I don't mind the amalgamate thing. She didn't know what was going to happen and those people were already dying, meaning it's not like she was murdering anyone. When she realized her mistake she did what she could for them. I don't really like that all the amalgamates' families are okay with it, though. Like, I don't think that can really be considered your mother anymore, Snowdrake. Her mind is almost gone and she barely seems to recognize you. Feels like Alphys got off light in that respect: Nobody blames her.

What I do mind is that she's dishonest, never apologizes to the protagonist for deceiving them and that her insecure nerd thing isn't endearing.

I don't think it's meant to be. Alphys isn't a great person.

I think it's meant to be endearing because otherwise she doesn't show any redeeming or likable character traits.

Is “great taste in girlfriends” a redeeming quality?

That is my interpretation of her at least. She's presented as the relatable, anime loving nerd girl with anxiety, and then she's also a liar and directly responsible for the plot occurring.

Her lying to Frisk I put about as much seriousness in as Papyrus poorly locking Frisk in the shed

To each their own of course but I also don’t hold any hard feelings against Muffet and she tried to feed Frisk to a giant cupcake spider for not participating in a bake sale and unsubstantiated rumors

Okay, but in Muffet's defense, what kind of monster wouldn't participate in the bake sale?!

They're selling delicious baked goods made by spiders, for spiders, of spiders! You'd have to be pure evil not to get in on that.

Pretty much every character in the story besides Papyrus and Toriel have wanted Frisk dead at some point.

Jason has come back to kill for Mommy.

Yeah Alphys messed up a bunch but I can understand her motivations for doing so and she clearly feels a lot of regret so I don't hold any hard feelings to her about it.

Also the Amalgamates reintegrating into society was one of my favorite things about that storyline. Most things would have presented a mercy kill as the "best" option.

The amalgamates don't bother me. She did the best she could and made the experiments as ethical as possible. Can't even really say she ruined their lives since they were already inches from death and were donated by their families. Hiding what she did from their families bothers me, as does lying to Undyne and the protagonist. She's fundamentally dishonest. Mettaton says something like "She lied to you and put you into danger that otherwise would never have existed to convince you she has virtues that she does not." She sort of addresses that but, well, she also never really pays for it. I don't really get the feeling that she's truly learned her lesson and won't do it again in the future.

She never apologized for lying to Frisk and putting them and potentially Mettaton as well in potential danger and making him complicit in her lies, though he's a dick anyway so I don't really care. She just comes across as really selfish. Her quirky personality doesn't really balance that out for me and, in fact, just makes her more annoying when otherwise I could have just accepted her as a flawed person who made mistakes.

Also I was deeply and truly hurt by Muffet's accusation that I hate spiders and torture them. I love spiders! They're even kind of cute!

I just don't get thinking she doesn't feel apologetic or hasn't learned her lesson. Every interaction with her after that radiates intense regret.

Arha Since: Jan, 2010
#17840: Mar 12th 2020 at 5:11:59 PM

Oh, she feels regret, but I'm not convinced that she won't do it again in the future. Next time she has something she really doesn't want to tell others I'd give great odds that the lesson will be lost on her and she'll hide it for as long as she thinks she can get away with it.

Also, feeling apologetic and actually apologizing are two different things entirely. One requires you to abandon your pride and put yourself at emotional risk, which is something Alphys typically doesn't do.

Spiders are nice. They don't bother anyone and catch more annoying bugs like flies or the moths who buzz around my phone when I am in bed at night. Though I'll admit that seeing one on me all of a sudden when I am in bed gets a kneejerk AHHHH reaction.

I don't think that at all. The whole Date/True Lab segment is about her learning to let the different sides of herself out to other people instead of hiding everything away.

And I don't think "yeah I did a bad" is meaningfully different enough from "sorry" to hold a grudge about it.

Well, that would require her to have any sort of pride or self respect whatsever.

which she dont, because she is trash.

That was more of a general case than talking about Alphys in particular. Alphys doesn't apologize most likely due to her cowardice, hence the 'put yourself at emotional risk' part. Because there's always the chance that someone won't accept your apology. Which I don't think applies here but that says something else bad about her. "Ah, Frisk isn't mentioning this, so I don't have to apologize for the wrongs I've done to them."

She let Frisk fulfill Frisk's recently lifelong dream of playing Undyne in a roleplay

It was a very specific item to cross off a bucket.

But this only forced Frisk to accept that they will never be as great as Undyne.

I mean, undyne manage to remake herself from death and use determination by the power of anime.

I always wonder how that happen.
