Ars Technica: NYT defeats Ajit Pai as judge orders FCC to provide net neutrality records

The New York Times has won its lawsuit against the Federal Communications Commission, as a federal judge ruled Thursday that the FCC must turn over net neutrality comment records that it refused to give to the NYT.

The NYT sued the FCC in September 2018, saying the agency denied a Freedom of Information Act (FoIA) request for records that the NYT said might shed light on possible Russian interference in the net neutrality repeal proceeding. The Times' motion for summary judgment was granted by Judge Lorna Schofield of the US District Court for the Southern District of New York.

The FCC must turn over IP address and user-agent headers of their commenters for the investigation to determine if they were made by bots.

It's been over a year since that last post. In the time that has passed since then, Trump lost the presidential election to Joe Biden, and Biden is now president... Do we even HAVE a new chairperson in the FCC? Or is Ajit still there?

For the record, turns out most of the comments opposed to net neutrality were fraudulent, and funded by ISPs.

They were using real people's names and identities obtained from unrelated marketing campaigns and posting comments in their name.

That doesn't answer my question: Is Ajit Pai still chairman of the FCC? Or is someone else in the role now?

UPDATE: Oh wait...he isn't. The role of FCC Chairperson has now been assumed by one Jessica Rosenworcel.

Oh, and there's a vacancy in the FCC, which should be filled soon.

Pressure builds on Biden, Democrats to revive net neutrality rules: "The party is under pressure to deliver on its past promises to restore open-Internet protections, but doing so — at least at first — may not be easy"

Seems like the Democrats want to move ahead on this issue, but not much will happen until they appoint a third democrat to the commission.

Consider my second-to-most-recent post on this forum.

The FCC needs a new member. It will likely be a Democrat.

... who is "they"? As shocking as it might seem, the major US parties are not the same.

Also, big corporations on either side of the argument.

Because Biden wanted it to happen and they've only been able to stall for three years.

Also, de facto it's been the case even after Pai trashed it, because everyone had to play by California's rules or else suffer impossible logistical challenges.

I despise hypocrisy, unless of course it is my own.

[up][up][up] Net Neutrality is a Net Positive for people on the Internet, as ISP's are no longer allowed to Throttle people and slow down connections on customers.

Was that stuff in California related to the incident where a fire department lost their data connection while putting out a fire?
