showed favoritism towards anyone, it was towards the Mirage Turtles, the original versions. Even then the Mirage Turtles admit that they dug the belt buckles with the initials that the 80s toons Turtles have.

The show was fine, it's the crossover that's the issue. Turtles Forever exaggerated what the '87 show was like for comedy, which is why we had weird stuff like mutant bananas.
But in general, people aren't as fond as they used to be at the whole "oh, this old nostalgic property was cheesy" thing as they used to be. People still complain about the yellow spandex line from the first x-men movie to this day.
And even then you had Bebop and Rocksteady essentially save the day, which i remember people being surprised by that since Peter Laird(Co-Creator of the TMNT) was allegedly not particularly fond of them.
Could be wrong, but didn’t Shaman King also get them in hot water because they were more lenient on it compared to other dubs? I know it almost got an uncut dub, too.

"Let’s see who’s stronger: someone that has something to protect, or someone that has nothing to lose."It was because they didn't Censor Hao Asakura beating the Shit out of Yoh on screen that got them in hot water, as well as not censoring the Christain imagery of the X-laws.
Watch SymphogearIf that's what people were upset about, clearly they missed the part about Jesus being a previous Shaman King. When you have such a blasphemous premise, the rest is inevitable. I'm surprised 4Kids dubbed it in the first place.
I also remember they were lenient with the Ultimate Muscle dub.
J's Reviews has been doing a retrospective of the TMNT 2k3 series. People have been discussing the videos over at the TMNT thread in the western animation section.
Barring the utterly awful Mirabelle Haywood aka Seeno Aiko the Doremi dub was awesome. And it premiered the same day as the Naruto dub did.

Youtube host Saberspark looks at the rise and fall of 4kids, as well as pointing out how important it was in anime becoming more mainstream in the west.
There's a new podcast called 4kids Flashback hosted by Tara Sands and Steve Yurko.
The first episode is an interview with Michael Haigney, among they things they talk about is how the infamous Jelly Doughnut came about.
The latest episode of the podcast has an interview with Eric Stuart, the voice of Brock and Kaiba.
What's interesting is how the One Piece 4Kids dub has no fandom at all. Lots of people love Joey Wheeler's dumb accent and Yugi characters being sent to the Shadow Realm, but zero people are nostalgic for Sanji's lollipop or Usopp's rubber knife.
People do have some nostalgia for some of the voice actors. Not the writing, though.
There are people that have fond memories of everything else 4kids did, from Ultimate Muscle to even Funky Cops, but their One Piece dub seems to be the exception.
Everyone has their stinkers.
I only heard about the One Piece 4 Kids dub by reputation. Like apparently the rap is infamous.
Which is a weird one because 4Kids usually delivers on the music quality for openings.

I'll teach you a lesson about just how cruel the world can be. That's my job, as an adult.I do think it's probably not helped by the performances being not as iconic to people like Dan green as Yugi and eric Stuart as Kaiba.
"That's right mortal. By channeling my divine rage into power, I have forged a new instrument in which to destroy you."Yeah, we'll at least remember 4Kids more for making Anime more mainstream and introducing it to kids, than the One Piece rap.
No, I'm not listening to that song, none of you all can make me.
I'll teach you a lesson about just how cruel the world can be. That's my job, as an adult. One Piece Rap has been Vindicated by History pretty hard.
Why?
I'll teach you a lesson about just how cruel the world can be. That's my job, as an adult.
I wonder what would’ve happened if they went into their One Piece dub with the same standards as TMNT 2003 i.e. pushing the limits for what was appropriate.
