ALL CREATURE WILL DIE AND ALL THE THINGS WILL BE BROKEN. THAT'S THE LAW OF SAMURAI.I haven't watched this film yet.
Seeing so much praise for it is setting off my Hype Aversion meters in a big big way.
I'm gonna watch this movie this weekend while making white russians.
I watched it months ago, I honestly think it's pretty overrated, especially compared to other works of the Coen Brothers, like Fargo or Burn After Reading. I don't dislike John Goodman or anything, but Walter's annoying as shit.

I could get someone seeing Fargo as a better movie, but you're gonna have to convince me on Burn After Reading.
I actually liked Fargo. And Miller's Crossing. And O Brother Where Art Thou. Which makes it really odd that I have never felt able to fall under the spell of the film of which this topic is based around.
I found Burn After Reading funny and engaging. The Big Lebowski I didn't. I couldn't tell you why exactly (except for the fact that Walter was just intolerable), but I didn't.
Same here. I've seen plenty of movies by the Coen Brothers (though not all of them), this one just did not click with me. Maybe it was the fact that I didn't notice any of their signature Black Comedy that I'm so fond of. There was comedy, but not in the vein of say, the hanging scene from True Grit.
Hell, maybe I just wasn't in the mood to watch it when I did. I dunno.

It's really a movie that you either 'get' or you don't.
Multiple viewings help a lot, really. I found that the movie was amusing the first time and hilarious the second. You start noticing little details and nuances in the dialogue.
You can get what you want and still not be very happy.
I think I'm going to watch it again tonight. Not certain if I'm going to make any caucasians, though.
Maybe it's just the people I hang around/work with, but it's damn near impossible to reference a line from the Big Lebowski without others immediately chiming in with more. So, I'll start this off with one: (NSFW, lots of language)
A reviewer on IM Db characterized this as a "warm movie full of humanity." I'm not certain I see it that way, although it has a quality of touching on most every facet of life in some way to me.
