Wait, what? Why? Why now?

I'm not sad Iger is stepping down since he was kind of creatively bankrupt (even Eisner thought so), but this is still really confusing.

I can't help but wonder why. He's not going out in shame like Eisner did, with everyone calling on him to resign, but this abruptly... well, he did want to quit anyway.

I mean, he was going to retire eventually, but he's out of being a CEO now?

Like, right now now?

...This came out of nowhere. Almost as sudden as Dan DiDio leaving DC a few days back.

Hopefully this won't mean bad things for Marvel Studios. And maybe they'll ease up on the live-action remakes?

Reminder that Iger is still there, still executive chairman until 2021, and will likely have a guiding hand in Disney for the next couple of years.

Also, in the PR PDF, Iger says he wants to step down at a high note. And this is a really high note to step down from with the acquisition of Fox and the successful launch of Disney+.

It is also very likely that Iger wanted to step down and for a while and was looking for someone to take his place.

Maybe he's planning to run as president in 2024.

Since Iger is still going to be Disney's Chairman, I'm pretty sure him stepping down isn't because he's got a scandal that's about to blow up. It could be some illness he's contracted, or something's happening to his family. It's also possible he's worried about the next Six Months (Coronavirus, a potential Sanders presidency, and the general economic shakiness the market is starting to feel). There's also the possibility he might run in 2024, as [up] said.

Here's hoping Chapek can run the ship as effectively as Iger has.

He's been talking about retiring as far back as early 2016, from what I remember.

The Disney Parks Community aren't happy on the news of Chapek becoming the new CEO.

With Iger gone, does that mean the live-action remakes might finally stop?

Because the whole “remake the entire Disney Animated Canon in live action/realistic CGI” thing seems to have been a pet project of Iger’s, just like the direct-to-video sequels were for Eisner.

Yep, but these actually made money. For all we know, it'll depend if Mulan makes money. At the very least, I think they'll finish the ones already on the works, if only for the sake of the people working on it.

[up]x4 Nope. It will get worse. Chapek is an advertising executive, not an entertainment one. If his work on the parks in any indication, he'll milk I Ps, screw workers, and anything fun or creative will happen despite him.

What’s left for them to buy? They can’t buy another big media corporation like Fox at this point, because doing that would give them a big enough share of the domestic film market to be declared a potential monopoly risk.

They already have a comic book company (Marvel), an internet content creator (Maker/ Blip) and a major sci-fi franchise that can target audiences their in-house works can’t (Star Wars).

So I don’t see Disney making another big purchase for quite some time. If they did, it would be in an area they currently don’t control directly.

I was actually thinking toys. Hasbro in particular has a lot of franchises that Disney might be interested in, to say nothing of the possibility of things like Transformers getting a movie reboot and My Little Pony on Disney Channel.

I think Disney is at the point where if they try to expand anymore, they'll be hit with Anti-Trust and Anti-Monopoly laws that will split the company in two. Especially if Politics in the USA go a certain way.

I think Disney will focus on shoring up what they got and improving on it, rather then expanding more.

[down] My guess would be a Disney, comprised of their direct studios and theme parks, Pixar, and maybe Blue Sky Studios; and a '20th Century' Studios, comprised of their Fox Assets, Marvel and the Muppets. Lucasfilm would probably be divided between the two, with Disney keeping the Technology parts and '20th Century' getting most, if not all, of the Film Rights.

I feel Marvel could stand well on it's own at this point. I don't know how much of a symbiotic nature it is, but considering how much they make with their films and merchandise, they'd probably be very successful if they split from Disney, at least for a little while.

What’s going to happen when they run out of IPs to remake?

Sequels to those IPs. They've announced a Jungle Book 2 and an Aladdin 2.

an internet content creator (Maker/ Blip)

Blip is gone and Maker has been all but absorbed into the Disney Digital Network, with nearly all of its partnerships cut.

Part of me wonders if this is a response to the Fox buyout not going as well as they wanted I mean for starters most of the left over fox film slate has flopped.
