Ukraine protests: Thousands march through capital- over 100,000 by some counts
Ukrainian protesters besiege government building
Clashes amid huge Ukraine protest against U-turn on EU
Over 300,000 defy protest ban in Ukraine- "Fierce clashes erupt after protesters take to streets again, chanting "revolution" as anger against government grows."
What started as a protest against the decision not to sign an agreement with the EU seems to have escalated into a "Color Revolution" or "Arab Spring" style movement to force the government to resign. By some reports, the police are using violent tactics to suppress the street protests.
The Western half of the Ukraine has historically felt closer to Europe , and wants to move Ukrainian society in that direction. Eastern Ukraine feels culturally closer to Russia, and favors closer relations with that country. The current regime of President Viktor Yanukovich is part of that camp. The current confrontations can be seen as a clash between these two halves of Ukrainian society.
EDIT (2/24/2022)
This thread was originally opened in 2013 during the beginning of the revolt in Ukraine that eventually over-threw the dictatorship of the Yanukovyich regime and instituted democratic elections soon afterward. As of this writing, in the aftermath of the Russian invasion that began on 2/23, it is not clear whether or for how long Ukraine will continue to exist as an independent country.
Statements made nine years ago still seem relevant: "The Western half of the Ukraine has historically felt closer to Europe , and wants to move Ukrainian society in that direction. Eastern Ukraine feels culturally closer to Russia, and favors closer relations with that country... The current confrontations can be seen as a clash between these two halves of Ukrainian society." Some people have expressed the view that the confrontation between Russia and Ukraine, beginning in 2014, never really ended.
The invasion is also a result of certain grievances proclaimed by Vladimir Putin, the current President of Russia, and used by him as justification for armed attack and occupation. Western governments, and others around the world, have joined together in condemnation of this attack.
While we do not know what the ultimate outcome of these events will be, this thread will continue to be made available as a place to record news, ask questions and express opinions about the "Crisis in Ukraine."
This map will help track the latest developments.
Do not post anything about the Ukrainian military movement and strategy. This could actually result in casualties.
No discussion regarding nuclear war. As nuclear weapons are not being used by either side, nuclear war is off-topic.

Their last chance to grab territory.
I think there’s a global conspiracy to see who can get the most clicks on the worst liesThat depends. But we will see relatively soon.
"1) In Ukrainian statements.
2) 'That the Russian Army is ordered to take some city by some date (9 May, elections, etc...)'"
...That's just repeating yourself without adding anything new. This does not clarify anything. Where are these statements being made, who's making them, has anything been brought forth as a basis for them, has any other reputable sources put forth counter-arguments against them, etc?
Trans rights are human rights. TV Tropes is not a place for bigotry, cruelty, or dickishness, no matter who or their position.1) The last one mentioned was made by Syrskyi about a month ago about Chasiv Yar and 9 May. He did not mention sources, iirc.
2) Everything else was my not very humble opinion. If you are not interested in that, I don't think there is much point in discussing this further.
1) O.K, that’s better, really! I can actually put a name and date to that statement. That’s not as maddeningly vague anymore. I don’t know who Syrski is but that’s at least something I can look up and find out more.
2) I don’t recall mentioning anything about your opinion. I only asked for clarification of where these claims came from because I had never heard of the sort about Russia or from Ukraine.

Looks like Russian vehicles deployed to Kharkiv have a new logo on their vehicles.
Russian Offensive Campaign Assessment, May 11, 2024
- Russian offensive in Kharkiv continues. Considering the size of Russian forces, this is likely not a large operation.
- ISW continues to believe that the goal is to draw Ukrainian forces to the area to make advances elsewhere and to advance within artillery range of the city.
- Another goal, maybe to create a buffer zone between front and Belgorod.
- Ukraine attacked an oil refinery in Belgorod.
- Russia advanced in Kharkiv Oblast. Near Svatove, Chasiv Yar, Avdiivka and Donetsk City. In western Zaporizhia Oblast and east bank Kherson Oblast.

- Russian defence minister Shoigu was replaced with Adrei Belousov. Shoigu was moved to national security council.
- Ukraine continues strikes in Russia.
- Some german politicians expressed support for using NATO air defence stationed in NATO states to shoot down Russian drones over western Ukraine.
- Russia advanced in Kharkiv.
Been hearing that Ukraine sacked whoever was responsible for the defence on the Kharkiv line, b/c they were obviously unprepared.

How serious is the Russian attack on Kharkiv so far?
Echoing hymn of my fellow passerine | Art blog (under construction)Only hearing that some border towns were taken after the Kharkiv offensive started.
10 villages taken. About the same amount as the Ukrainian counteroffensive last year. Although a bit faster…
So far Russian army hasn't reached Ukrainian static defensive positions. As for offensive itself it is pretty much the same - RU forces use their superiority in numbers of men and equipment to gain some territory at the cost of both men and equipment. After all, Ukraine now is at the lowest in Soviet stuff, and EU only seriously started ramping up production relatively recently.
Though from what I heard, Ukraine moved up units up north and is using drones to ambush and force Russian troops to stop their advance.
They can now afford to start shooting more frequently, and committing more equipment, knowing that resupply is coming.

Ohh, good old Sergey has been moved... He'll be missed, his operating procedure began to be rather predictable: send meat to be slaughtered, ask for more.
Well, "normally" you don't change horses when the race is going well, or an idiom accordingly, so this demotion/promotion makes one wonder. Is the new guy so hot that he deserved to take the main role, or are the politicals starting to notice things aren't going well?
Some say making an economist Minister of Defence indicates gearing up for the long war. And of course, many had various complaints about Shoigu. (But I doubt he had much imput on tactics. He has no military background either, and it is not a role Minister of Defence normally plays anyway.)
They are.

Reports from the UK are mentioning a lot of usage for the Chinese Desertcross 1000-3. Some reports from Moscow mention formation of units that use the DC with AT-4 Spigots.

Well, you could argue that the war effort rests more on Nabiullina and Siluanov's shoulders than on any number of uniformed MoD goons.
