Speaking of, the last set of episodes aren't in English just yet, but have been released elsewhere. Suffice to say, it'd be nice if anybody who wants to comment on them at least spoiler marks them on the forum till it premieres in the US(at the bare minimum. I don't know if anybody else lives in other areas of the world and would like it spoiler-marked for longer).

I don't think we have a hard rule on this, though.

So! "The Summer Sun Setback".

I can't quite shake the feeling that Grogar knows more about his minions' plots than he lets on.

I get where Luna and Celestia are coming from, but somehow I don't think that a beloved, millennium-old celebration is quite as easy to let go of as they're making out. I mean, it'd be like saying that since we don't follow Celtic paganism anymore we're going to stop celebrating Halloween. The Summer Sun Celebration has by all appearances been one of Equestria's most popular and important holidays since its creation — the fact that it hinges upon the princesses participating would definitely make it easy for them to stop it, but I doubt it would be the most popular way for Twilight to start her career.

Then again, as this episode itself points out, ponies will completely rearrange their worldviews and careers because a random passerby told them to, so willpower in the face of something resembling authority may not be their strongest suit.

Hmm. So Twilight doesn't do the hyperfocusing, lists or nervous breaks anymore... remind me again, how many character traits does she have left by now? The sarcastic and arrogant side's been gone for seasons, she hasn't done her scientist shtick for nearly as long and even her passion for magic's been fading out of focus.

I honestly wouldn't be so upset about her leaving her more neurotic traits behind if it didn't seem like she also shed every trait that didn't directly relate to friendship in some way.

I've seen a lot of people comment that Cozy's "silly sun holiday" comment implies her being from outside Equestria, but it's honestly entirely consistent with somebody grown entirely contemptuous of her own culture. You don't have to be from outside a given culture or nation to find its traditions stupid.

That, of course, raises the question of how a preteen kid got to be this cynical.

Pegasi storing clouds, rainbows and to a degree even wind in barrels I get. If nothing else, at least two of those are well-established to be actual and physical substances in the show's world, and with how much the show likes to dip into Greek myth it could just be a smaller-scale version of Aeolus giving Odysseus all the winds of the world in a bag. But how do you store sunshine inside a barrel?

Oooh. That's a very pretty unicorn design.

You know, between Chrysalis' unicorn master race spiel and Tirek now absorbing "life force" instead of magic, I think that the show is really trying to push the idea of unicorns being the only type of ponies with magic. Which I really don't buy. I mean, if one group of creatures is universally capable of flight, can stand on clouds, can create and control wind, rain, snow and lightning and lives in literal floating cloud cities with liquid rainbows waterfalling off their sides, and another group can for the most part just pick up small objects and make colored lights... yeah, I know which I would call more magical.tongue

Rarity! Please inform her highness that we will not be performing! A simple fireworks show is beneath us! We're better than that!

... so what do you plan on doing instead, exactly?

I gotta give this to Dash — I did not think anybody could possibly have a worse poker face than Applejack does, and yet here we are! I. guess it's true what they say about Rainbow never settling for anything but first place.

Hmm. I think that this is the first time Rainbow's rainbow trails have been treated as something that actually physically exists in-universe. They were previously just very fancy motion blur, really, but now they seem to be some physical substance that she actually projects behind here as she flies.

Hey now, this must be the first time that Twilight raised the sun unaided.

A brand new holiday? You're my kinda princess!

I mean. It's basically the same thing as before with a new name. I don't know if I'd call it a new holiday per se.

For all my bellyaching, I did enjoy this episode. The visuals were very pretty, the jokes were good, the story itself nice and solid, and the Big Bad Bunch as great as ever. It didn't really do anything wrong outside of some general trends I'm unhappy with — apart from some misgivings with how Twilight's character has evolved over the course of the show resurfacing, I did quite like this.

[up][up]I had the same hunch about Grogar being on to the Super Friends. Maybe he will reveal to have known all along, and this was all a huge Batman Gambit to get the Super Friends to steal the manual for him without even realizing, as some sort of test.

And yes, Cozy's precocious cynicism is probably the biggest problem with her character. Where in Equestria did that come from? Then again, we've already established how terrible Equestria is at providing care, parental, educational, or professional, to children. Child neglect/abuse is pretty much the primary cause of villainy amongst ponies in Equestria at this point.

[up] Spoilers, man. Come on, now. You know the show isn't out worldwide as is. Even then, we're really supposed to spoiler mark it for a week, but we've admittedly not done that... for US releases, at least. It's not premiered in the US, though, so could you keep it spoilered till they premiere here?

I definitely read something I did not want to know. And I even turned off "Show Spoilers" so I could avoid this issue. I want to be surprised. Like, the small thing you mentioned was more obvious than Twilight having obsession issues, but that's not the point.

I wonder if this is what it was like during the U.S. hiatus of the last season of Avatar: The Last Airbender?

Funny thing is I spoiled myself on “Between Dark and Dawn” because the title made me nervous. And then I didn’t get to watch it until a a week or two ago, and didn’t care all that much.

I’m just going to drop this here.[lol]

This thread tends to talk about the US releases immediately via their reactions. So once the US release is there, spoilers off feels fair. Most threads wait two weeks. In this case, following the culture of this one, it makes sense to keep 'em spoiler marked till the US release as is.

That's my suggestion though. We still have the official rule of spoiler marking it until two weeks after the US release, but as I said, the thread is weird and never followed that. No reason we can't at least spoiler mark anything from the Dutch-released episodes, though. Well, till the US release, I mean.

Official forum rules about spoilers are that something like a TV has to air in English and be under spoiler tags for a week before it becomes fair game.

However, you can mark a thread as "Live reactions" (as I did) in which case it is ok to comment without spoiler tags as soon as an episode airs. Presumably, that only applies to the English airing though, but there is no one week spoiler period here once an episode does officially air.

but as I said, the thread is weird and never followed that.

The official spoiler policy is that a thread can opt out as long as you mark it in the title.

Just to be clear, I am NOT giving spoilers. I have seen nothing beyond the last episode I discussed here. Everything I say about future episodes is pure speculation on my part based on previous episodes and the trailer we saw a few weeks ago.

If I have managed to guess certain aspects of the finale, that would be purely based on what everyone here has already seen.

Post of the Day #2619

On another note has anyone been to cinema and had people start cheering or reacting loudly? I haven't but I hear stories of it happening all the time and I'm glad I've never encountered it. I've never had it happen in a real movie theater, but I've defintiely seen it in somewhat more informal showings. I remember when I watched Independence Day, people cheered whenever Will Smith did anything.

Next week on Dr. Hooflittle: Fluttershy gets a potion that enables her to talk to animals after falling out with Angel.

Wait, couldn't Fluttershy already understand what animals are saying? She seems to have understood them perfectly fine in plenty of other episodes.

Also, Angel is upset, what else is new? grin
