Man, I still remember as a kid who discovered Earthbound through a rom and Melee, hanging out in Starman.net.

I wonder if Radiation still has that blog of how he made the Halloween hack.

I still recall he wanted to write a non-stereotypical homosexual and that he wanted to stand out a bit and not just be the DJ.

if you see this earthbound hack you can see some stuff that linger on undertale like "do you really have to kill?" like there is a monster he wont atack you and instead he will guilt trip you over and over until it dies.

You can see all that in his later games.

Yeah like I said, while Toby regrets the Halloween hack because a LOT of things have aged badly, it still was an important learning experience that lead to much better stuff and helped him practice developing his themes. Both writing wise and music wise.

We got Megalovania from that hack after all.

In many ways it was a sort of undertale test run if you want it.

It was certainly a test run for a lot of idea that would be in Undertale.

Especially calling the player a monster but at least Undertale had the decency to call you out for doing no mercy and not if you do Pacifist.

Heck, I think even making the hack is what gave Toby the drive and notoriety to start up Undertale in Kickstarter.

No, we knew "Radiation" from something much sillier: Arn's Winter Quest.

it opens with a "holiday gift man who lives on the moon" bit that we didn't learn til much later was a direct lift from a gag in The Simpsons

Honestly in the Halloween Hack, I found the Starmen using the diamond enemy overworld sprite movement to be unnerving. It is so simple but so creepy.

And of course, the Phase Distorter boss music is phenomenal. Toby really does amazing music.

…Also, Kingdom Hearts ain’t as confusing as you hear if you just pay attention.

So, I decided to brush up my old steam account and play some Deltarune (since I don’t have the money to play Undertale). And as much as I enjoy the story, I realize that I suck at bullet hells. I get my ass handed to me more than a few times (though I thankfully have yet to die) so I’m gonna be screwed when I decide to fight Jevil. But hopefully I’ll get used to it.

I think most Jrpgs are can be just as confusing and overly complicated btu for some reason kingdom hearts is the one that get's the most crap for it, maybe becouse of it's disney connection which attract more casual fans to it who're not used to the insanity that is jrpg storytelling.

Okay, no, I'm a JRPG enthusiast and Kingdom Hearts is a lot even by that standard. It's not as incomprehensible as people like to play it up as, but there's just so. Much. To process.

The real problem with KH is how decentralized a lot of the plot elements are. Individual JRP Gs can certainly be convoluted but it's largely contained to the one work and you just need to dig around enough to understand it.

not neccesarely, a retcon can cause continuity snarls but it doesn't always do.

You know what I find funny? The implication that Spamton just had 'Help someone go on killing spree through cyber world and use it to take over and become king' just in the back burner in case anyone asked for the ring.

Every good salesman always has a plan to murder their way to the top without directly doing it after all.
