How the hell did he get guns and body armor in New Zealand? Also, he apparently did this to influence US politics (and because of the US's influence, worldwide politics) and cause more polarization, even though the US doesn't really give a shit about foreign countries and New Zealand isn't even an important foreign country like France, Germany or the UK are.

There's always a black market for weapons and many ways to get the equipment together, if you're dedicated enough.

From what other sources reporting on this are saying he wasn't the only terrorist. There was atleast 3 others that worked along with him. 2 men and 1 woman.

Although that cannot be confirmed quite yet as the story is ongoing. The only thing that can be confirmed is this piece of shit was so far gone he recorded what he was doing and made a 8chan post about it. He also said Pewds was his inspiration.

New Zealand is a critical ally and has a surprisingly large amount of influence with the US government. I can see someone thinking that events there would influence the US.

That said, this is absolutely disgusting. I’m disappointed to see this being reported on as a mass shooting rather than a terrorist attack, though that’s to be expected.

I’ll also add that weapons and body armor aren’t heavily restricted in New Zealand, though that may change after this.

@CookingCat: Polarisation works both ways. IS clearly states in their own propaganda material that one of their goals is to eliminate peaceful coexistence between Muslims and non-Muslims. Those decapitation videos? They're made specifically to play up the "foreign barbarian" factor for a Western audience and make the Muslim/Middle Eastern world seem impossible to reason with, which in turn would drive up untethered militarism by the Western powers and isolate minority Muslim communities from their non-Muslim compatriots.

The same thing's happening here. The goal is to scare minority Muslims into thinking that they can't trust their neighbours, which in the long term would drive more of them into extremism and provide a pretext for the alt-right to go "Deus Vult". Radical Islam and white nationalism are basically symbiotic, and have been that way for quite a while now.

And some asshole senator in Queensland called Fraser Anning is blaming Muslims for this...

Eh, not his first time. Anti-immigration sentiment is getting hella normalised in Oz; I think I got off light growing up because my family looks more East Asian than "Muslim", but we've still got people like Blair Cottrell going mainstream and Antipodean Resistance posters showing up left and right.

Anyway, the process feeds back to the Muslim-majority world too. When the invasion of Iraq kicked off, thousands of fringe backwater imams in places like Pakistan, Indonesia, Bangladesh, Nigeria and Tunisia suddenly had an ideological platform to run huge protests and scam-laden prayer congregations on.

Some of their flock would run off to join Abu Sayyaf, Jemaah Islamiyah or whichever weirdo IS spin-off is closest to them. Most would vent out by harassing their local minorities: not just Christians, Buddhists or indigenous animists, but non-mainstream Muslim denominations like Ahmadis as well. Actual attacks on "Western" targets, like the USS Cole bombing or the 2002 Bali bombing, are rare. Most of the time it manifests in churches burned down, liberal bloggers hacked to death by mobs, and politicians endorsing regressive laws to placate increasingly mainstream hardline Islamist sentiments.

The Christchurch attacker seems to have used a shotgun and an AR-15 style semi-auto (with a drum magazine) in the attack. The latter falls under an "E" category licence, which requires a clean personal record, a series of exams, a home inspection by LEOs to check the adequacy of your storage facility, and personal references from at least two people. Will be waiting to see if they identify a loophole in the law.

From the screenshots I've seen (I don't think I could stomach the whole video) The shooter's gun was covered in numbers and slogans. The only one I could make out clearly was "1571", which a google search tells me is the year of a decisive naval victory by christian forces over the ottoman empire (the Battle of Lepanto)

I think that tells you a lot about this guy and the circles he moves in.

Also, as an aside - Fuck Fraser Anning. Seriously.

Got in touch with my Bio teacher from high school who's moved back to the city. Her neighbour is on the operating table for multiple gunshot wounds.

Not much use when they can use TOR or other proxy systems to get past it. Still, it's something at least.

4chan is still tolerable. 8chan was founded by a white nationalist sympathiser - which is why every time shit like this happens, I immediately hop there to see if someone knew something about it prior to it happening. Sadly, they usually do - mostly because the fuckwads who do this kind of shit go there to yap about it before doing it.

Shouldn't police departments and such try to track people's activities there, if that's the case? I mean, it happened more than once, now.

Remember, the worst attack of this kind beforehand happened in Sweden of all places.

It just doesn't matter where you are, nothing can protect your from people who are dedicated to ruin as many lives as possible.

And I wager plenty of people in New Zealand probably didn't know what 8chan was until today - that includes their intelligence and investigative services. Heck, their Police Chief pretty much said that none of those punks who did this were on any watch-list.

It's kind of the problem with that thing. FBI probably watches it, along with a handful of others. Places like New Zealand or Sweden? They won't even know it's a thing until it's too late.

Doesn't 8chan also have a history with pedophilia? Seems like that place should be on at least one watchlist somewhere.

It was blacklisted from Google because of this (and other things) and has been investigated by the American federal authorities in the past.

Of course, since it's mostly a haven for violent far-rightists, the federal authorities did nothing.

This is a horrific nightmare and another sign that hate culture on the net has gone from being a joke to a major force for evil.

Yeah the manifesto is definitely a ploy to make journalists look stupid. It's 90% "hacker named 4chan" bullshit and 10% white genocide conspiracy theories. He literally put the Navy SEALS copypasta in there and cited Fortnite as an influence.
