[up][up] All the Ys games since released here have the normal attack button thing. The only exception is the rereleases of Ys I and II because they were designed with that system in mind.

[up] Ys Origin (and all of them really) play like very fast paced 2d Zelda games. There are a few puzzles, and the stories are actually pretty good. Ys Origin is (as the name indicates) a prequel to the rest of the series, and it sets up the situation encountered in I and II. Overall, Ys Origin is a very entertaining and fast-paced plot-driven dungeon crawler with awesome music.

Should I play Origin or Oath first?

Origin. In addition to taking place earlier, it's a bit trimmed down as far as the quest goes (pretty much one huge dungeon), while Oath is sometimes considered the pinnacle of the series. I haven't played Oath yet, but I've played 6 (imported it back in the day) and part of 7, and I can say that Origin feels like a streamlined, more action-oriented take on the series.

So playing Ys Origin as the "LOLNOMAGIC" Axe/Sword user. The major bosses are really fun, I can't help but feel that I was doing Arthropod wrong it managed to tangle itself up several times during the battle. The mid bosses are about as frustrating as expected for human sized boss battles in a 3d JRPG dungeon crawler (Can I win that Hopeless boss battle or no?) I like all of her skills equally as they all have their uses (A sign of a well balanced system), I do prefer the sword in most situations for its AOE attacking.

How many Ys games are on the PSP? I might need to pick them up... (as I said earlier, I only have the Turbo Grafx ones so far)

[up]x2 If you're talking about Kishigal, then no, the best you can do is get them down halfway, at which point the game pretty much proceeds as though you got your axe handed to you, though you do at least get an achievement out of it. And yeah, so far, I feel like the major bosses are Best Bosses Ever. The music helps.

EDIT: When I say "the major bosses", I mean "except for Khonsclard the Creeper." He can just fuck right off.

[up][up] There's Ys I&II (on the same UMD/download) the Oath in Felghana and Seven. Origin is only available on the PC and VI, the Ark of Napishtim is only available as a PSP umd and on the PS 2. I think the PS 2 version is superior, at least to the PSP version.

Ys VI is avaible on UMD, and to be frank, it kinda sucks... if you use it normally. If you are willing to dable a bit into homebrew you can rip the game to an ISO and force the CPU clock speed to 333 mhz. It becomes mostly smooth this way (while playing it without the forced cpu thing the frame rate is all over the place), except for a few places, though it doesn't look as good as the PS 2 or PC versions. Still, does the work for a portable Ys VI this way

EDIT: [down]My bad, it was Ys VI (Ark of Napishtim), not IV (Mask of the Sun/Dawn of Ys/Celceta) That'll teach me to use the phone to post answers here xD

[up] I think you mean VI. IV was never released in English, and it never got a release on the PSP.

I appear to be somewhat an expert on Ys. Hm.

I have the official localization of Oath, but I've been playing the fan translation so far.

Which one would y'all say is better?

If I remember right, Xseed actually licensed the fan translation.

The translation for Ys Felghana and Ys Origin comes from fan translations.

Anyway, time for a new trailer with gameplay from Ys Celceta!:

Just finished Ys Origins on the third character.

Holy shit I got chills when Genesis Beyond The Beginning starting playing before the final boss.

And I thought Yunica's section was awesome when Beyond the Beginning started playing in the final dungeon/section.

Mantid is kicking my Ass in Yunica's section and I have no clue what the hell I am supposed to do with the Hammer in Hugo's.

My current strategy for mantid is: Spam Charged Phoenix and dodge like hell.

Also: Does Hugo ever recover from being an absolute twat in this game? He is starting to grate on my nerves.

Oh yeah the Mantid kicked my ass as well. I found the earth move to deal a lot of damage but it's just far too risky so I did the same thing. Phoenix while running like hell. Level up once if it's still being a pain. I did hate how I had to kill the boss multiple times because it kept on healing itself.

Mantid wouldn't be so hard if it didn't have so much health...

Eventually, I found a sort of rhythm. Fire Phoenixes at him constantly, and whenever I have an opening (when he's charging his laser satellites or releasing his minions) spam fireballs.

I just beat Ys: the Oath in Felghana.

1. It is challenging. The dungeons, starting with the second, are no cakewalk at all. The bosses...well, there's a reason for the presence of the "Consult a FAQ Already" achievement (for losing to a boss ten times in a row). This was on the normal difficulty setting. That said, I dealt with this just by applying a reasonable degree of caution, prudence, and learning from my mistakes. The game felt difficult...but fair.

2. The game doesn't seem particularly innovative, and cliches and but it is extremely well-polished.

3. The music is awesome.

The two Ys games on Steam appear to have just been updated. 4.6 MB of Felghana and 2.7 MB of Origin worth of updates.

What exactly got updated? I don't know.

Picked up both Ys from Steam this time. Been playing Oath on "easy".

...I'm dieing to these darn rock/shell things in the mountain more than against the bossesnote . I understand that they are easy enough to dodge/damage once you know their pattern, but they take a lot of time to kill and deal more damage per hit than any other mob I have come across.

I guess I could just run by them, but I've been following the "kill everything I see" strategy (unless I've previously cleared an area more than once) up till now.

I played through Oath on hard.

That was a mistake.

I'm currently stuck just before the final boss because I'm not willing to put forth the effort to try and beat him.

I will one of these days.

The final boss's last phase tests your ability to stay calm in a circumstance of chaos.

^^ Have you tried upgrading your equipment or buying new equipment? What about leveling up a bit? That should make the game substantially easier; that's what happened to me when I faced the second boss.

And what do you mean by the rock/shell things?

I've got the lvl 1 4th sword, lvl 2 3rd armor/shield, and the first two bracelets with 2 gems appease. I do have the ore to upgrade the armor/shield, but that would only add 2 Def. Thinking about it now, that might be enough considering it is the number of hits I'm taking, and not the damage per hit, that is really killing me. I'm not particularly interested in grinding because I have not really needed to yet.

And I am talking about those rock things that pop out of the ground and shoot 3 "ice beams" in a cone towards you. There is an area the other direction from the gap you have to cross that has so many of them, that trying to kill them all is killing me... and then I end up starting back at the mid-point. I think that next time I will just continue on and see if there is another save-point soon after there.

Actually, 2 defense is a hell of a lot more than you may think. Small stat bonuses like that work wonders.

Be that as it may, I just tried continuing and ignoring that other area for the moment. Got the last bracelet and there was a save point right near by! The new bracelet makes those rock guys chumps (though I still have to deal with the flying eye) and me feel stupid for not trying that earlier.
