I don't really think "its just a toy promotional thing" is a good reason to dislike any particular developments. You do know what show we're watching, right? The entire point is to hock toys. As long as the writers have enough room to make it interesting it should be fine.
So like I said earlier: Am I the only one who thought Rarity letting Coco design the costumes for the musical ment that she was going to help Rarity and that her coming back to Ponyville was a Flash Forward?

I hope it's a super mode, not a permant change, cuase... god those desighns just look bad. The rainbow highlights, might work but those stupid stickers and glitter all over their hooves....
I'm sure the implementation will be fine, it's just the look I don't like.
Also, this just adds to what I've been saying that Twilacorn wasn't a Hasbro thing but WAS something the writers came up with. Since one more we are having something that is undeniably a result of Executive meddling forcing toys into the show, and it's being pushed long, long before even a hint of it shows up IN the show. While all Twilacorn got for official toy push a press release about a few upcoming toys a few weeks before it aired.

I've had cheesesteak Hot Pockets. They're actually superior to the nauseating things my aunt gave me. I'd never had a Philly cheesesteak before or since, so I don't know how hers compare on the "Glurk Scale". Maybe others aren't all that bad.

Existence Weighed Against Nonbeing
Again, I don't see the designs as that bad; we really shouldn't use the promotional material as a metric of what the show is going to be like. The marketing department and show creation are nearly completely separate. My guess is that the "executive meddling" was something along the lines of "We want a rainbow-themed set of ponies. Can you work that into the show somehow?" type of deal. There probably was a corporate push, but according the writers, they have a lot of freedom in how they apply the requests.
