. Disney still holds the trademark, so I don’t think it’s that big a deal for them honestly.
And the fact that they are actively using him helps them as well.
Looking in the comments of that article, I actually really like this suggestion for copyright reform.
This process solves so many problems. Right now it is ridiculously hard to tell if anything is under copyright or not. With a registration system that problem becomes easy. Is the work over 20 years old? Is it in the registration database? If it is over 20 years old and not in the database then it is in the public domain.
The system needs to change so that it doesn't capture everything, it needs to only capture valuable things. Owners will pay fees to protect their valuable things. That is a fair trade - owners pay fees past 20 years in exchange they get the services of law enforcement and judges to protect their works.

Nah. They'll find a way to change the laws again.
So my best guess is this is going to be a huge Lion King reference (or possibly Jungle Cruise, since the creative team likes their Disneyland references.)

It’s a little odd, reference wise. It’s definitely a big Lion King ref, but without anything specific.
For example Mickey and Minnie see a bunch of lions on a hill that looks like but isn’t actually Pride Rock. Or they joke around with a trio of hyenas, but they’re not Shenzi, Banzai and Ed.

"The difference between reality and fiction is that fiction has to make sense." - Tom Clancy, paraphrasing Mark Twain. They’ve had no problems using cameos of Classic Disney characters before, so that’s especially odd. It had to be intentional.

New short!
Submitted for your approval, a Mouse who never carries correct change...
Also, they totally missed an opportunity to call that The Toll-Tale Heart.
"The difference between reality and fiction is that fiction has to make sense." - Tom Clancy, paraphrasing Mark Twain.Or "The Toll Booth Chainsaw Massacre" but OTOH, that might be too gruesome a title
I can't get over the The Black Cauldron jab of an old VHS tape forgotten under the seat.
Well, it is an Old Shame.
Alfred Hitchcock as a pigeon cameo at 1:35.

I think that background music in the park might be from Vertigo, which would fit with the Hitchcock cameo.
The ending credits seem to be a homage to Saul Bass.

Optimism is a duty.New toon!
This would explain a lot if they left Goofy there.
YO. Rules of the Internet 45. Rule 45 is a lie. This is one of the most cursed shorts produced so far
Though reusing all the stock Goofy sounds for everything he influenced in the past is admittedly hilarious
How do you mean cursed?
Optimism is a duty.Man, I've seen strange installments of this series before but this one just takes the cake. Still funny though.
"I shall not be foolish again, my dear Gwendolyn!"It also explains all the classic shorts where everyone is Donald Butt. :P
I'm I crazy, or does the background at 3:16 look a lot like Tomorrowland? There's even a WED Way Peoplemover track, and Space Mountain.

Mickey's "landing" program looks an awful lot like a weapons lockon system.
Also, in a few shots Mickey's ears are OUTSIDE of his helmet. Sloppy.

Optimism is a duty.Well, of course. Where else would the TWA Moonliner land? The music while they were chasing Chip and Dale was the Dick Dale Space Mountain soundtrack, too.
(Though the Moonliner was removed ten years before Space Mountain opened.)(And it looked like he was landing at WDW in Florida, which never had a Moonliner.)
yeah, the uncovered Peoplemover tracks make it look more like Disneyland’s Tomorrowland, as well.

As for "Outta Time"... do we really want to think about how Goofy's DNA got to be the basis of all life on Earth?
Mickey Mouse will be in the public domain in 5 more years. Just his original incarnation, though. His iconic gloves will only become public a year after that, for instance.
Optimism is a duty.
