[up][up] This is true. I default to 6 a lot of the time since it's the first one I really got to playing.

Just picked up Tekken 7 on PS4 since it's currently stupid- cheap on the Playstation Store note .

Most of my recent fighting gaming has been Mortal Kombat 11, though, which I know is a very different kind of game, and I've only played a little Tekken before.

Any tips I should know for getting started? I've just putzed around in Arcade and Practice modes so far.

Lucky Chloe is really good for newcomers to get used to the overall mechanics due to her ease of use.

Really? I wouldn't have thought so after seeing her trope page mention how her attacks work best when done rhythmically, though I suppose that's good for breaking any button mashing habits.

Don't be shy or embarrassed to hop into online fights as soon as you get just a little bit comfortable with your preferred character. In fact, I absolutely recommend hopping onto Versus Mode as soon as you have the basic mechanics of the game down. Versus Mode will teach you far more about the game than the cheating bastard AI ever will.

[up] I've learned that with MK. The tricky part now becomes finding my preferred character. I tend to like the agile types most, though with MK I've grown fond of mid-range type fighters. Not sure if there's anything like that in Tekken, though.

I thought Katarina was supposed to be the easy to use character. She's got combos hooked up to basic single button mashing.

Josie, Katarina, Lili, and Noctis are some of the fighters who I'd argue have a lower skill floor compared to others. Paul, Claudio, Dragunov, and Asuka I'd probably also throw into the ring.

Kazumi shouldn't be overlooked either with her fundamentals.

I tried Katarina & Julia out in a couple rounds of Arcade mode. Both went well and I see what you mean about Katarina being a Skill Gate Character. Maybe a little too easy for me to use, since I can at least handle basic combos, if not the insane, one string = 30%+ health juggle combos.

I personally would recommend Paul, but that's mostly because he plays like a Soul Calibur character

Don't take my word for it, I could never really get into Tekken because of the major skill gap.

The thing that always discourages was how I could never pull off a God Fist since Devil Jin was my main.

Fighting games tend to be the genre that's hardest to get into because of that learning curve.

I was lucky in that my entrance into the game was pretty smooth since the game was extremely popular in the arcades back when I was in high school, and I would spend a few hours after school playing in the arcade with other students. I first started playing with Tag, but didn't really get into the nitty-gritty of learning the deeper mechanics of the game until BR. The fact that there were a lot of people willing to walk me through the game and teach me really went a long way in boosting my skills in the game than if I were to try learning it on my own.

I haven't played the game in a while, though, so I'm pretty sure my skills have degraded. Not that I had that much in the first place, since I've only ever hovered between Suzaku and Revered Ruler at the highest.

I have a friend that played against a Tekken God and won 3 out of 5 matches. According to him it's just about learning the most basic fundamentals, pick a character you really really like, and just practice and stay creative.

I do remember getting to fight one of my country’s best players who was in the area at the time, and the pride I got at being able to take a round out of him instead of just being completely smashed into a Feng-sized shape on the floor in 3 rounds was something else. I only got to play one match, though, since everyone there wanted to have a go at playing with him.

That “stay creative” point is also really important. Know your character’s mixups, their 50/50s and really practice how to be as unpredictable as possible; don’t pigeonhole yourself into a predictable pattern.

The game not having a detailed and instructive tutorial does hinder the newer players who aren’t familiar with Tekken or fighting games in general.

Which is strange considering the loading screens are full of gameplay tips that aren’t integrated in one source in game for some reason.

So yeah, you’ll definitely have to put in the time and effort and that’s really all fighting games since the learning curve is at a higher threshold. Tekken is big now so it has the advantage of continued developer support and a vibrant community.

Blame Harada and him not wanting to have proper tutorials.

As far I know, I still haven't found any fighting game that helps people get a really good idea of how said game functions.

For all the potshots people take at NRS, their games are the 1st that actually talks about frame data at the very least.

[up]I felt like Guilty Gear Xrd did a good job, or Rev 2 do did anyway, which was the edition I played. It had a tutorial that walked you through the game's base mechanics like roman cancels, and taught you how to the different properties to attacks, like overheads and stuff.

Go figure, the I skipped on the PS 3 & GG is now more accessible than it was before.

Makes me wonder why GG's tutorial is so well done but not Fighterz? I guess it has to do with being 1st game in the series.

My roommate and I played some games, trying some random characters, and of the ones I got I'm liking Eddy. I like how he's manic and all over the place with his movement. I may play with him a little more see how he feels.
