I think its him generally going faster which just boots the victim in half rather than just Mavado trampling on them and casually digging their guts out with his feet.

At least it actually looks like his old MKDA fatality compared to Frost tho.

Impromptu survey here: does MK1 Nitara qualify as The Scrappy? I previously added an entry about her as such because it seems opinions about her have been pretty tepid-to-negative (most common criticisms being her distractingly bad vocal performance, bland dialogue, and mediocre gameplay), but it got removed over a week later because "A character has to be hated for narrative reasons to be considered a Scrappy".

I personally think she is very unmemorable and her inclusion in the game is a lot more glaring than if she wasn't in it (granted, I have seen some fraction of folks who do like her gameplay style in concept, but even they acknowledge it's probably still low-tier), and that she otherwise doesn't really add anything to the narrative, but what do yall think? Does is she narratively good enough to evade Scrappy territory?

From everything i've seen

Most people problem is Fox's VA work

Most people love her redesign

Most people don't have issues with the Lore changes

its just they'll say they should have ditched Fox and just let Cristina Vee do the voice since Vee's already doing all the screams and grunts

Plus, wouldn't most of the characters in the new timeline be considered "X Character In Name Only?"

Scorpion is definitely a case in name only

He may be Scorpion In Name Only, but his badass scene in MK 1 still gets me:

• After possibly hours of exhaustion escapes his captors singlehandedly, hit his brother so hard it knocked him out of the fight for several minutes, and while still handcuffed proceeded to defeat several guards, two of which he crushed their skulls
• after which he disarmed SHAO EFFING KAHN and NEARLY STRANGLED HIM TO DEATH while STILL HANDCUFFED
• beats him and Shang Tsung at the same time until Shang decides to fend him off with a few soldiers from the army Shang had just promised Bi-Han would help them win a war against Earthrealm.
• beat Darrius and Havik at the same time with no damage
• and then and only then did Bi Han catch up and manage to cut him with a knife - and then Kuai Liang beat him again with no help from Smoke after getting his eye slashed by a sneak attack''

Why Liu Kang recruit Raiden instead of Kuai Liang for Mortal Kombat, I will never know.

like alot of his issues in MK 1 you could argue is cause Liu took made the wrong decisions/ let his personal bias get the better of him

He purposefully kept Raiden around to make him his champion

Why the everloving FUCK is Mortal Kombat not popular at all in Japan? There are a lot of Pixiv artists addicted to Gorn in the site — and the Netherrealm games have levels of gore equal to gore levels that're still present in certain anime and manga series. I blame CERO.

Supposedly, it is because of the guidelines that there weren't any new MK games localized there after the Super Famicom port of MK2 (even then, though, only MK11 has been outright banned from purchase, sale, transport, and ownership there, AFAIK; you can legally import the rest of the series in Japan if you want to), though John Tobias claims MK just wasn't that popular there to begin with and blames the "very americanized" character designs for that.

Gorn or no, Japan generally seems to prefer its domestic games, and doesn't much care for most games that largely appeal to Americans, including MK. On the rare occasions where they fall in love with foreign games (like with Crash Bandicoot or Ghost of Tsushima), it's because those games did things that appealed to them quite a bit (e.g. the cute and cartoony character design of Crash being coupled with some damned good gameplay, or the everything about Tsushima).

I love how his Ice Slide is directly contrasted by Kuai Liang and Smoke in the background, jogging normally and reaching the wall at the exact same time as Bi-Han. Like. He didn't even go any faster. He's sliding at brisk jogging pace.

Actually, MK games did get released in Japan up to Trilogy. MK3's Playstation port's Japanese release was basically helmed by Sony Japan as part of the huge marketing push MK 3 got, and it sports unique intro screen, bio and ending screen narrations by none other than Mugihito.

Last I checked though, I think MK 9 and X were banned in Japan along with MK 12 due to the more realistic violence against human characters. CERO are strict about dismemberment of any kind against humans no matter how stylized. It's why most DBZ games up to Kakarot had a two-armed Future Gohan and only recently has he been depicted as losing that arm eventually.

Although the weird handling of Japanese characters and themes don't help. And yet MK has a pretty decent cult following there among fans who get around the bans in some fashion, and draw fanart of the characters. One twitter user I follow is a big fan of Erron Black. So its not like its universally hated there from what I can see. There was also another Japanese artist from way back who drew fanart of the characters from around MK 4 or Deadly Alliance's time (though they drew Cyrax as white so I dunno.)

Finally, the older MK films had Japanese audio tracks, and the 2021 film still got a theatrical release ther (albeit likely due to it starring Hiroyuki Sanada and Tadanobu Asano.)

And finally finally the series got outright shown off in Hi Score Girl so they definitely know.

EDIT 2: I'm guessing this was a teaser cause that... was definitely shorter than the last few character reveals. Basically no gameplay to show off his moves. At least we got to see Ferra... as a teenager?

From what we could hear, the voice isn't too bad a replacement for Starr. I'll probably wait to pass judgment until we get more though.

Can't wait for the inevitable All Fatalities on Homelander video.

For a first look video it's kinda lame. We don't get much outside of the fatalities and milk drinking winning animation. It also ends wayyy too abruptly. It just ends after Liu Kang gets hit with the airplane. Hope the actual character trailer has a segment between him and Omni-Man.
