I think they just made the horror subtle. It's the sense that things are very, very wrong and that there's nothing you can really do about it. I kind of like that. I was expecting it'd be another "dark AU" where everyone was evil and blood-splattered. Instead, Toriel is just very, very unnerving to be around.

I'm not sure if just ends with the Toriel section or if the english version just hasn't been finished.

[up]Yeah the subtleness and buildup is what intrigued me about it. I also like how it builds off of canon. The comic also manages to do this well.

One thing I will say though if you haven't read the webcomic its about to go to hell really fast. Franbow/Alice in Madness kind of hell. After this point in the story the game leaves off on things get very fucked up very quickly. Although I am pretty sure most people whom played Undertale know that as monster food doesn't effect humans at all.

I am very curious how the game will be doing the next segments though.

There's nothing subtle about an intro with a character's face splashed in blood

Its not blood and gore horror despite the intro.

Horrortale is more Franbow/Alice in Madness kind of horror. Although once Sans and Papyrus arrives it'll get more bloody and gory.

Well there's more to it than the opening thumbnail.[nja]'d

[up] (3)

I thought that "monster food" thing was strange.

I saw a portion of the webcomic with Sans and Papyrus but I skimmed it. The comic was narrated and the transitioning between panels seemed awkward to me. I'll give it another look eventually.

I was more fond of Toriel's characterization than Sans or Papyrus, but I suppose there's probably more going on there than what I glimpsed.

[up] Their characterization is interesting in this AU. Sans and Papyrus are still very close to each other if you read the comic through. Flowey is not wrong though that Sans is pretty psychotic here, the crack in his skull that he got from an argument with Undyne seems to partly be as to why. The monsters in Grillbys also say that he has not ate anything in a long long time and refuses to eat humans, which also seems to be why he is more psychotic. The author also has said that he has amnesia and tends to blackout when he has psychotic breaks, usually when he tries to deliberately maim or kill Aliza.

Papyrus, atleast judging by the webcomic, is pretty much his canon self but much more conditioned to violence and deaths of the human children. This isn't actually his fault. When Sans initially said that any humans that come through Snowdin will be harvested for food instead of their SOU Ls (he said this to spite Undyne after the aforementioned situation where she and Alyphs cracked his head open) he refused. He told Sans that he wouldn't participate in this and that it wasn't like him to suggest something so horrid. Sans gives him monster food laced with human meat right after that since he and Papyrus are starving which he ate, not realizing what was in the food. This is what pushed him to start eating humans and to invent crooked spaghetti which he fed to other desperate starving monsters in Snowdin.

As far as we know Snowdin is the only monster town eating humans, its implied very heavily that monsters have been eating eachother in this AU too with a brief glimpse of a group Temmies turning on a lone weakened Temmie and Muffet's spiders trying to eat the Froggit you see in the game. Atleast one of the dog guards seem to of gone feral judging by how Flowey says to not run if something growls at you in the woods and how Sans immediately teleports away when he and Aliza hear growling in the woods.

So who else thinks/wants Noelle to be a party member in Deltarune's full release? She appeared in Toby's first concept art of the Fun Gang and the narrator refers to her in the same breadth as Kris and Susie if you name yourself after her, and since she's a Monster she could be the offensive spellcaster of the team's Fighter/Thief/Cleric dynamic it has.

[up][up] I want that badly enough (and do find it reasonably plausible) that I made some art to that end last year, though I went with making her a Bard for mostly pun-related reasons: http://fav.me/dcsm84h

Yeah she got more focus than any of the other classmates in Chapter 1 so I'm sure there's a big role in store for her.

(that said, imagine Jockington joining the party)

Honestly I don't even think Noelle being a party member is even a question.

The bigger one imo is if Susie, Kris, and Ralsei return.

This song needs more love.

Toby and Taro Yoko had a chat sometime ago that was posted on an issue of Famitsu.

Toby said he didn't really play many games these days, but he really wanted to play Automata and loved it. Yoko also really enjoyed Undertale but he claims to have played most of it inebriated.

So here's some theories I have/read about for Deltarune.

Ralsei's goat face isn't his true visage. Ralsei is a Darkner yet everyone we meet is based on some toy or playing card, and it's too suspicious that his name and appearance are so drastically similar to Kris' beloved brother. I remember reading something where Ralsei described himself as comprised of darkness itself, and his KO animation shows him collapsing into his robes, so it's possible that Ralsei is a shapeshifter of some kind. Alternatively, if the Darkners are embodiments of cast off and forgotten toys, then Ralsei is the horns Kris used to wear as a kid. Ralsei has pink horns while IIRC Kris' toy horns were red, whereas Asriel's horns are grey in his official art.

Noelle will join the party. She's been depicted as too nominally important for her not to have a bigger role, and the Fun Gang lacks an offensive spellcaster. Also I think what will happen is that her dad will pass away in the hospital while she's adventuring in the Dark World.

The Queen is Ralsei's mother. Ralsei's supposed to be a prince, after all, and the only other prince in the game (Lancer) is the one with the King as his dad.

The game will end with Asriel returning home for college and the Dreemurrs going out for dinner.

Like it's been said just a few posts ago, it's generally agreed on that Noelle's going to be a party member. I think the snake, cat, and bird will be party members as well due to having face portraits.

Replaying the demo right now and two things really stick out to me about Susie.

She first starts out treating Lancer like dirt the way she does everyone else, but the minute Lancer gives her some positive reinforcement she's all about the little guy.

When fighting K.Round when Ralsei tells her to stop attacking she responds with "what, and let it think I'm afraid?!" which probably has some major deeper meaning to her character and homelife.

Yeah. It's a little stereotypical, but I definitely got the Bender feel from her - even from her looks. Kris and their classmates are, what, thirteen? Suzie might be a little older, or she might just be bigger. Either way, I shudder to imagine what kind of home life Suzie might have.

It's been fun.

I think if Toby went even an inch further with Susie she'd have ended up an awful and false stereotype of the sad bully who just needs caring to get healed. Instead leaving things at threats means she never gets the opportunity to become despicable and it helps contextualize her character as someone who needs to appear powerful for her own safety.

I heard a theory somewhere that there are hints that Suzie may be starving. As in, her home life is so bad that she's actually malnourished. That may gave some context to her lashing out, though I don't remember how much evidence there actually is for this theory.

I remember reading something about how there's some kind of vitamin or something like that in chalk where Susie could get actually nourishment from it, and that her eating it wasn't just a gag.

AlleyOop Since: Oct, 2010

They're monsters, with varied diets such as snails. So it's entirely possible chalk is just a normal foodstuff to her.

[up] Later in the game she complains that the only thing she had to eat that day was chalk and if you eat the moss in tha dungeon cell she'll be annoyed you didn't save any for her, I think it's safe to say she's not getting enough to eat.

So do we know whether the game is getting released episodically or one full release? Because I just watched the credits roll and it said "to be continued in Chapter 2" which makes me think the former.
