So, hey, I don't know if this has a thread yet. If it does, never mind, I suppose! So... er, yeah. This game? It's, uh, kind of my thing, as it were. (Kind of a bombshell to drop so early into my forum career around these parts, but hey.) Has anybody else played this?

Basically, you're some human guy, who goes out to this backwoods Japanese town, where a bunch of your old high school friends live. These friends include a dragon, a tanuki, a lion, a wolf, a bear, and a few others. Nobody in the game ever thinks to realize 'holy crap there's a talking dragon in our town', of course. It's one of those sorts of games. So, basically, it works like most other visual novels. Read dialogue, make the occasional choice, and if you do it right... well, things start happening, to put it in a work safe manner.

I've only played it once through so far, with Kounosuke. I assume I got the best ending, given the way things ended up, but I dunno. One look at him made me decide to gun straight for him all in one playthrough. Even after the bastard tanuki stole my character's wallet. Seriously, that is a total abuse of hotness privileges.

...Honestly, though, ever since I heard about how the creators are bunch of xenophobic jerkoffs, I'm not sure if I want to go through another route. Ah, well, always fanart, I guess.

EDIT: [down] Yeah, sorry, I was kind of in a hurry when I posted this, so I might as well say right now if you're not into gay anthropomorphic animals, you might want to move on. Eh, I can't deny it's definately not for everybody.

To clarify on the 'xenophobic' thing, apparently the creators of this game through a hissy fit that people are trying to translate the game, so they're apparently they're trying to make it as hard as possible to translate it. I'm not sure why, other than Japan being... Japan.

I'm not entirely sure why there would be a Fanwork Ban on translations. Perhaps one or more of the following factors apply:

  • Could be easily Overshadowed by Controversy, since it combines cartoon animals with Bara Genre.
  • Audience-Alienating Premise: There's a fanbase. However, I don't know how much overlap there is between bara fans, Furry Fandom, and h-game / visual novel fans.
  • Ownership concerns. From the main Morenatsu page: "No one person designed the game's characters, and no character was designed by just one person, but by the aggregation of many different people's ideas. Consequently, the Morenatsu project does not claim ownership over any of the characters, and in fact encourages their reuse in other people's works."

It might be easier for English speaking fans to create their own similar story or game, as a sort of mockbuster.

Compare and contrast this with Hatoful Boyfriend, which is another Widget Series visual novel with a small but dedicated fandom, and a human main character. HB is finished, features girl x boy relationships and relatively worksafe content, and it was translated with the author's consent.

I'm surprised that nobody's ever considered having a bunch of furries get together with Ren'py and make something like this in English. I'm not entirely sure how lomg it'd take, but there'd probably be a bigger market for it over here than in Japan, anyway.

Probably for the same reason that it's hard to get a bunch of like-minded people together to complete any sort of game. It's a lot of work, and the attempts at sustained collaboration usually fall through.

...eventually, we will reach a maximum entropy state where nobody has their own socks or underwear, or knows who to ask to get them back.
